Outer Worlds - now that I am almost done with the main game, it’s finally starting to click.  The story is coming together finally.  It seems like some of the stakes should have been explained much earlier in the game.

I ha heard this game wasn’t meant to be as big as something like Fallout, but it does seem really abbreviated.  There’s only only a few combat areas, and the largest social area only gets opened up late in the game.  It feels like this is mostly a prologue for another story. The personalities of some of the characters introduced late in the game are also more interesting.

I’m hoping it gets fleshed out more in the sequel.  There are a couple of locked planets that I heard never get unlocked.  Maybe more content was planned and never used?  Not sure how many of those get u locked with the dlc.

I tried playing Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP ten years ago on IOS and it was boring and I didn't get too far.

Was reading an article about Capybara games and this, Below, Grindstone and the author said they tried Superbrothers at release and bounced but came back ten years later on the Switch port and dug it. So against my better judgment I double dipped on Switch and beat it over the last few days.

This game sucks. Great pixel art, great music. Complete shit gameplay and pretty shit writing. 4-5 hours of backtracking, slow walking and puzzles which are just randomly clicking a bunch of objects in a random order until you figure out from trial & error the correct order. There are like 3 good Simon Says boss fights, but otherwise if they cut all the backtracking filler this would be a 90 min free Itch.io game (and would be fine as that).

Don't get how this was popular as a commercial software product.

Doesn't really make me want to play Below though the author in the article I read made Below sound pretty cool and immersive. Maybe if it was free in a bundle or Game Pass or PS+

But hey, Grindstone is a pretty great puzzle game.

Oh yeah, I forgot to talk about the mission that pissed me off the most in Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

There's this mission where you have to find some npc's husband in a hospital. I arrive at the hospital and I see the place has a floorplan. I'm excited because the game might actually have me use the audio/textlogs to figure out where the husband is located. Finally get me to figure out something for myself. After finding some intel the game tells me to go up to the floorplan and figure out where the husband is at. I get to the floorplan and it says "press square" and it puts a mission marker on the screen exactly where the husband is located.

I felt like throwing the controller through the tv. So fucking close to an actually well-designed mission...

Been focusing on Ramadan and other stuff but beat Resident Evil VII and the final boss was really bad but the twists are :delicious

Really great game and makes a nice case for itself in an already legendary franchise. Up there with RE1, 2, and REmake. Amazing how this franchise continuously reimagines and revamps itself for the better. Great stuff.  Now for the DLC.

I blame that game for the annoying 2010s trend of retro indie art where all the characters have long but 1 pixel wide arms.

I've never played the game, but I think the reason why it was so successful was that it was one of the first major mobile releases and it had a distinct 'artsy' and casual-gameplay style that the game journos of the time just ate up.

My plays:
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line - making my way through the songs one by one, now in the midst of FF6. Playing on Expert difficulty and doing pretty well (at least an S for every song so far). Trying to do some of the quests but a few seem almost impossible, even with a lv 99 party.

Azure - slowly moving along with it, up to Ch 3 day 3 at the moment. Game seems to be much more connected to the rest of the series than Zero was, and foreshadows a lot of places that would eventually show up in CS. I don't like the music as much as Zero, especially the new Geofront music.

The quests range from ez pz ("use this character") to like 75% total bullshit need endgame all lvl.99 party with perfect skills. I'm not bothering trying to clear them all, but I've cleared a few just for the growth eggs they give.

I've been playing nightly since launch, about 50 hours now. Just got my last character to lvl.99 yesterday. I've cleared all the songs on the expert and I'm working through them on ultimate and I'm about 50% through. I've definitely felt my skills improve because I used to think ultimate was too hard in these games but now I get perfect chains on 10 difficulty ones sometimes.

That being said, going through ultimate has shown me the difficulty numbers are fucking nonsense. I find some of the 9s and 10s really easy and get pretty close to perfect and then I will barely pass or fail an 8 difficulty song. The difficulty rating is super whack. It doesn't seem tied to BPM at all and I'm sorry but those high bpm songs are just too fucking fast for my fingers to move and I find them really tough.

Luckily if you fail a song you don't lose the items (growth egg) that you use on them, so no detriment for just trying every song and seeing how you do.

Probably not going to bother with supreme, but will at least attempt to clear all 500 songs on ultimate before putting it down.

Still, at this point game is great. Is it the perfect FF music game? Nah, but it's pretty great if you're an FF fan.

