Beat the original left 4 dead. It's okay and I see why other people would be really into it especially as a co-op experience and when you up the difficulty and I enjoy it myself but as I kind of expected I don't nearly like it as much as most others do. I prefer RE co-op to it. But different strokes.

I also got in the sequel so I'll try to blow through that this week.

Beating up buildings in Red Faction. A hell of a lot more fun once you figure out the mech spawn thing.

Hopefully so. L4D without three other actual humans is pointless.

Abyss sucks

Actually it's the majority, since the Tales fanbase generally agrees either abyss, graces, or destiny r is the best Tales to date. Vesperia is always around the middle of the tiers.

i don't understand why tales fans hold abyss so highly. characters suck, glyphs suck, battle system is full of wasted convoluted features, awful pacing, annoying main character until 30 hours in, horrible game length that overstays its welcome, load times, boring dungeons, stupid P'CHU blue thing that pops out when you do puzzles, horrible fps on world map, horrible world map in general. god, that game...ughhhhhhhh

I not going to even try to refute you guys.

Every single person I've ever talked to who played the US version of Abyss and US version of Vesperia, will always put Vesperia way above Abyss, and usually even rank Vesperia as the best Tales game they've played.

Every single person I've ever talked to who played the JP version of Abyss and JP version of Vesperia, will always put Abyss way above Vesperia, and usually even rank Abyss as the best or top3 Tales games they've played.  This includes English people playing the import and Japanese gamers.  Abyss was really popular in Japan, which is why it got anime, manga, etc...

How do I reconcile these two?  I think it's a combination of Abyss being geared more towards animu fans who are generally the people who like Tales games since they are animu rpgs and Vesperia being geared more (on purpose) toward western gamers with older lead and less animu story-telling and characters & I think the fact Abyss was one of those butchered localization Tales has some effect on the overall experience of people who played it in English.  Most people I talked to who played the English version skipped the skits because auto-scrolling with no voices made them lame and annoying to watch.  Yet, Abyss has probably the best skits in the series and most of the character development, great scenes are in them.  Other little things like the dub probably have some effect too; but the skit fuckup really made the US version experience worse I'm guessing.

Anyhow I'm not going to try to change any minds here.  I don't blame you guys for liking Vesperia more than Abyss because that is how every non-import person feels so there must be some truth to it and without having a chance to play the Team Destiny battle system games, there's no frame for comparison.

I thought Vesperia was at least better than "middle tier." But definitely not "one of the best Tales ever."

I'm more surprised you put Graces in there along with Abyss.

A great battle system + a non-terrible story (it's average, but I can't even say that about most Tales plots) = better than most Tales!

How I personally view Tales entries:
Title                       |   Battles      |    Story    |   Characters
Phantasia                       D                  C                  B
Destiny R                        A                 N/A               N/A                *haven't finished; like 25% in
Eternia                           C                   B                  A
Destiny 2                        B                  C                  B
Symphonia                     C                   B                  B
Abyss                             B                   A                  A
Rebirth                           A                   D                  B
Legendia                        F                   B                  B
Vesperia                        C                   C                  B
Graces                            A                  B                   B
Tempest                         D                  D                  B
Innocence                      B                  B                   B
Hearts                            B                  C                  B
Narikiri Dungeon X         B                   B                  C
ToS-2 fake                     F                   C                  C                    *couldn't finish; battle system was so bad I found it unplayable after 10-15 hours.  Goddamn pause after every combo where you can't do ANYTHING.  No fun.

Obviously music and graphics have some effect on the experience, but really, Tales games are enjoyable because of the battle systems, the characters and the plot.  Dungeon design has an affect too and every team destiny dungeon is pretty bad and mazey.  Legendia had the worst dungeons in creation and Innocence dungeons were inspired by Legendia.  Graces is the first TD game with fine dungeons.

Started playing Comic Jumper, think I'm about half way through. Basically everything surrounding the actual game is awesome, it's the game itself that is kinda not so good. It's just so long and dull and repetitive that finishing each stage is a bit of a chore. Still worth the $5 since everything else about the game is pretty entertaining. Great graphics too, way better than I was expecting. The cel-shading in world 2 especially is soooooo good.

yeah, the game is so fucking funny, but the gameplay is pretty boring. World 2 is pretty great. Thats the retro age is it? Or is that the Barbarian one? Watch out for the Manga levels, they will cook your retinas

Easy 200 though!

but even when they kinda miss, Twisted Pixel are still great. They take the mickey out of themselves quite admirably. In Captain Smileys base whe you check out "The Maw" machine.
Star says (something along the lines of): "The Maw was bullshit, you had to pay for DLC that should have been included with the game oin the first place". I laughed, then felt bad that I paid for the Maw DLC, which was indeed 3 seperate level unlock codes  :-\

But yeah love those guys. Can't wait for Ms Splosion Man and Gunstringer

SOCOM 4 kinda sucks....yeah

Just the mechanics and interface are nightmarish.  Probably the worst cover system in years, and worst third person camera, and best sense of "what the fuck is going on."

I became bomb tech at one point and I had a grenade launcher and shotgun, so I head to the remaining bomb.  I stand stand there and no prompt comes up and I can't tell if it's a proximity based thing and I'm mashing all the buttons because the game can't express jack shit despite a billion hud elements all over the place.  I eventually somehow killed myself with a smoke grenade and turned off my PS3.

The controls don't make sense neither.  Tap L2 = change to alt weapon.  Hold L2 brings up weapon change interface; d-pad switches between weapons, right analog stick switches between grenades.  In play the d-pad doesn't do anything yet).  When you run out of grenades, it doesn't automatically change to your other type, so you manually need to go in and change it.

