I'm with Bebpo on the open world game thing. Sometimes it feels like just traveling around is a pain and sometimes you want to just point yourself in a direction and get there. In infamous and crackdown you can scale buildings in seconds and get where you need to go. I'm sure if someone added up all the time you spend just getting to the action in sandbox games, it would be a ridiculously huge number. For those types of games, I like what Mafia did by having a linear game set in an open world. I guess The Getaway did that too, but fuck The Getaway.
Still, I think there needs to be some balance. Prototype is the best example of how to fail. The game makes you so powerful that you feel out of control and it's made worse when missions are all the way across the map. That's the worst part when you have to drive across the map to do something. Fuck prototype.
Honestly I feel that way about most loot games. Playing them by yourself is mostly boring and that includes even some of the very good ones like Titan Quest.
I think Borderlands suffers a lot more than any other loot game because the skills and inventory are so basic. Basic isn't even the word I'm looking for. Even saying a skill set exists feels like giving it too much credit. With other loot games at least you have times when you feel like you're working towards something even while you're going through the game. Recently in Torchlight, I had some weapons I would keep in my inventory knowing that after leveling up x amount I would finally be able to use it. Borderlands didn't really have that feeling, for me at least.
and stalker pripyat continues to be great. There was one situation in the second are that seems like it would be one of those good/evil choices in games with a morality system. I play as a good guy naturally and I still tried to be diplomatic, but the game fucks you over big time for thinking survival isn't the main concern. Guy was trying to get about 15k from me, so I took out my shotgun and killed him and everyone in the bandit camp. Hell, I even went back to the bandit leader and took back the artifact I gave him for the ransom. That prick.