Fire Emblem Engage
Some of my units are quite powerful now with advanced classes. Overall this game just continues to impress. The difficulty is a bit weird though, most story missions (even on hard) are fairly straightforward but the skirmishes can be very tough and it's almost impossible to level weaker units that way.

The game seems designed to just give you new 'tier' units in each continent. You get a new high level magic user, cavalry or armored unit to replace the weaker unit or you need to invest some serious time into a single unit to make it strong.
It's difficult to keep the entire party up to a level where they are useful and don't go down in a single hit. The game is also quite stingy with item drops, making it difficult to farm gold the old fashioned way.

Red Dead Redemption - finally got the urge to play this again. I played it for a bit when it came out years ago and then dropped it. It still looks pretty good on the Series X, and there's quick resume.

RE2 remake - I ended up playing for a couple of hours on an older save before realizing I goofed up and starting over.  I was wasting all of my ammo treating this game like RE4 and trying to kill every zombie instead of just knocking them down or running by them. I had also missed or destroyed a few key items on my original run.  I'll probably finish a Claire run, then Leon run before getting back to RE4.

I kind of want an updated RE1 that plays similar to RE2 remake.

Fire Emblem Engage
Some great fights against the Emblems, namely Lyn and Ike. Especially the fight with Ike was crazy with new enemies spawning nearly every round, we had to fight an impressive rear guard and move around the entire map to avoid getting encircled. Eventually he trapped us in the corner but we managed to win the archer and magic battles while blocking him so eventually he ran out of ranged support units quicker than they spawned.

I might end up getting the DLC for this. Also Ivy slaps with the Lindwurm class. Overall the special advanced classes are very good in this game.

Playing this on the side still. Found all the Heart Piec...  Squids and Metroi.... Cacklebats. Time to tackle the final island. Fun game, lots of charm and not too difficult or easy. I'll probably pick up 1/2 Genie Hero and Seven Sirens on Switch or Steam at some point.

I finished up the first playthrough as Claire in RE2 tonight. The creepiest part was probably trying to escape the orphanage. There's a bit I don't remember from the original game, including Mr X. I had to look it up to see if he was really in there originally.  I'm going to do the Leon B run next.

I might RE3 remake next. Is it worth playing with everything cut out?  I never played the original so there will be nothing for me to compare it to.

It's a lot of fun.

Just really, really short. But that also makes it more replayable imo. It's almost short enough to be an expansion pack game, which is what the remake original was going to be...DLC for RE2r.

Definitely worse than the original RE3 because of how much is missing, but also plays a lot better with the new gameplay and looks great. It's definitely worth a play if you like RE2 Remake.

Awesome, I might play it next after the Leon run, then. I am digging the updated controls and camera view. I tried to play REmake and it was a bit clunky. The newer controls on the Xbox version didn't seem to help without the camera view change.  I've gotten lazy and spoiled by control setups since then. I doubt I could get through these with the tank controls nowadays.

I REALLY WANT CODE VERONICA

Everyone seems to hate that one, but I have a lot of teenage nostalgia of it since Dreamcast came out in my teens and it was like OMG RE WITH AMAZING GRAPHICS AND MATRIX GUN-FU OMGGG and it was super lengthy and Claire was cool. But yeah I'd much rather they remake RE1/CV:X/RE0 over remaking RE5 which doesn't need a remake and I hear RE6 remake would be great but only if they remake it by cutting half the game out and I doubt they have the balls to self-admit that RE6 sucks by cutting half of it out on a remake, so there's probably no point in remaking RE6.

I also think a remake of Outbreak 1/2 would be fucking awesome.

The rumor is:
Seperate Ways DLC (this year)
Resident Evil 9 (ties into Death Island)
Revelations 3 (although this might just be 9)

For the remakes a Code Veronica asset flip makes most sense but RE5 could work too. They basically already implemented the AI co-op with Luis, so I don't see the technical challenges that folks keep talking about.

My brother loved Code Veronica. I never played it but did buy it for the Xbox when it came out.  I was wondering why that one didn't seem to get as much attention. I do remember him wanting me to show off some of the cutscenes.

6 seems too new.  I did end up liking it more than I was expecting, but it could be pretty tedious in places. Cutting down some of the length of each campaign would be nice. I did like that each campaign played a bit differently.

From what I recall Leon had the best campaign. When I played it on PC it kept crashing on the mission with Chris in a jet. I remember buying it on Xbox or Switch during a sale so I need to get back to it at some point.

