Starting playing Divinity II, put a few hours into it. Pretty good so far, but this game has more pixel hunting than a Sierra adventure game. Also I'm OCD when it comes to mind-reading, and I've already racked up a massive XP debt.

I played Lego Batman for about 30 minutes. One of the worst games I've played in awhile. It was just so fucking boring. I thought these Lego games were supposed to be good mindless fun?

Star Wars and Harry Potter are great. Batman is ok and Indiana Jones sucks. I'm guessing Pirates of the Caribbean will fall into the Indy category too.

Im just not going to waste any more time on those games becuase theres so much better stuff I could be playing. If I was one of those monster achievement hunters with 200k gamerscore who plays EVERYTHING yeah I can see why you'd play those games. Or if you were a kid.

Fucking kids these days, they have all these babby easy games "becuase theyre kids". When I was a kid I was playing Doom on Ultra Violence and hardcore shit like Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Hang On... kids these days need more balls.

Anyway my little brother has Sonic Unleashed which is sweet becuase its HARD. He couldnt get anywhere in it becuase he's used to this Lego shit. Sonic Unleashed is AWESOME. I will 1k it

you're right  :(

goddamn regenerating health and checkpoints every 5 seconds.

I had a friend tell me he was really pissed off because he turned off Devil May Cry 4 without finishing a stage and to his dismay he had to start the level all over again because there are no autosave checkpoints. And he HATED the game for this reason. FFS DMC levels are 10 minutes long, tops.

It's a sad state of affairs.

no excuses for the checkpoint thing.  short as the levels were, there's no reason to force people to replay large sections of a game because its "hardcore."  not everyone has the luxury to play for long amounts of time, and sometimes shit just comes up and you have to shut the game off where you are.  design a game where every room is its own unique fun challenge instead of setting up a game where the "fun" is playing long parts over and over again just so you can work on the one tough part 8 minutes into the level.

save points are way outdated, and the few games that still use them deserved to be called out.

With or without, that's a game design decision. Having constant checkpoints, or being able to save wherever you want is convenient but it also undeniably takes a lot of the emphasis off difficult parts in games and a sacrifice to immersion.

I disagree, Devil May Cry games are designed around short stages, which are meant to be replayed for optimum style points, speed and items. It's the actual basis for the gameplay to not have checkpoints every room, you are supposed to master each mission. If thats not for you, fine. Don't say that there's no room for games like that these days, some of us still enjoy challenging games where you are punished for your imcompetence.

I'm just trying to say that certain games are designed around certain types of saving progress (the Dead Rising games are another good example of restrictive saving actually being an integral part of the core game design). And in my opinion, game design should be as different and varied as possible. We sohuldnt only have the option of playing cakewalks that save every 5 seconds like Gears of War (which I would like to add is a great n00b ego inflater: "OMG I beat Gears 2 on Insane!!! I am 1337!!!1" I actually had a fucker voice message me on XBL with that crap. He was defriended straight away).

And re: "not everyone has the luxury to play for long amounts of time"; then just choose your games accordingly. Just becuase gamers are older nowadays and have responsiblities doesnt mean that every game has to let you be able to play for 5 minutes and still make progress. Which is why I keep a varied libarary of big immersive stuff I can play for hours, and the pick and play titles I can just jam with for 5 minutes if I'm strapped for time.

Like if you know you may not be able to play very much just do a level of Meat Boy, Peggle, Outrun, Rez or something.

I'm about to finish Splinter Cell Conviction and it has some shitty checkpoints. You clear a room, open your stash, upgrade, save checkpoint, die in the next room, come back and everyone you killed is alive again. And any lights you shot out before the checkpoint are back too. Can't wait to finish this turd.

finally got 200/200 in Bionic Commando Rearmed 2. That was such a chore with the glitched achievements and the fact that the game made my box hard freeze all the time.

At least the music was awesome. Especially the final boss music, which I cant find anywhere!

Probably should have played Conviction on Realistic, once Fisher gets all his gadgets and a 4 mark execute nothing is that hard. Except for the level where you cant be spotted or use your gadgets, which was terrible.

played more Sonic Unleashed and its so great. Very, very addicting.

