Aria is one of the ones I've never played. I should do that next, since Castlevania HD got me in a metroidvania mood. Which is why I'm playing Portrait of Ruin at the moment! I haven't played it since it came out, and my save file was only four hours in so I figured I'd start over. Going to give the game another shot since I'm boosting multiplayer achievements in Smackdown 2007 right now and got nothing better to do.

I've been playing a lot of PS3 this weekend. Plowing through God of War 3 and Uncharted 2. Holy fuck those games look GREAT.

Welcome to real next gen console gaming. :smug

:rofl

Yeah, Slime! Enjoy both those games! Try not to run through them too fast, or you'll run out of exclusives.

I'm trying to make them last for that very same reason! :lol

Still playing Puzzle Quest 2; game is still awesome, but damn the loot sucks. Considering how hard it is to get loot, every chest should give me something balls out awesome, but instead I'll get like a plain dagger or some crap. So far I've just been upgrading the stuff I got at the very first of the game, because I haven't found anything better.

About to start my Plasma Cutter-only/Impossible difficulty playthrough of Dead Space. Loved the game the first time I went through it, so hopefully it'll be even more fun this time.

Going to play more Portrait of Ruin later tonight as well while I'm boosting in Dead or Alive 4. SS rank has such insanely high requirements, what a pain in the ass. Game still sucks from what I've played though. A bunch of mini metroid maps that are no fun to explore, I hate having two characters to swap back and forth, the bosses have sucked, and it's super easy so far. All I do is run up to an enemy, hit R for Charlotte's fire magic, hit them once or twice with John, and then they're dead. Meh.

Thinking I'll do a Sonic marathon pretty soon too. I've got Sonic 1-3 and Knuckles on XBLA, but I haven't completed any of them. So I figured I'll take a few days and play through them all back to back. Should be fun.

I've been more than halfway through PoR for like a year and a half now. I like having two characters, but I can't stand the maps in that game. I refuse to start OoE until I beat it.

PoR is the only Metroidvania I've liked of the DS ones.  It actually felt different and more like a straight up action game than a super metroid clone.

I thought OoE was a lot closer to a traditional action game than anything else Iga has done. DoS was the standard metroidvania, but I still loved both games. Can't say I like a single thing about PoR so far. I also hate doing quests for this stupid ghost in PoR  in order to get new abilities too, forgot to mention that.

Started, and beat Phantasy Star Adventure for Game Gear (translation patch of course)... graphic adventure in the style of Portopia. it was pretty shallow and took me probably less than an hour total. Going to try PS Gaiden next, hopefully it's a bit more substantial.

Yeah um, bringing that character back from the dead was pretty inexplicable.

BTW I'm totally amazed by how technically adept this game is. The character models/cutscenes look a treat, and the environments are awesome with dozens of pedestrians tooling around with nice seamless streaming and butter-smooth transitions into fight scenes. I'm kind of shocked that Sega pulled it off, I didn't know they had the staff to execute so well these days.

Finished Wolfenstein 2009.  I thought it was a pretty fun game.  Your weapons and powers in the game make you super powerful and it's fun to just blew through enemies.  The best is that you get upgrades that make defensive powers attacks.  The shield changes so anything that touches it dies and the bullet time one turns everyone near you into dust.  Between stuff like that and the power weapons, you really just destroy everyone.

Also playing Medal of Honor Infiltrator for the GBA again.  The game is great and I'm surprised that after 7 years there hasn't been a sequel.  It would be a great XBLA/PSN game if they gave it twin stick controls.

If you want to get past the quest glitches in the game you have to clear it with a command in the console hit the tilde key, that way you don't have to revert to another save and lose ridiculous amount of playtime. With or without unofficial patches this is a Bethesda game so shit happens.

Find the part of the quest you are on and type in assuming this is the quest the glitch happened in...

setstage MG07Leyawiin stage

substitute "stage" with the part of the quest you are on.

Leyawiin Recommendation (MG07Leyawiin)
Stage   Finishes Quest   Journal Entry
10      I need to find an amulet so that Dagail will send a recommendation to the Arcane University for me. Agata may know more.
20      I need to speak with the mages in the Leyawiin guild hall, in case any of them have seen Dagail's amulet.
30      Kalthar seemed to know a great deal about the missing amulet. I should tell Agata what he has told me.
35      Agata has asked that I attempt to question Dagail about her father, to find out what his connection to the amulet may be.
40      I need to find the fort at which Dagail's father was stationed. It should be somewhere near Leyawiin
50      I've arrived at Fort Blueblood. Dagail's father should be buried inside.
60      I have found the amulet Dagail needed. I should return it to her immediately.
70      I've defeated Kalthar, who was attempting to manipulate Dagail. I need to give her this information immediately.
100      I have delivered the amulet to Dagail.

