Did I miss something? (Conduit)
« on: June 14, 2009, 03:57:49 AM »
I'd like to think I hover around the hive.  Sometimes I dip in and out.  I'm not that bad, really I promise!  But I don't get why The Conduit is being heralded as the second coming. Or even a second look. This is coming from someone who wanted these types of games after hand waving with Corruption for many hours. It looks bland and gaudy. Premise is tripe.  Developer with zero track record. Aesthetics are a mangy quilt of amateurishly applied graphical techniques.  As far as I know the pros are:

-customizable controls
-customizable hud
-wiispeak for players in your proximity
-uses the system code instead of the friend code
....umm
.... I'm out.
I get excited over many b- wii efforts, but ahdungedit this time.

So , seriously did I miss something?

Maybe because it's an actual game being developed for the Wii by a 3rd party and not a half-assed port/sequel/shovelware/exercise game?

Boom blox? Mad World? HOTD Overkill? Kororinpa 2? Little Kings Story? Tiger Woods 10? Shaun White (stfu its good)?

There's far more interesting stuff yet to be released as well.

The reason why I'm interested in it, and not in an entirely positive way, is because it seems like a shooter you might have played on the PS1 or N64 days.  It's a throwback to the days of no AI, corridors and basic combat (shoot until enemy is dead).

I don't get why a lot of people on gaf are hyped for it.  The response I keep reading is that people want to support the developer...what? I don't understand it.  And I think IGN hypes up everything high voltage does, so a lot of fan hype for the game/developer might rub off from them.

Not many medium to high profile FPS games on the Wii, or medium to high profile Wii games in general for that matter.  Might as well hype what you got.

They want it to sell well so guys like Andrex and Scrubking can say, "See?  Third party non-party game efforts DO sell well on the Wii!  Now where's my Resident Evil 5 and Final Fantasy XIII port?"

I want to play it out of morbid curiosity, and I think they're actually trying with the controls, so that's good, I guess.  The game still looks crushingly mediocre, however.

Red Steel 2 is the first Wii FPS that I'm actually fairly excited about.

The customisable controls and HUD are great ideas (ideas that have been floating around the internet for years admittedly).  Sadly, the game itself looks awful.

GEIST WAS AWESOME, DUDE!

FUCKING GHOSTS AND SHIT. M RATED NINTENDO GAME. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Man, I remember being hyped for Geist. Like big time hyped. What a complete and utter letdown. I think there might have been one, maybe as much as two, things that I can point at and say that they were halfway decent. None of those things have to do with the gameplay, though, or the story. Or the controls. Uh...or the graphics.

Conduit looks like it has decent controls at least.

You don't have to push the screen, the options make it so you can adjust how far you move the reticle before the screen moves, and how fast it does it.

Geist multiplayer was hilarious.  It was the worst case of split screen multiplayer just not working.  You were supposed to hide in objects and surprise the other player when they got close, but they could see on your screen that you were hiding in the fire extinguisher or something like that.  It was almost as hilarious as Metroid Prime 2 multiplayer aka stay in morphball mode and lay bombs.

Halo redefined and set the bar for shooter controls on a console.  I've never heard anyone but the most elite PC shooter douchebag calling the gunplay "clunky."  It was damned near perfect.  Are you just trying to get a rise out of people?

Halo is popular probably because whoever the hell was lining up for the midnight launch of a green and black monolith from microsoft needed to validate their purchase until the pc ports started rolling in.  And LAN.  I've played enough multi at a friends house to be disgusted with the halo universe in addition to the eww eww molasses controls. Most "aiming" is lining up via strafing.

I've been playing Halo for 8 years now.  I don't play as much as I used to and by no means am I some kind of Halo fanboy, but you are still so very wrong that it hurts.  The movement speed of the game was smartly slowed down so it would work better on consoles, but the controls can be as slow or as fast as you want them to be via one simple slider.

And I've played a lot of games where you actually do have to strafe to line up your shots, but Halo is definitely NOT one of them thanks to a number of factors including a bit of auto aim and sticky aim.  Seriously, I've never even heard anyone voice this specific complaint about Halo.

Actually, Haze proved that mediocre looking FPSs can get hype if they are PS3 exclusive, and Killzone 2 proved that PS3 exclusive FPSs can get hype even if the developer has a bunky track record.  I'm sure if Conduit was a PS3 exclusive, there'd be a pretty similar distinguished mentally-challenged fellow jamboree happening over there, just with different avatars.

Thank God it's not a PS3 game or we'd see an avalanche of stupid avatars and a 100 MB BruceLeeRoy OP.  As it is, I've only seen one Conduit avatar.  I think we dodged a bullet.

Yeah but those avatars along with the ones with cats in them are helpful in figuring out who to ignore. Plus when you have one of those bullshit OPs you know that you will at least get a few hours where they will all be in there saying "OMG EPIC POST!!!!!111 RAWR!" while the rest of the forum becomes tolerable.

To be fair to Haze, the developer did put out four good games and there was reason to look forward to it.

To be fair to Killzone 2, a lot of the hype could have come from the graphics alone.  I would say Liberation showed that they were capable devs, but it doesn't seem like a lot of people played it.

To be fair to The Conduit, it doesn't look awful and even if they're unproven, so were the devs behind Dead Space and that game turned out good.

But yeah, Haze and Killzone 2 hype was because they were PS3 exclusive and The Conduit is because it's for the Wii.

The Wii Far Cry game had a way around this.  I think that if you held down a button, the cursor would stick in place but the screen would move as you waggled.  Was supposed to work well.

I didn't think Liberation was really all that good.  It was a real let-down for me.

Also, I would never call High Voltage Software unproven.  They are certainly proven.  Proven to generate garbage at a statistically significant level.  Yeah, EA Redwood Shores managed to break their crap-cycle, but one case does not indicate a trend.

I don't think the Conduit is going to be terrible, this seems to be one of their games that truly reaches and attains the level of serviceable.  The only reason anyone would give a shit about this game is if it were exclusive to a console, though.

Regardless of exactly how good you thought Liberation was, it was a solid, and most importantly, a fully playable game unlike other games from Guerrilla before it.  Well, except for the DLC ending nonsense.

And I don't have a history on High Voltage software other than people saying they made shitty licensed games, Hunter the Reckoning (which is supposed to prove they made good games or something, but Hunter the Reckoning wasn't good, so I don't get the point) and now three Wii games.  If they just made licensed games, I would say they're unproven with making a game their vision or whatever.  I'm almost sounding like those people on gaf who support them because they are putting effort into a Wii game, as if that means jack shit if the final product is bad.  I'm just willing to let them surprise me by making a good game.  The Conduit and Grinder seem alright; the Gladiator game is the ugliest game ever.

I'm expecting the single player to be a chore and some dumb fun multi.  A concern is if this game is going to be broken in record time for an fps.  You have an amateur dev incapable of releasing a beta on wii, incapable of patching bugs or weapon balance issues, etc.  If there is a single moderate exploit to be found it will happen. The number of potential online players could hinder it too.

I give High Voltage credit for trying to actually push the hardware instead of putting the least possible effort forth like many have.  Unfortunately, they are making games in overdone genres. People like Metroid Prime because it's NOT a Halo killer, it is its own thing.

And I'd rather have a Free Radical multiplayer FPS game anyways. TS2++++ if you hafta.
