Regardless of who wins, I think the spread this year just shows how great 2009 was. I know 2010 has some major hitters but I still think 2009 will be tough to beat. 2009 feels like the 2004, 1998 quality year all over again.

The same could be said of Fallout 3 the previous year! A lot of people like reaaaaaally like Bethseda and Bioware games.

GOTY as a concept is sort of meaningless. Especially if a community has diverse taste. Whatever wins is cool. My major personal thought is that this was the year of XBLA, PSN, type services. I bought fewer $60 games and more $15 dollar or less games that I enjoyed a whole lot especially when you take bang for buck into account.

I'm a fan of the Halo series but like I've said before Halo ODST was nothing but a scam. The campaign length was short like MW 2 so it gets no bonus points there. It had that pointless awful hub city concept. And very little new at all in and the map packs from a 2 year old game to try to cheat the perceived value.

Reach might/should turn out to be a game worth praising since it has had the full dev cycle put in, but ODST was just not worth $60.

Sell it for $30 and I might have a different impression but not at $60.

No, I hate Killzone 2, but it's definitely a better game than ODTS. Killzone 2 at least looks like a 2009 game and isn't an overpriced add-on.

My GOTY list had two retail games. Everything else was DD. I think that 2009 will partially be remembered as a year when DD became more fleshed out and respected in general. Trials HD, Shadow Complex and Torchlight are all incredible games that could have never flourished as $60 retail titles in today's market.

It'll still sell millions, though. The Halo crowd will buy anything with Halo on attached. No matter the quality or value.

You can always make a little extra money trading on the name and brand of a popular and well respected series. See Final Fantasy spin-off's. Zelda Spin-Off's, Mario Spin-Off's, Or Treyarch... or lots of things really.

Well, their exclusives sold, whether they deserved to or not. I guess that makes them "killer titles." I don't know what in the hell is really going on with PS3 owners these days, but for some reason they just do not like to buy exclusive games. I can understand Infamous, even KZ2, but everything about Uncharted 2 makes it look designed to sell, lots.

I got ODST for like $30 or $40 on Amazon and enjoyed it. Firefight was also fun for two or three times I could play it because it's friends only multiplayer for some reason.

I don't think anyone can legitimately claim they don't like something they spend fifty hours playing.

As I said at the time, Dragon Age is compelling, but it's not very good. It's the gaming equivalent of empty calories.

I glanced at the gaf thread for that 1up thing and apparently they factor in sales and all that. I guess that's the excuse for why it's so distinguished mentally-challenged. PS2 higher than PSP still doesn't make sense, but they're probably putting a lot of weight on the Go failure rather than the many great games that came out this for it. So, yeah, distinguished mentally-challenged list.

Metroidvania style progression
Respects the property its based on
Variety of gameplay styles (from exploration, to brawling, to stealth, to puzzle solving), most executed pretty well
Excellent voice acting

It gets a bit weak towards the end - the Killer Croc section was annoying and too long, and the end boss was very anti-climatic, but the rest of the game is great.