If that isn't the quest it is glitching on look here.

Siegfried is my best at the moment. My old favorite character, Talim, doesn't feel the same at all. I can't do shit with her. :'(

Beat Rudra's Treasure FINALLY, started playing Phantasy Star Gaiden (+ patch). It's technically not that great a game (though the portrait art is nice for Game Gear), but I'm having a reasonable amount of fun. Time will tell if the excessive encounter rate will get to me, but hopefully the game is short like PS Adventure was.

This weekend it's Polish weekend - going to the Polish fair on Sat, and then playing Witcher on Sun.

zelda games have enough different (sub-systems, story, characters, dungeons) that this point is moot. Every Yak game is the same shit though aside from Kenzan, which we haven't gotten. They take place in the same city, involve the same characters, there's really nothing new I can gain from playing Yak 3 as opposed to just replaying Yak 1 or 2.

A guy on my friends list wanted to do some multiplayer achievements in a few games, so I just spent a few hours doing that.

First up was Space Invaders Extreme, which I think is a very overrated game. People were hyping it up when the DS/PSP version came out, but it's really nothing special at all. Plus the online multiplayer kinda sucks. Just gotta beat the game in co-op now in order to 200 it, then I'll probably never touch it again.

Played some Ace Combat 6 afterward. The two co-op missions are actually pretty fun. The first one we completed with only 9 seconds left on the clock, so that was kinda awesome. That was my fault though since I completely forgot that the back button switches to my air-to-air missles that would have completely annihilated the ace planes we were fighting. The second mission was pretty easy after I figured that out... :lol

Then we did the Pocketbike Racer and Duke Nukem 3D multiplayer achievements. Honestly, I think Pocketbike is a pretty decent game. Much more fun than the indescribably awful Sneak King at least. Boosting Duke was boring, but at least it didn't take long. And on a side note, Duke was actually my 100th game completed, according to my dashboard anyway. It would be nice if they didn't take DLC that you don't own into account when tallying that number, but whateva.

I also played some more Portrait of Ruin last night before I went to bed. I think I figured out why I really hated the game the last time I played it. The second portrait you go into is this horrible, HORRIBLE world where enemies are walking on the walls and ceilings. That's not what's bad though, it's the fact that they literally copy paste the entire god damn stage like 4 times and it's soooo tedious to run through. The music is this stupid circus/clown theme that has absolutely no place in a Castlevania game, and the boss at the end is terrrrrrrible. So here's hoping that it gets better from there, because at least controlling two guys at once is starting to grow on me a little. But I think my sister lost my DS charger, so I don't know how much further I can play for now. :-\

Just look at this terrible map:

FINALLY getting around to playing Bayonetta now that it's only $20 at Best Buy.

I'd be having a lot more fun with it if I had a decent grasp of what the hell I'm doing most of the time.  Right now I'm just playing the first few levels again and again in an attempt to figure it out.  Bayonetta's regular movelist is so insanely enormous and flexible right from the very start that there's a strong tendency (for me, anyway) to mash random attacks whenever things get hectic.  And then in the middle of everything else there are all sorts of special attacks using the witch meter (I don't know what the fuck is going on with that yet either --I've barely glanced at the HUD) and torture attacks that bring up prompts to mash buttons.

The game has been very easy thus far, but I feel like if I don't figure out how to play the game before I go any further that I'm just gonna get overwhelmed and lose interest.

edit: Is there a way to change the controls in this game?  The options have a "VIEW CONTROLS" option, but it doesn't seem to let you change anything.  I don't like the dodge button being on a shitty trigger --wanna move it to left bumper.  :(

I can kind of see why magus dropped devil survivor at day 6.  The game starts to fall apart in the end.  Day 1-5 is meeting people and talking to them, getting info, hitting on girls, learning about their backstories, learning about possible solutions to getting out of tokyo.  But in the end every character becomes distinguished mentally-challenged black/white YOU WITH ME OR YOU MY ENEMY and all the routes are pretty unlikable.  Plus with all the branching in the game sometimes things don't connect when they should.  Like someone will say something you've heard from someone else but you don't recognize it.  Or someone will be your friend and you don't have an option to help them out.  The game does a lot of stuff right, but the end is less than motivating.

Cool, thanks. I might have to drop Hilde. Charging attacks makes her really confusing to use. It's like trying to hold Juri's projectiles while still fighting in SSF4.