I ended up liking the Jake and Sherry campaign the best in some ways. It was a bit different. Leon's was more like RE4, and Chris's felt more like a bro-y shooter like CoD.  I never finished Ada's campaign. Maybe I should reinstall it at some point. It definitely felt like an action movie compared to the other RE games, though. The ridiculousness was one of the big draws for me. It might be fun to have another ridiculous game like that again.

Code Veronica is trash for 14-year-olds. Too long and too stupid.

RE6 is kino for real gamers that can understand a robust and complex 3rd person shooting/close quarters combat system. It's best enjoyed in coop, so if you don't like it, you probably also don't have friends to play it with you. And that reflects very poorly on you, very poorly.  :trumps

Also too long and too stupid, but it's good, unlike CV.

Note to Hamarr that RE2 remake is fantastic first run but worse the second (B run). It reuses entire puzzles and unlike the original you pretty much go through the same sections as A. It's just a retread of the first one. It's really bad. Mr X follows you in B too and his power is entirely lost because by now you've mastered evading him.

Code Veronica was released on PS2 in the form of Code Veronica X. CV sucks. Overly long distances between typewriters (iirc the distance between the first and second typewriter is like 40 minutes), awful enemies like Bamdersnatches, bad characters like Steve Burnside, too long.

Besides running through NG+ in RE4 Remake, playing

Spiritfarer

This game is great, but also sorta boring. Most torn I've been on a game in a while. There's so much good about it and the animation is incredible, even the movement controls are really fluid, but there is a lot of boring material grind in there. It's Assassin's Creed Black Flag x Animal Crossing x even more of a grind than AC. I wish it was more fun to play but I like it enough to keep playing. It's also fucking long, so it's going to take me a while.

Paranormasight

This game's awesome. Easy recommend. One of the most fun VNs in a while. Really fast-paced and exciting story and good characters. Good Square Enix game. More people should play it.

Utawarerumono Mask of Deception

 :uguu

But it's actually a pretty good VN/srpg so far. Good writing and characters. Good art. Very slice of life like the prequel was, but cast feels smaller and better developed in this one so far.

Yeah, I love REmake but I'd love to get RE1 with over the shoulder camera/combat.

Code Veronica didn't get the attention it deserved because Neogoof/Reeeeesetera are PlayStation shill hellholes and it gets buried because it was on Dreamcast.

It's the second best RE after RE2.

:whatisthis :whatisthis :whatisthis

A flawed iterative sequel from 1999, with many multiplat ports, never gained fandom because people were too mean to your favorite toy on a niche internet forum that was semi-popular during the PS360 generation? (btw, the same place that had a mod called codeveronicaxfreak and celebrated most other non-Playstation games from the same series).

Fire Emblem Engage
I've handed Prince Diamant the Ike ring and he's a legit tank now. Game is still very challenging though, especially because it's hard to make weaker units catch up with Alear, Diamant and a few other strong units. The best method I've found so far to level Lapis for example is to give her the Lucina ring so she can spam the Bonded Shield for some XP points while everyone else takes out the archers and mages that could possibly hit her. Another thing that helps is to upgrade the bond level with Corrin to lvl 5 so you can equip the HP+7 skill for a quick HP boost. The skirmishes seem to scale with your army rather than the chapter. The current recommended level is advanced class 10 but while Alear and Diamant are advanced class 20 (and Alfred too but he still sucks) Lapis and Anna are base level 7.

Age of Darkness: Final Stand is everything I enjoyed about They Are Billions without the brutal difficulty (at least starting out). One of the few early access games I'd easily recommend.

I don't know anything at all about the persona series but I have played a number of shin megami tensei games

I'm gonna see if I can play persona 4 golden and then persona 5 royal on steam deck without losing interest

Play persona 5, persona 4 is outdated and boring, and the characters are dull

update on this:

I eventually beat persona 4 and have gotten a ways into persona 5

both games good

Ryuji: huge letdown after Yosuke. I liked Yosuke because he had some responsibility built into him with the store manager's son thing, he wasn't just a one note dumb best friend. Ryuji is dumb best friend. he's bog standard idiot with some Chie mixed in

Ann: no character whatsoever. doesn't even have a core trope like the girls from P4 did. I don't know what they thought they were doing with this character, if she just doesn't land or what. super generic

Morgana: awesome, really well written and acted mascot character. Teddy was abysmal and I hated every moment with him by comparison, they turned it around like crazy

Yusuke: interesting, they play up the comedy with him being kind of a space cadet but he's also a little more than that, he's tolerable.

