Now that I've 100% Yakuzer 2, maybe I should try to get back to Mad Max, which I've had for 2 years or more and the lack of story structure made me lose interest and now when I go back to it I have no idea what I"m actually supposed to be doing since there isn't really a narrative to speak of to push me along.

I have had a weird itch to go back to this trash game myself.

I’m not sure why. It’s like it’s almost really great.

IIRC there is a mission log so you can see what you need to do.

I liked the game but it definitely used the Ubi Soft open world game design of stuffing a bunch of repetitive side things to cover up a lack of story missions.  Like most Ubi open world games, I said fuck it after getting about 50% of the collectibles/powerups and breezed through the story missions.  Max and the car get ridiculously overpowered after a while.

Gave Shinobi III a go after reading it's praise in this thread. Definitely plays better than Revenge but no Yuzo Koshiro music is a big knock

Okay, Shinobi III is :lawd  :gladbron :whew :noah

Super-slick non-stop NINJA ACTION. Difficulty very gentle for this kind of game so I kinda breezed through most of it, but then wasted all my lives trying to get secret items on Stage 5 :lol Gonna try and beat it tonight.

The soundtrack blows though - if this had Yuzo jams (they could've even used the same ost as Revenge who cares) this would be tier 0 16bit action game, as it stands its tier 1

Lol I beat Mad Max in 3 days after having it for 3 years :lol

There is no narrative structure to push you along, just seemingly endless strings of "drive across the map to get scrap/car/person" or "drive across the map to kill person" missions over and over. Once in a while you'll get a convoy mission, but that's literally it. 3 total mission types. Doesn't matter if it's story or side mission stuff, that's it. So you have to be self motivated to finish it, and I only started playing it again because I needed a breather game between Yakuza 2 and 6 and this was what I had. No desire or incentive to wrap up the loose ends and do the collectathon shit. By the time you reach the last, idk, 3rd of the game, you and your car are so ludicrously leveled up that you basically have to put the controller down to die.

Final mission is laughable, literally a two hit kill on the ultimate boss battle :lol :lol :lol In the end it makes me think of the Friday The 13th game in that it's pretty much exactly the game you always wanted from the property as a kid, but it turns out it isn't really what you wanted after all.

I'd still play it over God of War 2018 any day.
A lot of open world games are like that. They aren't bad at all but simply dull. I would describe that LOTR game that released early this gen the same way.
Not every game learned the lessons from MGS5, Witcher 3 and Zelda BOTW and some were in development for so long they couldn't pick up the lessons at all.

In Mass Effect Andromeda you can clearly see some sort of turning point during development where they stopped to look at Destiny (and get their engine to work) and instead went back to a more narrative structure and better quality content instead.
I haven't played it but from what I read the Mirror's Edge sequel kinda suffered the same way. A game made open world that didn't need to be open world.

I’ve been home sick for a few days. The upside is that I finally had an opportunity to put 10 hours into Dragon Quest XI. I might change my mind in 50 hours, but right now it’s the best game in the series. People claim that it is a 100+ hours but I hope I can finish it much faster. It’s very easy and you can skip almost all combat against random enemies without feeling under leveled. My only complaint is that the graphics are occasionally a mix between “realistic” and “cartoon”. Maybe that’s a side effect of using Unreal Engine. DQ8 was more consistent in its art style.

I like both games for different reasons. Also it's funny how one of those games have dialogues written for 5-year olds while the other for 40-year olds and it's the other one that is not an RPG :lol

I like how I can't tell which of the two games you're talking about.

Iirc there’s no real reason to make hard choices in god of war. You will almost max out every skill by the end of the game even if you ignore most of the side quests.

Playing God of War. The game is 32% Metroid Prime + 32% The Last of Us + 32% Dark Souls + 4% God of War.

Metroid Prime 3 maybe. Though really it's like Skyward Sword when it comes to these Zelda/Metroid comparisons (hub world + open corridors that are connected to it, tons of tiresome handholding and talking from a shitty sidekick). Dark Souls I don't see at all, if anything there's Assassin's Creed in it because of its annoying icons and redundant stat building.

