This modern approach of letting a player start in an action packed area has drawbacks. In RPG's you often should build up to something, start small.

heh, that is small. I fought a Pit Lord in a level 30 Skirmish and the thing would've been a raid boss in WoW.

Rift offering free weekend to returning players. Might try it out. Would also like to try out NWN. I also got into the Firefall beta and played like 20 minutes of it. I need to do more than the starting quest to give a full impression. All I can say it that it's not like PS2. Firefall is more of a traditional questing MMO with FPS gameplay.

Would like to get some time in with other games before another GW2 patch hits on Tuesday.

Some footage of ESO with commentary from Richie Proccopio. It doesn't feature any player done gameplay, but Richie was one of the press up at Zenimax's press tour and he provides a lot of info on what will and won't be in the game. He says they're looking into allowing players to become vampires and that they're aiming for something loike 16 4-man dungeons at launch.

A funny Wildstar WHAT-IS-IT summary video. I really like their housing and war castle design. Build up your own home/guild area and then battle it out with others.

Spent some time with NWN online over the weekend. I felt the game had a good D&D feel to it. The combat is fun at first, but feels sorta of herky-jerky at this point in development. I am not sure if its the animations or the fact that they decided to root players to the floor on hits. There is certainly a delay on using a dodge that they should remove. Attacks are responsive, but dodges aren't as responsive.

I only made it to level 6. Early on, its a pretty linear, quest driven game. I had like one or two quests at a time at most, and they mostly revolved around the early story. Grab quest, go to instance dungeon-like area and pound through mobs. I like the little things in dungeons you can research according to your class' specialty. It's just more of a button pressing thing, but I do enjoy looking around areas for more stuff to investigate.

It feels sorta diablo-ish at times, at least in the way mobs die and loot pops out, and the fact you take on multiple mobs. A lot like Vindictus in that manner, but the combat is more like a limited version of GW2 combat.

I criticize GW2. It's just that none of you couch-lumps play the game so you don't know what the issues are.

Also, the NWN is a beta. You play it to find bugs and areas that need improvement.

It's a F2P MMO without an ass-raping scheme like SWTOR and it's set in the Forgotten Realms, which is a thousand times better than any other fantasy setting in other F2P MMOs except for LOTRO.

Rax plays and Fatal SHOULD play. Rodi and CG play. We just did a bunch of zone bosses and a secret mini-dungeon together the other day. I'm going to be unlocking Guild Bounty Training Missions for our mini-guild soon. It was just added in this patch for small guilds.

Y'all should be playing. GW2 and Eve are the only two MMOs to still be growing without changing their business structure. It is actually the hotness right now.

Looks nice but the combat seems quite hack n slash; perhaps that's due to it being the first dungeon. Is there any strategy to boss fights beyond "kick the shit out of him." It looks similar to GW2 in terms of just being "don't stand in this circle of dmg."

Also how are the quests?

The level cap in the last beta weekend was 50 (out of 60) and I've only done a level 30-34 boss fight with a Pit Fiend. It was like Onyxia, so if a 5 man dungeon had an Onyxia-style boss fight; raids may be more complex.

The dungeons have D&D style lever puzzles and actual traps that Rogues can disarm.

Also the action is hack n slash because it's action-based kind of like Tera and Diablo.

Like in Diablo you map your main attacks to the two mouse buttons.

Q, E, and R are abilities you can map that you gain while leveling up.

1 and 2 are Daily Abilities that are basically just super moves you can unleash when the D20 icon is filled.

3, 4, 5 are for potions and 6 is your mount.

WASD is movement.

It's basically a Mario/Zelda/Wizards and Warriors in Minecraftian 3d. There's 3.5 levels in of the first world and they're working to add more. You get three hearts, find keys to open treasure chests, can buy weapons like whips and bombs. You can use bombs to blow up spots in walls to reveal secret passages. There's hiddein mini-bosses and a big boss at the end of each level. Apparently there's a huge frog boss at the end of stage 3, but I haven't been able to get to that point yet. The main point is to beat the game and collect baubles, trade the baubles for in-game items from the shopkeeper and assemble bauble bubbles to trade for awesome new weapon skins in the outside game.