So tap R2 is grenade and if you hold it down you aim, but L1 is aim and R1 is fire.  Wait, triangle is stance change and X is jump, but if you're crouching or prone and press jump, it's still jump instead of raise stance.

When you die it gives you the option to change spawn or change load out.  You accidentally press spawn when you want to change your gun, so you press circle because that's natural; that gives the option to quit the match instead of go back in menu options.

The camera is so bad that you're literally just watching a floating reticule because your guy is lost off screen somewhere.  The cover system is downright baffling and you're utterly annihilated trying to use a four foot high piece of wall.  And when you're running around normally, the guy is in the center of the screen.  When you aim, he goes to the faaaaaar left of the screen with no option to switch sides.  But when you click R3, it puts you in iron sights and you're back to aiming at the center of the screen.

So there is a jump button but the character can't clear two feet of cement.  wait, why doesn't it function as raise stance again?

to be fair, it's a beta.  but I had some fun with the MAG beta.  this one is straight up busted, and this is like the public public beta and the game releases in 10 days.

The only reason I ever thought Socom got as big as it did on the PS 2 was that it essentially it was the dominant shooter on that system. It controlled the niche of shooters on that system at that point and time.  A sort of right place right time situation.

Yeah, world 3 is the 1960s retro stage, world 2 is the barbarian one, my mistake. i'm almost done with the manga world now and it's so disappointing. they could have done an awesome spoof of shounen power-level manga like DBZ/Bleach/Naruto/One Piece etc, but instead they do some weird shoujo shit? plus this doesn't even look like any shoujo i've ever seen. meh, disappointing.

I guess after I beat the game I'm gonna have to leave my system on to rack up the 125,000 shots fired achievement. Seems like a perfect time to play more Ghost Trick.

A great battle system + a non-terrible story (it's average, but I can't even say that about most Tales plots) = better than most Tales!

How I personally view Tales entries:
Title                       |   Battles      |    Story    |   Characters
Phantasia                       D                  C                  B

Could say the same about halo, it's a foundation to be built upon. Or squandered in this case.

I think socoms gameplay style could have really taken off in the graw-gears period, before cod brought quick arcade shooting to the forefront again

Warhawk was kinda...eeeeeehhh...too.  Never seemed that populated when I played it, too.

when did you play it? Warhawk at the height of its popularity has got to go down as one of the best online multiplayer games this gen.

The Uncharted 2 multi was pretty fun.

Got DJ Hero 2 for the PS3 last weekend and I'm almost done with its empire mode on medium . I tried the final DJ battle against DJ Qbert earlier and got my ass kicked. Why is this so much harder than the rest off the game?!

Anyway, really fun game. Are the mixes in the first DJ Hero just as good? I'm thinking about getting it.

I like dance music and am particularly fond of mashup/bastard pop. Even so, there is a LOT of repetition across the songs used for the mixes in DJ Hero 1. There are some really good mixes, and then there are a bunch of mixes which sound almost the same. There are also some crap mixes where it's more abrasive and annoying.

What is "Empire Mode"? In DJ Hero 1, there's just setlists to play...

I played several Kinect games recently. The differences in front end implementation are stunning. Adventures! and the Kinect Hub have very similar models, where the "stickiness" of the cursor remaining on an interface icon feels similarly weighted, and the timing with which it initiates and processes item selection are nearly identical. Joy Ride seems to ape some of the conventions without actually understanding why it's doing it. Specifically, it makes the cursor stick when over a selectable area, but then the timing of initiating the "selection countdown" seems to trigger quite late. This works in negative conjunction with whatever tolerance they've built into the stickiness, so right when it seems like I'm going to get what I was trying to select, it instead leaps off the item and forces me to re-select.

Don't even get me started on the maddening, unclear, complete freak-out Joy Ride had when I tried to start a two-player race with my kids' accounts logged in. It managed to completely kill their enthusiasm for the game before it had even started.

Dance Central, OTOH, seems to have its ducks in a row. They made some very smart decisions about limiting the selectable items, and instead of using the "mouse pointer" and countdown timer model of everything above, there is a stack of selectable items, and then use relative limb speed to move between the selection. Did you ever own one of those cell phones with a jog wheel? This feels like that; you can very quickly move to the item you want, even within a large list. There is also simple and consistent separation between right-hand and left-handed operation, where a swipe with the right hand is "select" and left hand is "go back." Super simple, very low user stress.

Thanks, I'll skip it then. Empire is like a career mode. You go to different clubs around the world playing setlists and battling other DJs.

Definitely pick up the second one if you liked the first one... much more of a variety of songs to play.

I'm a few hours into Ghost Trick and it's pretty boring so far to be honest. None of the puzzles have been very satisfying to complete since all of the solutions have been obvious. You never really have to stop and think and figure out what to do next, so completing each puzzle isn't very fun. The story and characters are okay so far, but they're still not very interesting. Meh. I hope it starts to pick up soon, otherwise I'm just going to drop it.

Went back and played some Splatterhouse as well since this game has been sitting on my desk for 2 weeks. Game sucks. Mindless combat, bad graphics, poor hit-detection, glitchy, poor framerate, very repetitive & little variety, annoying collectibles, shit music (but at least it fits the game). I need to stop renting action games because every one I get is worse than the last.

I got to world 8-1 and keep getting my ass kicked.
I like how this game has a fun learning curve. It's a classic videogame. At some spots I keep dying but it's actually fun to improve your skills. And those graphics are gorgeous.

Bleeps and bloops sound like you're referring to minimal. Which is more German/Chilean rather than Japanese...

Played the first campaign in Left for Dead 2. Honestly for me that was lot better than anything in the original Left 4 Dead. My biggest complaint about left 4 dead is that it just felt very barebones and same-ish. I used the same weapons and every campaign felt the same to me in the original. The first campaign in the sequel has more variety for me than all of the original had.