Cold Steel 4 really sucks. About to enter the final dungeon like 110 hours in. Will have taken me 3 months to get through.

This game is never coming out in English and that’s a good thing because it’s saving you 240 hours of your life.

First game of next arc is either Falcom understanding how bad they fucked up and making a short tightly focused game around a 4-6 person cast, or I’m out of this series for good. Cold Steel ended up being the DMC2, MGS4, AC3 of the franchise and they wasted 8 years of development on it. What a disaster.

Shit, Tokyo Xanadu was a better Cold Steel than Cold Steel lol

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia I picked this one up as a diversion from Wizardry 8 (trying to max everything takes a while). Really quite good. At the beginning the Glyph system annoyed me. But I've grown to really like it. I'm about 72% of completion. So I'm almost done. Been a good time. I still got SOTN to re-complete. Was Protrait of Ruin any good? I seem to remember it had a drawing mechanic or something.

My son bought a digital copy of Death's Gambit I haven't played it much. Just watched the first 30 or so minutes. It seems like a pretty heavy handed rip off of Dark Souls. When they said you had to ring two bells I literally laughed aloud. What's the general consensus on this? I have to admit I'm intrigued.

On the Dad of War front, I only played a few hours and I couldn't really get why the hype. I felt when it came to story focus, other games did it better. When it came to combat, other games did it better. Doesn't seem like a bad game I was just not blown out of the water like everyone seems to be by it.

I have 240k Exp now and 600k Gold :lol I think you are right but the extra layer of challenge doesn't hurt. I also think I've hit a wall finally - Tyr's Gauntlet in the Realm Between Realms is very hard. I will try to hunt some Valkyries, do the Musphelheim Arena and Nifelheim Arena (if I am able...) first and then see what skills are worth buying.

:picard at the game teasing 4 additinal Realms with their Towers but you cannot access them at all (?). I've checked some achievements and nothing hints at those Realms being available. In fact I have only 2 more left - (story-wise) plus a bunch of crafting/ skills related. What a waste, such an opportunity to make a grand God of War title.

No qualms about the camera or any other mechanic in the game. Everything works pristine and the Father/Son dialogues more than make up for any other shortcomings.

I think two of the realms are basically like horde/challenge modes. I don’t know if that covers them all or not, but there are at least two you can go to, but have no story elements

Assassin's Creed Question:

Origins finally hit $20 (took long enough)
Odyssey is $30

My friend told me to skip Origins and save $20 and 100 hours and play Odyssey instead for the better world map, better characters and story, better gameplay.

I've been playing the AC games in order (just years behind) and next up after having played Syndicate this year I was gonna play Origins. Plus Egypt is cool, right? I heard it's like BoTW??

Should I skip Origins for Odyssey? Also there is a version of Origins for like $10 that gets rid of all the videogame parts and just let you explore the world map for the sightseeing. Wondering if that would be a better alternative since that's mostly what I play AC game for, virtual tourism.

But who knows  :larry

After playing RDR2 on Xbox One, playing Origins was like.. going from a 5 star restaurant to a fucking Mickey D's

I just started Odyssey, and finished Origins (and its expansions).
Personally I like Egypt more than Greece, so the world in Origins was absolutely phenomenal.
The rest is almost the same, with Odyssey having a couple of additions like dialogue choice and more naval combat (I hate that shit tho).
I say pick whichever setting you like more, they're very very similar aside from that.
Also some areas in Origins already look like Greece, lol.

I only played one (platinumed Odyssey) but talked with a coworker who played (plat) both:

- Origins has better characters
- Odyssey has better mechanics, world, maps, quests
- Origins has crocs/ hippos/ chariots
- Odyssey has naval combat
- Odyssey is much longer

Basically do you prefer ancient Egypt or ancient Greece?
JFC, Origins is like 80 hours.

I'd say that you should just play Origins. Lot of mechanics in Odyssey feel undercooked, like it was pushed out of the door too soon. Odyssey overall feels kinda floaty whereas Origins had this more grounded feel. It's like they forgot to animate impact in Odyssey. Atmospheric effects like dustclouds, sand and whatever were done better in Origins as well giving it a much more lived-in feel.

