WRPGs haven't evolved in style since the mid 1990s. I don't see why JRPGs need to be held to a higher standard.

You could almost make a case for them devolving when you factor in the Ultima series. But honestly, 1990's WRPGs still blow out modern day JRPGs in lots of aspects.

That aside, I'm really digging some of the artwork in this game but I still want a true Breath of Fire 6.

Sadly, the resources required to create a game with the depth and complexity of Ultima 7, with modern-day graphics, would be insanely ridiculous.
