Well, yesterday Lee was like. He added liek 10000000000000000000000000 new processes to this shit for a stupid reason. So, I'm working on those. And then on Monday he changed the kind of ID numbers we send to Sage which also required like drastic, massive revision to work that was already done. So, I'm still working on those when I realize that like. The new ID numbers don't work for the Wholesale sales which I was told would NEVER go through Swan but now ARE which was last week's major drastic fiasco. And so he's like us the PO and I'm like You told me we'd never use the PO and h'es like lol well now use the PO. Which is another majopr revision because some things don't have a PO and some do and some don't have the default ID and some do and it alsor requires a massive reqrite on the backend because I now have to account for TWO kinds of IDs and still interpolate them in a common way and I'm doing this and this fucking program crashes and DELETES EVERYTHING I DID TODAY, which is enough of a fucking blow, but the my computer is like WHAM and fucking blue screen and I lost it and I was like "I WANT A LIST OF FINAL CHANGES TODAY I CANT KEEP REWRITING ALL OF THIS SHIT AND DO the HOME SHOPPING NETWORK SHIT AND DO THE WEBSITE AND HANDLE THE EBLAST AND HANDLE FACEBOOK" on and on and I kicked my chair and I told everyone that if I dared to walk back in the door they should kill me and then I typed up a little letter in Word that said "Dear Police, if I was killed it's okay, I asked them to" and then I sat in the bathroom for like 40 minutes and now I'm here again.

I work as a web programmer for a company that does work for other companies. Small and medium sized, mostly, with start ups all in the mix. I seemingly get stuck working on start up after start up, and let me tell you... all of their business ideas suck. I don't think I've worked on a start up yet that has survived more than a few months. I took a look today at one we launched about three months ago... not a single sale. Par for the course.

Hey, who am I to complain? They want to waste their money on some dumb idea, more power to them and more job security for me. But it sure would be nice to work on something someone would actually use. It's hard to get motivated when you know it's ultimately a waste of time.

I'm usually working on things some dude scribbled down on a napkin while drunk in some bar. No other way these folks could figure these ideas would actually work. I mean, sure, they could work, and I could win the lottery tonight. These usually aren't people with trackrecords of success with other ventures or with an idea that immediately just says "now why didn't I think of that?"

One guy's idea was to start a website to facilitate the sale of used textbooks in a marxist economic system. You would list your textbook. Other people would come looking for your textbook and they could buy your contact information. You would then work out the terms of the transfer of the book on your own. The kicker is that you could only sell your book for $50, no matter what the book is or what condition it is in. You have little control over whose contact information you get, either. If there are 100 listings of the same book, you get whatever book has been listed the longest (you can filter by school, that's basically it). The double kicker is that the website only sells you the contact information, so it's not like there is any way to enforce the price limit.

When I first heard the idea, I thought it was a joke. Hasn't this dude heard of eBay? Free markets?

Anyway... not one sale so far.

I'm not privy to the full bill they give some of these people, but I know they bill my hours at $150 per (I sure would love to be paid at that rate), and then there's design time, QA, hosting, and whatever other fees they drop on top of that. It's not cheap.

Often "the fact fact" can be replaced by a short nominalization, but it would sound awkward here: "I only envy you because of your living in NY."

It works better in other situations:

Haha. Sort of? It's well documented. But it deals with so many proprietary systems, that more than figuring out the code, you have to know why it's doing what it's doing

At my job today, we spent half a day with people from other branches interpreting some vague directions given by our VP. The thought of just asking him what he meant never entered in their minds. I think most, myself included, were just glad that instead of doing real work, we did this instead. We came up with a vague interpretation and went to lunch. I came back and then drove around for a couple of hours to see how my projects were going. I then returned to my office and prepared some accounting for a $50,000 payment we owe a contractor. I then responded to an e-mail and headed home.