I mean this game does it all. 3d speed sonic stages with 2d sections, great graphics and music, tons of shit to find and collect, 3d brawling and platforming, literally hundreds of sidequests, tons of NPCs, shit to buy, leveling and rpg elements...

game is a jack of all trades and master of none, but hey its fun!

Damn, I just had a fantastic scoring run in Futari but I died like 3 times on stage 2 and once on stage 3, so I didn't even make it to stage 5. If I can just have a run that goes well, I think I should be able to clear 450m, which might get me high enough on the leaderboards to upload a replay. :hyper

I've really grown a new appreciation for this game over the last couple weeks. It's already one of my favorite games of all time, and I think as a whole I prefer it over Ketsui because there's so much content (it's practically 6 games in one) and depth to the game. Either way, Futari, Ketsui, and Muchi Muchi Pork are the holy trinity of God-tier games.

see, even a borite can't conceive a game that he can't save scum his way through

i prefer a games that have each room set up as it's own challenge.  think res evil 4 or 5.  some rooms can take 10-15 to clear, just like a dmc stage, but if you fail/quit you're right there ready to take it on again.  having to run thru a long-ass level over and over again or work your way thru easy/tedious parts cuz yr stuck on one hard section is annoying and a waste of my time

FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU

Just no missed stages 1-3 in Futari Maniac, died once on stage 4, and then I chooooked in stage 5. I managed to cash in on most of the good scoring areas with a decent multiplier, but I died like 3 times before fighting Larsa so of course she buttraped me. God damn it. I got a 428m score though, so I'm happy about that at least. Ranked #37 right now (and I still couldn't upload a replay - wtf, is it only the top 10 or something? That's probably out of my league).

I should definitely be able to clear 450m, since I screwed up the stage 2 boss milking, which cost me 40m points. Oh well, maybe next time.

Nier is 10 bucks. Hmmmm

It's in a B1G1F sale at EB in Australia/NZ. I picked it up along with the Dreamcast Collection. Now I'm finished with Splinter Cell I'll probably start on Nier, although I hat ARPGs usually, too much button pressing :(

I'm a big-time HARDCORE GAMING dweeb with tons of free time to piss away on being awesome at whatever I play, but I can still admit this is horseshit. What would the harm be in adding the option of a babby mode for those that want it? You know, aside from the asspain you'd experience because some scrub with poor hand-eye coordination and a sporadic schedule would get to play the same games as you

edit: Maybe I'm just annoyed because I totally sympathize with a person wanting autosave in something as monotonous as DMC 4. I'm not gonna lie and say I didn't turn that crapfest off multiple times on the first play through just out of sheer boredom

Been playing Tales Of Vesperia a lot. I'm really shit at following guides (I get bored) so I've messed up 1 sidequest already (Where you have to find that guys brother), nearly at the Third act, one of the best RPGs I've played for a while, but there are a number of things that would make it better like making sidequests a little more logical, for instance, to get one important scene I needed t sleep at an inn 3 times in a row... Who's going to do that unless they're rinsing out the game for guide compilation purposes or reading a guide. I just skim read guide steps when I get to new areas to avoid spoilers, and even then there's little things to miss that can screw up entire sidequest lines. Stupid.

Yes, exactly so. The nature of Save/Load interaction for the player is inherently a form of meta-gameplay. In most games, there is a necessary choice by the player on whether to load from their last save point, or just continue with whatever score, resource, or story damage is inflicted by the current loss.

It's ignorant to simply state "PC games have had quicksave/quickload for years! Why not consoles?" - not just from a technology standpoint, but from a game design standpoint as well. The most surprising part is to see how few actual game designers pay enough attention to the influence of their Save Point, Checkpoint, and saved object status has on the overall game mechanics.

Streets or Rage 2 should slap the shit out of you.

