Who’s excited for Luke Cage in four days?!

Thinking of rewatching JJ soon too.

It was the perfect November show, I absolutely loved how they made the city/urban stuff feel in Winter on-screen. Living in Boston, it was perfect.

I was pleasantly surprised with JJ, so while I’m not super excited for Luke Cage I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. DD s1, s2, and JJ have all been excellent so far.

It'll be the next american TV season I watch for sure.  Luke Cage is a great character so the show has a bunch of potential.  Hope it's not a single arc dragged out way too long like the other Marvel TV shows though.

Yeah. I dunno if that's a Netflix requirement or what but Marvel's 13-ep seasons should really be 10 eps, I feel. Game of Thrones that bitch.

That said I feel DD s2 was the best at not falling prey to that (packing it with both Punisher and Elektra probably helped.) Don't know if LC will have enough content but the trend seems to be that they're getting better at filling that episode count.

Iron Fist in the first half of 2017 and then The Defenders team-up in the second half. Can't fucking wait.

Though, personally, I'm a little annoyed that DD s3 and JJ s2 have to wait until 2018. But whatevs. The Defenders is only 8 episodes so it should be pretty fucking awesome.

*crickets chirping*

Anyway, we finished the first season of Orange is the new black. We like it a lot. Refreshing to have a rather serious prison depiction who isn't just "8am getting shanked, 12am riot, 2pm getting raped". I can see how the show will weaken though, because it's already playing a tad loose with the chronology of events and milking character interactions through a series of twists to keep the story fresh.

Awesome cast and good writing though. N.Lyonne :lawd

Final ep wasn't as cliffhangery.  So that's good.  Was actually kind of a decent final episode for the season, but the last 5 minutes teaser for S3 makes S3 look pretty dumb.  Probably not gonna watch S3, will read the episode summaries and hope it's the final season.

Fairly certain is. It was renewed but for a shorter season. IIRC it's gonna be 8 or 10 eps instead of 13.

Me too. But Luke Cage has the blaxploitation thing going for it and Ali Shaheed Mohammed is scoring it so I'll be checking it out.

Yup. It's very high on my "shows I say I'm interested in but won't watch for 3-10 years" list.

Gonna finish up DD s2 before Luke Cage drops Friday. I got bored about 5-6 episodes in and haven't gone back to it since. Thought it was just me, but 2 of my friends dropped it around the same time too. I agree that Marvel should shorten their seasons to 10 episodes.

Been watching Atlanta and Queen Sugar. Hooray for decent/good black shows!

Finished Ballers s2 last night, but that show is so uneventful and boring. Just like Entourage and even worse, How to Make it in America. Best thing about it is the soundtrack. They're lucky enough to have The Rock as their star, so the ratings will never drop.

Watched Jean Claude Van Johnson. It's the Amazon Studios pilot season episode. (also there's a new version of The Tick)

I would happily watch a whole season of this. It's so painfully self-aware, it's difficult not to laugh, even though you're supposed to laugh. The featured songs are great. It's cheesy and fun and JCVD's relationship with his agent (Phylicia Rashad) is pure gold.

Saw the first two episodes of Luke Cage last night.

I kind of loved what I saw. The actor playing Cage seemed much more comfortable in the role and was actually charming. The villain is legit great. I love the tone they're going for, feels much different than the previous two shows.

And it's clear to me the creators are trying to resemble The Wire. It's very much chasing that mold. It's definitely not hitting that but it's evoking a lot of what I like about The Wire

After 2 eps of Luke Cage, it definitely seems like the best of the Netflix Marvel shows.  Story is pretty standard marvel tv mob stuff, but it's got great music and way more directing style than DD or JJ had.  Feeling good about this one.

Westworld ep1 was great.  Didn't know anything about the show other than it was based on a Crichton novel and didn't really know why everyone was so hyped about it, but yeah that was a pretty good start.  I especially enjoyed the old-timey musical versions of modern music like Black Hole Sun lol.

Ash v Evil Dead S2 ep1 was fun.  More of the same and the show's never been particularly great, but it's fun and there's some good Ash lines in there.

Started watching the original X-Files from s1e1. It's a fantastic first episode. Duchovny and Anderson are SO AMAZINGLY YOUNG. Young Gillian is achingly pretty. I missed the initial run of the series, joining in around s3 or so; I didn't realize that Cigarette Smoking Man is in from the first episode.

Luke Cage

Finished this up over the weekend. I really liked the first half of the show. As I mentioned, it reminded me quiet a bit of The Wire. Cottonmouth as a villain was immediately engaging in the same way Stringer Bell was engaging. It's not a perfect 1:1 obviously, but the influence is obvious to me.

Luke Cage felt like, what if Omar was bulletproof? Seeing Cage interfering with Cottonmouths criminal activity was super entertaining. Like, what is Cottonmouth gonna do?

Then we hit the midway of the show. It's a very clear and obvious pivot. Spoilers for the rest:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Mariah kills Cottonmouth. It happens right after we get some kind of character development from him. I dont think Mariah is as compelling of a villain as Cottonmouth, nor do I think the actor is very good in this role. She gets better, slightly as things go one but the vacuum left behind is never really filled by someone as compelling. And it's not just Mariah. The reveal of Diamondback was subpar as was the reveal he's Cage's brother. I really rolled my eyes when that happened. I really didn't like the fact that Diamondback was around without any connection to Cage, then coincidentally they happen to meet again. It was awkward. Also Diamondback wasn't a very compelling villain either.
[close]

Beyond those specific things, the second half of the show just felt far more "Marvel Netflix" showy. Even with the standard slump 3/4ths of the way through.

So yeah, overall it's still good but they kinda botch things in the second half.

I mean the music is fine most of the time, though it's still the same rote throwback shit AY is known for, it's just completely out of place with certain scenes. Like I'm about 10 minutes into episode 8 right now and the music sounds like some straight up scooby doo shit.

It's easy to forget that some of the best songwriters in modern contemporary music history were writing for Motown, Stax, Gold World Records etc in the 1960s. I've never heard anyone perfectly replicate that sound. Younge's take on 60s soul/pop is often egregious to me due to how slow and airless his compositions are, plus the absence of memorable singers. Sometimes he knocks it out the park but usually I'm left very frustrated by his work. I can probably count the amount of songs I like of his on one or two hands. I like that calypso track he did on Kendrick's Untitled Unmastered album; Ali Shaheed Muhammad, who worked with Younge on Luke Cage's soundtrack, co-produced it. I like his sample on that Q track I posted too.

BTW he released an electronic album a few days ago that of course is "inspired" by 60s/70s electronic and synth music. I listened to a couple tracks and gave up. Same problem.

Music is fine and fits in with the blaxploitation tone. Licensed tracks are fucking great, btw. Some of my favorite soul tracks.

I think it's a little on the nose in that regard.

I'm probably coming across as overly critical though, it's a minor flaw and more just me being a pedant than a genuine complaint. I do think it's cool how they bring in actual artists into the club and like you said the tracks they use are great. Sidenote on the music; someone on twitter pointed out that he listens to a censored version of Bring Da Ruckus, which is a nice touch. The clean version of 36 Chambers also just skips it entirely so I like to imagine that at some point Luke figured out Audacity just so he could make his own radio edit