Pick Odyssey if you want lots of content since it feels like quantity over quality. Also, if you play it for virtual tourism, Odyssey basically stripped the historical stuff out of the game. The only thing you have left is the setting itself, but no background info on the stuff that's in the game.

Let's see, right now I'm playing:

  • R6: Siege. Great game, great mechanics, amazing/awful community.
  • BF1 singleplayer. No time for the multiplayer. Honestly, not a big fan of the WW1 weapons and vehicles. Wish it had a lot less stealth missions too. I only played a couple hours but apparently I'm halfway done.
  • Witcher 3 but that was on an indefinite hiatus. It's such a lovely world that I'm kind of afraid to finish it and end up just chasing side-quests.
  • Mirrors Edge Catalyst, same situation as Witcher 3.
  • Battlefront 2 (the second Battlefront 2). Hate the haters, it's fun.
  • Last game I finished was Ghost Recon Wildlands. Kind of meh as far Tom Clancy war porn goes.

I'm playing these right now
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: I'm having a ton of fun with the world of light still and haven't unlocked everything yet. I'm just soaking it all in not trying to rush things. Some of these Spirit Fights are intense (I'm looking at you Inceneroar in the power plant and  'The Boss' Spirit Challenge  :-\)
- Mass Effect Andromeda: Still plowing through. My FemRyder is an awesome, cute and sarcastic military conquerer. I still really like this game (much more than I thought I would) but I'm starting to think I should finish the story first and then do the sidequests.
Most sidequests don't seem to add much to the story except for specific character missions and I might be burned out before I finish the story which would be a shame.
- Battlefield V: Despite having a ton of 'if only they had' moments, I still enjoy casually playing this with my friends. No M1 garand or D-Day is still a crime!
- Insurgency Sandstorm: Shooter of the year, buy now!

Still wrapped/downloaded but planning to start
- Assassins Creed Oddessey: Got AC3 for cheap once on Steam but haven't dipped into the AC world since 2. I really look forward to playing this.
- Final Fantasy XIII: Supposed to look amazing on the Xbox One X.
- Final Fantasy XV: again a 4K stunner

Also the Fire Emblem Warriors LE should be here by Christmas and I'm seeking a Fire Emblem Fates LE.  :thinking

Paused but planning to return
- Xenoblade Chronicles 2: I must be at about 75% or so.
- Zelda BOTW: Got it on Wii U finished it 100% then double dipped on Switch for the DLC but I haven't played it for a while
- Mario + Rabbids: I must be near the end boss but I remember getting my ass kicked in the final world and trying to do challenges to level-up
- Super Mario Oddessey: I remember being stuck in a Broodals boss rush thing but there's still more content to discover
- Mega Man X Collection: Finished 1, moved on to 2, which I didn't like as much and still need to finish
- SNES Classic: I thought I had almost finished Final Fantasy VI (boy was a I wrong  :lol)
- Wii U: I still have a playthrough of Earthbound sitting on this, that I have to get back to  :doge

Anyway many awesome video games to play on my OLED :rejoice

And so little time to play them  :-\

The last time I saw a credits screen was when I finished Shadow of the Tomb Raider 100% in my first playthrough a few weeks ago. Really great game if you like the exploring parts of Tomb Raider.
But lacking action if you're there for the shoot bang.

Ate shrooms and played 6 hours of Red Dead 2 last night. At first I wasn't too into it, but it clicked with me and I had an amazing time. My favorite part was sitting around the camp fire at my camp and shit-talking the other members of the gang. I was in tears laughing. You can call the old man a drunk and call him out on being a lazy boozer and then defuse the situation and say you were just teasing. You can tell it hurts him, though. Eventually after insulting everyone, they leave the fire and do other things, but a few minutes later they wander back and you can continue the shit-talk. I cannot wait for the PC version.

Oh and the last time I tripped I played some Tetris Effect and got a Decahexatris. Pretty proud of that.

