because namco repeatedly puts content hidden within a game - like darth vader or yoda - and sells it. they'd also do poor localization jobs of say, Tales games, and remove content.

There's also Ace Combat 6, and pretty much all of that game's content is dlc. But if you bought the game via dlc, it'd cost more than if you bought it via disc.

To be fair he is talking about the expanded universe but honestly I've always thought the actual storytelling within the Halo games themselves is fairly poor. What does it really matter if your expanded universe is massive if the actual storytelling is poor. (See the last three Star Wars movies as a perfect example)

I barely understood a lick of Halo 2 and 3 without reading some FAQ.