Either way, classic genesis games off the top of my head:

Rocket Knight Adventures
Sonic 1
Ristar
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
Revenge of Shinobi
Streets of Rage 2
Ecco the Dolphin
Phantasy Star 4
Outrun
Outrunners
Alien Soldier
Super Fantasy Zone
Ranger X
Bonanza Brothers
Castlevania Bloodlines
MUSHA
Shining Force II
Darius II
Marvel Land
General Chaos
Gunstar Heroes
Contra: Hard Corps
Herzog Zwei
Thunderforce III and IV
Toe Jam and Early
Wonderboy
Wonderboy in Monster World
Aladdin
Panorama Cotton
Taz-Mania
Strider
Ghouls ‘N Ghosts
Warsong
Shining in the Darkness
Taz: Escape from Mars
Dynamite Headdy
Castle of Illusion
Space Harrier 2
Shadowrun

Better than SNES and my third favorite system.

Also, if you didn't play on hard more suck it.

gunstar heroes is so fucking wacky, you enter this level and it's a giant gaming board with a dice and you are already like "WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING???" then you throw a dice and you get pitted against a giant grinning face, then after that you fight a tiny man who keeps chasing you,and all of this happens after you just fought this robot that turned into a giant gun and also a giant sna...

I don't want immense level variety? I don't want to play an arcade style game that goes on and on and on and on and never fucking ends. Games that are an hour long, like Hard Corps Uprising and Metal Slug 3 are REALLY pushing it, but they make up for it for being excellent from start to finish. Gunstar is just boring half the time.

It does have pretty good boss battles though, I'll give it that. Too bad its best boss was even better in Bayonetta...

I think my save file right before the final was an hour and a half. Fuck that.

And the game would be better if they cut out that really awful horizontal shooter section.

bayonetta featured a transforming robo? ???

i don't remember any trasforming cube either,do you mean the ball that morphs? that barely counts as a sub-boss

and there is no transforming cube in gunstar heroes either!

He's talking about like the first "boss" which is a mini boss.

Well whatever it is, it's that one boss that transforms into a dragon, a bird, giant fists, etc etc. and then at the end you hit the climax move and smash it around like a volleyball. It's an homage to the Gunstar boss that transforms into 7 different things.

Gunstar Heroes is clearly a console game. Arcade run and guns take a huge dump all over it.

name some of these games released from the same time period

I don't remember what was out in the early 90s, but I'd take Contra 3, Metal Slug (1), and Sunset Riders over Gunstar any day. Maybe the game was great 18 years ago, but it's not so hot any more (I'm not saying it's bad either fyi). It's still better than shit like Vectorman at least.

Gameloft's World of Warcraft rip-off for iOS came out today. It's called Order & Chaos. It's $6.99 and you get the first 3 months free, with each month after that being $0.99. So far it's pretty amazing and impressive for an iPhone MMO. I'm really enjoying it and I'll probably stick with it. Here's my guy so far, a level 10 (I'm now 11) Ranger:

I know Gameloft is famous for rip-offery, but how is an MMO on a portable device specifically a Warcraft rip-off?

1000/1000 darksiders... well the only good thing about it,is that it was easy to 1000/1000

it wasn't bad but it really was uninspired and bland and lame which is exactly what you would expect when someone throws around some idea like "god of war + zelda" as i said i got the game thinking it would do new stuff with the zelda formula but no you get a boomerang,a hookshot, and a mask that let you see hidden object... oh and that zelda comparison really weighs on the game,at a certain point in the game you fight your dark side and i just can't accept that because you are one of the frigging horseman of apocalypse

see this fucker here? this is you! this guy doesn't need to fight his dark side!
anyway the combat at least made the game not a total bore, even tough enemy telegraph their attack and you have like an eternity to dodge, the game still manage to kill you once in a while as long as you are at least playing on hard, boss battles are fun,i liked the teleporting spider the best (coincidentaly the whole spider palace was the most inspired place of the whole game) but anyway lame bland western game overall it's what my weeaboo scale says

my next pick is probably going to be just cause 2... i know everybody suggest saints row 2 but one game has hookshots and the other has hookers, and hookshots just sound more wacky