Do you know of any sites for VF5 or DOA4? I own both, but I was never able to get decent in either.

DoA4 I played a lot at first too, but I never got too serious with it. Still play it occasionally though. I'm terrible at SC4 though, never played more than 20 hours I'd imagine.

I think going forward my fighters of choice for this gen will be: SSF4 > BBCS > VF5FS > MvC3 > KoFXIII > TK6

Hopefully SFxTK is as awesome as it looked.

Thanks again. VF is so confusing for a 3 button game. KOF13 has a chance of being my 2nd fav if they don't fuck it up. I love BB, but fighting characters with never ending combo strings gets really annoying.

I have no faith in the new VF5 coming to consoles.

MvC3 will be fun, but I think I'm gonna have the same problem with it that I do with BB.

Tekken sucks.

Co-signed. Even working for Namco didn't ameliorate my disdain for that game.

Booted up tried to play Fable 2 but I quickly got reminded why this series is so mediocre and stopped. It's almost impossible to pick up a game if you stopped playing. You can't remember or find out what you own. What side quests you have done. What books you have bought or haven't bought. The map sucks, etc, etc. Just can't stomach all that to finish it.

Grid got way too frustrating.  Why do all these racing games have absolute bullshit AI that drives like a maniac and tries to kill you at every moment.  So many fun racing games are ruined in SP by the AI.
Also the career is such a grind.  It's even worse than Dirt 2.  3 tracks that are 6 laps each for a single event?  Drift challenge event requires 4 full runs?  Same with Touge.  Becomes a grind and an absolute chore.  Hopefully Grid 2 improves on these things a lot because I like the idea of a replacement for PGR but Grid1 is nowhere near it.  Even the drift detection feels off compared to PGR kudos drifting combo-ing.

Gonna start on Forza 3 now and have fun driving instead of raging from stupid AI.

Installing to a memory stick takes a long time due to the slower write speed. It's much slower than installing to a hard drive.

Tekken 6 is really a great fighting game. I never quite understand the hate that it gets. The art and characters can be pretty tacky and the single player stuff is terrrrrrible, but as a competitive fighting game it's rock solid. Deep gameplay, tons of characters with unique playstyles, very well balanced, great customization. I'm not sure what else they can do to please people.

This is one thing ASW fixed a lot in BBCS I think. You can burst twice per match now, and you no longer take extra damage after bursting. So if you're about to eat a huge combo, bursting out of it might not be a bad idea any more. Still, the game is extremely offense based, and if you're getting rushed down it can be hard to break through the pressure. But that fast pace is part of the appeal of this game, I guess.

I just badmouthed Tekken 6 in the "online deals" thread, but I realized my hatred for the title is based on Tekken 2 and 3, after which I gave up on it. Is 6 pretty different? As in "not fundamentally based on who can get their memorized ten-hit combo off faster"?

Tekken 5 was the first Tekken I spent more than a couple hours with, so I can't really compare it to the older games. I don't think the pacing or fundamentals has changed too much between each major version, but I can't say for sure. I'm no Tekken expert. But still, the game is generally about spacing and creating opportunities to land a quick combo. The big moves that launch you into the air aren't very safe, so if you use them recklessly you're going to get punished. It's generally the same back and forth, risk/reward system you see in most fighting games. I dunno, it's hard to summarize.

Just watch a match from this video, I don't think there's anything in there that looks bad at all.

The way I see it, Tekken has gone through 3 versions.

Tekken 1-3, Tag all play pretty similar, with each one improving over the last
Tekken 4 plays uniquely.  Has a Virtua Fighter style 3d feel.  Lots of good ideas, although not all of them worked.  Like VF3 it's the black sheep of the franchise.
Tekken 5-6 play similar in a new way that is more like 1-3 but with some of the ideas from 4 and some new stuff.  Combat feels more balanced.  Less about back forth juggles.

If I had friends who were into Tekken I'd probably like it almost as much as VF and really explore the depth of it.  But since they don't, I only play Tekken at a basic level and it's fun for a few weeks each time but then it gets boring and I drop it.

Yeah, my goal is to finish Devil Survivor before ACE shows up.  I think I'm at the last 1-2 maps.

I was just playing Soul Calibur 4 with my cousin and the fucker wouldn't stop grabbing. 4-5 ATTEMPTS EVERY FUCKING ROUND. I seriously contemplated breaking my arcade stick over his head.

If I had seriously got into fighting games when I was a little kid, I would've got into a lot of fights over cheap shit like that. I'm still pissed off right now. He took all the fun out of the game.