I'm definitely going to roll a Guardian dude. One of my laments about WoW was that while having a shield is essential to non-DK tanking, it doesn't really matter much in terms of gameplay. I always wanted a more defensive option in terms of blocking more attacks (not a Shield Wall cd, but actually doing it yourself) and damage mitigation beyond Shield Reflect.

This could also potentially be pretty interesting in PvP

TERA's tank class has a similar block function. You press right click to throw up your shield and block attacks. It doesn't mitigate full damage and has a limit. I believe TESO will also have a "push block to block" combat using its stamina bar. And of course, Guild Wars 2's shields have skills and no passive block functionality. They operate differently for different classes though. Guardian uses a shield to knockback foes with protective bubbles and grant protection with conal shield slams. A warrior has a block stance which blocks attacks for 3 seconds, along with a shield bash that stuns. The Engineer is a mix of both of those, with a reflect shield that can knockback, and a charged shield that blocks range attacks and stuns melee foes that hit it.

Latest GW2 update notes coming in. Final Chapter/Month of F&F Living Story. New events added for the final chapter. A new limited-time dungeon is being added as well. sPVP is getting Custom Arenas and Spectator Mode, along with the game supposedly getting a big sweeping balance change.

The sPVP game needs more than what they've listed for custom arenas and it needs more than spectator mode. It needs a gametype people care more about and it needs the trait overhaul the entire game needs. The meta is stale because of Conquest and lackluster traits. Custom Arenas should help a bit though. People can weed out the maps they don't want. Saddened to see we can't change the rules on the maps with Custom Arenas though. That's what I was looking forward to with customization.

There's something about being a "contributor/supporter" that these people love, I just don't get it. Same with the people who worked over a grand for Path Of Exile (including Yoshi on GAF, who doesn't even play the game anymore because he's waiting for it to be finished lmao). I'd pay $10-25 just to help the developers out, if it's a worthwhile f2p game that I've put lots of time in or if the game has a lot of potential (like Grim Dawn). But I'd never consider more than that.

I haven't spent much on F2P games. It's really a minor percentage of the players that fund these games, but man do they spend a lot. If you have no self-control then I would not advise messing with a F2P game. The premise of immediate rewards for money turns people into shopaholics.

The only thing I find odd is all the outrage towards item shops as though sub-fee games aren't manipulative as fuck as well. People will wig out if a game lets them reduce the grind if they pay $10 but gladly plod along through a grind that will never go away so the company can keep you subbed for $10-$15 a month until the end of time. In the bad F2P models, its the same shit as subs but with the cost moved around. But for some reason people think sub games are somehow more honest and holy even though many have been practicing the same concept in a different way for years upon years. It's just indoctrination.

The good F2P and B2P models really don't restrict much at all, but a small percentage of people still unload tons of money into them. I've spent $20 extra of real money on Guild Wars 2 since launch. I've used about $14 of that money so far. In total, I've probably bought $30-40 worth of stuff on the gem store. I've bought more with in-game gold conversion than I have via real money. On the other hand, I know people who have spent $70 of real money just to quickly buy a Commander tag. I've known people who have plunked down hundreds of dollars into gems to buy everything and try it out. The black lion chest chance system is like gambling for these people. They buy keys and hope random RNG gives them a fancy new skin. Some of them do it because they are twitch streamers or youtubers who use the game to make advertising money via their playing of the game, but others are just folk with no self-control.

Path of Exile doesn't restrict anything really. I can't really think of anything important to playing the game that involves spending money, but you still have nuts like yoshi throwing money at it.

Just about level 20 in Neverwinter. It shits all over GW2 so much you really feel sorry for ArenaNet trying to charge people $60 for their game.