Finished Trails of Cold Steel 4 (import) at 120 hours. Worst written rpg & worst sequel I've played since Xenosaga ep2. The Erebonia arc was dogshit and retroactively makes Sky/Crossbell worse because all the subplots left from Sky/3rd/Crossbell are wrapped up half-assed and terribly in this along with the Erebonia arcs. First half of Kiseki (sky+crossbell+erebonia overarching arc) is done finally.

Some hints for Pt.2 are kinda interesting, but unless Kondo gets his shit together the series is gonna die way before it ever finishes. After the Japanese fan backlash of CS4 and the games already only selling like 100k each with no western sales to help, I wouldn't be surprised if the next game in a few years opens with like 50k sales and the series dies. Maybe they can get around this by making a game that's not 120 hours next time so the English translators can actually get an English version out and help add some western sales. Also would assuredly be a better game if it was like 50 hours instead since the only difference between a 100 hour Sky/Crossbell arc and the 400 hour Erebonia arc is 300 hours of filler in Erebonia which causes Kondo to write nothing but nonsense and asspulls to stretch out the plot so goddamn long.

Hopefully Cold Steel 3/4 never come out in English. Would save some people 240 hours of their life.

I have only played CS1 and did like what I played, although the school stuff felt superfluous and could've been cut and the game would've been all the better for it.

Iconoclasts through PS+ - another hyped indie Metroidvania, another time of finding it meh. I don't know what it is with these games. I guess I generally don't like the fake pixelart or western attempt at animu. Plus merely competent level design just isn't enough these days, it's really not spectacular. Perhaps the genre isn't for me anymore, but then again, I recently replayed Dawn of Sorrow and still loved it.

The Japanese backlash was basically just that it was an unsatisfying conclusion or non-conclusion to a lot of plot lines that fans had stuck around for a decade waiting to see play out.
Yeah, CS1/3 are the best in the Cold Steel series even if they're not super great and have zzz school stuff (CS3's school stuff is a lot better and less annoying than CS1).

Basically imo Ao > Zero > 3rd > Sky SC > CS3 > Sky FC > CS1/2 > > > CS4

I don't know if you played Tokyo Xanadu but I feel like it ended up being a better Cold Steel than Cold Steel. It's nothing amazing but at least TX told a full plot in a single game while developing characters, doing school stuff and having something interesting actual story bits in the end and true end. CS's main issue was just that it got too bloated stretched out to 4 games and they had no plot to fill 4 games so it's just a ton of filler.

To be fair it's easy to see how Falcom got into this mess in the first place. Cold Steel 1 was their first full 3d rpg and development had issues transitioning and so they couldn't get a full Erebonia FC game done within the development budget/timeframe so they lowered their goals, got out half a game with a cliffhanger ending and then they were like "whoops, now all we've got plot-wise in this game is 20 hours of plot, but no one will buy a 20 hour rpg in Japan so let's fill it with 40 hours of filler"

Then CS1/CS2 sold pretty well and so when they transitioned to PS4 with upgraded visuals and engine for CS3 they figured they could just copy the formula of CS1/2 and have CS3 be half a game with a cliffhanger ending. CS3 turns out a lot better than CS1 because you can tell it wasn't a rushed decision but they knew from the start and development was probably smooth so it feels like a complete game even if the plot ends with a cliffhanger and not much is explained. But then CS4 they run into the same issue as CS2 with not much actual plot to tell but an expectation that the game better be 120 hours because CS3 was 120 hours and so this time instead of 40 hours of filler, they try to come up with 100 hours of filler and you get basically the most boring game ever made lol

The good news is that CS4 wipes the franchise slate clean. None of the characters from Sky/Crossbell/Erebonia have to show up in the next arc and none of the plotlines are really left either. So they're free to just reboot the series with a new arc in a new setting and new cast and try to tell a good tale. If they learn from everything that went wrong in Cold Steel 1-4, maybe they'll get the series back on track. If they think CS1-4 were great games and pat themselves on the back, the next game will probably be the same with dating sim, school sim, a million characters and 100+ hours and it'll be bad again. I feel it's 50/50 which way it goes. Just depends on how much ego Kondo has or if he's actually reading the Japanese impressions/reviews and realizing he fucked up.