Makoto: awesome arc that puts the others to shame, good character

regarding Code Veronica talk above:

the retelling of Code Veronica in Darkside Chronicles is actually really cool even though obviously it's far from the gameplay you'd want

but the new prerendered cutscenes are awesome

Fire Emblem Engage
First beat Emblem Eirika's challenge. Fun map overall but took a few tries to kill the thieves on time before they could carry out the items. Next up was Chapter 17 and this was probably the best fight of the game so far and this game has many great fights.
6 enemy commanders all equipped with Emblem rings and bombastic epic music. Top Tier Fire Emblem.

Always looked like another boring open world collectathon to me. Harry Potter still got selling power I guess. Does it do anything interesting with the school setting or is it just, "go to class to power up your spells"?

you gain all the spells pretty early on. most of them are just "hey do these 2 random tasks then you earn your spell! wow!"

but majority of the game is filling out a "collection" for 100% completion. lots of useless ubisoft crap filler.

the rpg aspects are extremely nonexistent. find random clothing, equip when green number goes up.

Warioware 3DS. This is quite good, too bad it was sent to die. In EU we never got Twisted, so it's also nice to finally get those minigames in this package. Overall it brings together the best aspects of all prior Warioware games and cutting all the bad stuff. Even the only interesting thing from that stupid WiiU spinoff can be unlocked. The first WW game might still be the tightest, but I guess this comes second. This makes the awful Switch iteration even more shameful - I wouldn't be surprised if Wario as its own IP is dead now.

I enjoyed Hogwarts. Hogwarts itself and Hogsmeade are among my favourite open worlds to explore, but the rest of the world is basically filler, with very little variety in side missions.

It’s clear they had to make you a student because going to Hogwarts is basically the game’s biggest selling point, but struggled to fit that into their ambitions for the story, where you’re doing the job of an Auror and no one thinks that’s strange.

The best parts are the PS5-exclusive quest (which is going to ruin some kids who play this  :lol) and the three quest lines with your school friends. The main story is very much B-tier in comparison.

Well it was actually us that killed the 3DS because just like with the GBA > DS, Nintendo never intended the Switch to replace the 3DS and wanted to support the 3DS much longer (at least until they could bring down the price of the Switch).
It died quickly because we all just dropped the 3DS as soon as the Switch was on the scene. Nintendo then decided to move games intended for the 3DS like Link's Awakening and Metroid Dread to the Switch instead.

I think that if they had known the 3DS would fade so quickly, they would've released WarioWare Gold on the Switch too.

Nah. 3DS was already dead since 2015 or so. They just desperately tried to milk its dead userbase with cheap productions and gimmicks like faceplates in the end, because they didn't know whether Switch would be a hit and that's all they had left. In reality, 3DS never truly recovered from its failed launch. Fanboys convinced themselves with Reggie "what's wrong with you" memes, which actually just showed that it never caught on internationally. In the end it barely caught up with GBA and PSP lifetime sales, except it took twice as long. And the attach rates were subpar. I think before the big revision, there was an entire year when 3DS didn't have a single big hitter released. But when it was clear that WiiU was even more fucked, they backpaddled and tried to bet everything on their Japanese 3DS userbase with remake and remaster projects. And excluding Pokemon, they were all flops, including the worst selling Mario game of all time (Bowsers Inside story remaster).

The 3DS launch was a mess but the system did well later on, especially once the "New" models were out there. I do agree that many people ignored it (including myself) and focused on the Wii U instead but the real action was on the 3DS.
Folks just didn't see it that way at the time though, Japanese gaming was in a poor position overall and many great 3DS games didn't get the recognition they deserved until much later. A Link Between Worlds is now considered one of the best 2D Zelda's but when it released most people were dissapointed that it wasn't Ocarina of Time 2 instead.

Following the DS Nintendo did lose a lot of customers to smartphones and tablets overall. That was really the time when folks figured handheld gaming would be dead after the 3DS and why Nintendo seemed insane to launch a tablet with detachable controllers that could only play games (Switch). They did manage to lay the ground work for all the great third party RPG's on Switch and turning Fire Emblem into a flagship franchise.

You can tell that Nintendo is a much different company today than in those days though.

Up to chapter 15 in Resident Evil 4 Remake.  Man, that 1st part of the 2nd Krauser fight was absolutely spectacular.   :delicious
2nd part... Not so much.  Felt like humdrum Nemesis blah crap.  :-\
Slow going for me, but should have it finished next weekend.  Right on time for dem Tearzzz.
