It is true that Elvis is only considered a legend to white people.

see Flava Flav and Rev Run's take on "Fight the Power."

General sentiment on Elvis for non-whites.

You a Public Enemy fan?

You should go write more stupid movie scripts before you harp on me being uncultured.

There's a correlation between my screenwriting and your lack of culture? The more I write, the less cultured you become?

That explains a lot.

I love how you ride on your high horse. How do I lack culture? What do you know about me? We never converse. We never talk. I don't talk to anyone here on a regular basis. I wasn't even being serious and was mocking the majority of posts found in that SOHH thread.

Himu...

Elvis influenced the British invasion. To me the best analogy for Elvis is that of a sampler. Today, if I listen to a rap or electronic or whatever song and hear a cool sample...I'll look it up. Many white people were introduced to BB King, Little Richard, etc through Elvis. And they'll tell you that he helped their careers enormously. Elvis wasn't just an American legend, confined to our borders.

I didn't say he was.

I wasn't being serious. I just think those posts in that SOHH thread are hilarious. The biggest goldmine for me was the second post or so,"Only crakkaz consider Elvis a legend" and it just killed me.

I respect Elvis a lot. I don't like his music, but he's definitely a legend.

Prole has a SOHH account.

I don't think Elvis was or is very popular outside the US and the Commonwealth (to be fair to him, most of the world didn't have access to record players or imported records in the 50s). But I don't think he even had a number one hit in a country like Germany.

The Beatles and Jackson had more universal appeal.

It's anecdotal, but there was story running on the local news today about people in rural Oklahoma raiding their local Hastings, Wal-Marts, and truck stops and buying up everything Michael Jackson related. It boggles my mind, but there you go.

I assume the source for these figures is Colonel Parker because the show wasn't even live in America or Europe. Yet they claim a billion live viewers? 1.5 billion total?

In comparison, only 1 billion people saw the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in 2008!
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/olympics/article6256063.ece

So the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, broadcast in every country in 2008, gets 1 billion viewers. Yet Elvis' concert, shown in just 40 countries in 1973, gets 1.5 billion?

Is anyone really that credulous?