I also wouldn't be surprised if CS4 represented a FFXII moment for the team where they broke down under stress of it all and it's going to be tough getting their shit back together going forward because they're not motivated anymore. A lot of the game of CS4 feels like a game developed by a team that has no love/motivation left for the Erebonia story and is simply checking off boxes like a machine  :'(

Just bought Divinity 2

I loved the first one even though I didn't complete it. I sort of fizzled out near the end. I adore the exploraion and how precious EXP can be. Makes for a very different old school experience.

Got back to playing Celeste on Switch. Got through star 5 artic ridge which was my least favorite stage so far with all the megaman style wind directions. Then got through stage 6 mirror temple which was awesome and my favorite stage in the game so far. Playing this on the pro controller man the d-pad is rough for this. When I first booted it back up I was going in all sorts of directions I didn't want to constantly but after an hour or so getting back in the groove I probably only attribute like 1 in 5 deaths to Celeste jumping the wrong way. Still a bit annoying.

Divinity 2 is a lot like Divinity 1, but much better in every single way.

I cant wait to sink my teeth into it. If theres one thing it does that most RPGs have left me cold with is that initial sense of overwhelming content and systems. Sort of like Piranha Byte games but obviously way more polished.

Boss fight in stage 7 Reflection in Celeste was dope af. The only thing I didn't like in stage 7 world was the feather controls are pretty touchy/inprecise. Just like with the wind stuff I don't like when the game fucks with my platforming physics/controls ><

Really enjoying this game.

Gave AC Origins a try. Ended up playing like 3 hours straight and did almost everything in the opening settlement and surrounding areas. Game has that addictive, one more quest/?/puzzle feel. I like the new revamping of the AC controls and combat. Combat is definitely more fun than the braindead misery it's been in AC1-Syndicate even if it's just dodging and countering. Climbing mountains BoTW style is neat and I like the main guy.

I can see this getting boring after 100 hours of doing the same stuff over and over again, but otherwise seems cool. Not ready to really dig into a long ass game like this right now so will put it back in the backlog but will definitely try to give it a full playthrough later this year.

How do you access the photo mode? I see all the photos from other players on my map but I didn't see any button/option to start photo mode?

Also I borrowed Megaman 11 and turned it on and tried out Bounce Man's stage and after like 15 mins I'm like wtf and kinda over it. Which is weird because I really enjoyed MM9/10 and I don't mind challenging stuff like Celeste or Hollow Knight or whatnot, but MM11 was just wtf. Maybe that was a bad first stage to try.

Yeah, that stage is fucking weird. Try some Block Man, Acid Man, Blast Man or Fuse Man.
I think Block Man is the 'official' starter.

If you do try Bounce Man, hold the Jump button. It suddenly works.
Like those damn elevator thingies in Sonic 3. But Bounce Man is one of the last 2 or 3 stages you should tackle.

I've come to the conclusion that I should not have bought Tetris Effect

The final stage on normal is the most rage inducing game I have played in many many many years. I almost threw my VR headset out the window. I got through every stage until the final stage on normal and beat the final stage on beginner, but I've been trying for 3 fucking hours straight on this stage and I just can't beat it. The worst part is I do ok until the final SPEED 13 bit that kicks in at 60 lines and you have to do 30 lines at speed 13. I just cannot.play.tetris.at.speed 13. And it takes like 6 mins to get to 60 lines so 3 hours of 6 mins over and over again to hit line 60 and then I lose in 20 seconds, repeat 6 mins to try for 20 seconds -> repeat.

The worst part is the first time I did the stage I had a really lucky streak and died at 89 lines/90 lines. I haven't been able to get past like 72 lines ever since. No matter how clear I have the field before hitting line 60, I start fucking up left and right because it's just too goddamn fast. I feel like this game requires FGC level reflexes at that speed, how the fuck is an old guy like me supposed to beat this :(

Good game, but man that last bit is absolute bullshit. I'm pretty close to just deleting the game and never touching it again :\

An hour later I'm still at it, I don't know why :( Just got a run up to 82/90.
This is seriously the hardest game I've played in my entire life. fuck.

I have about 610 fights cleared in the World of Light, so almost there. Then I'll go through the classic mode with all of the fighters one-by-one.
