I think Eel would be quite interested in Alter Ego, which focuses on Golden and Silver age topics and creators.

i subscribed to AE for a long time, didn't know they still published it

You have a number of options. You can agree that girl-Robins are hawt. You can agree that there have been too many Robins. Or you can kill one by calling a special phone number.

I went back and read it and while it holds up for the most part, it's definitely an artifact of the 90s.  I kind of wish we had that Gaiman around instead of our current model.

what I found interesting when rereading it is that the arcs I liked and the arcs I disliked had almost done a complete 180 from when I was a teenager

Ultimate (universe) Spider-Man was killed off...not the real one.

They killed a shit-ton of Ultimate characters off, actually.  Wolverine was killed and replaced with his teenage bastard son (not Daken), for instance.

Meanwhile in the regular Marvel universe, the CLONE SAGA resurfaces, as Kaine came back, was "cured" of disfigurements, and is now the new Scarlet Spider.

that's a lot of comics in on volume

if it's anything like teen titans omnibus it will be too difficult to actually read the middle issues

i'd rather have each series in its own individual omnibus format

It's DOUBLE the length of the TT omnibus, over 1500 pages. The closest thing I have to it is the Simonson Thor book, which is 1100. It's still readable but only in the lighter-than-kettlebells-i-suppose sort of way. This thing will be fucking insane. They should really put it in two volumes in a slipcase or something. (3 would make sense too obvs)

Good idea. How does that work? You place the order for its current price, and if it goes up once it's on sale, it doesn't affect what you've already paid?

Can't say I'm surprised
Quote

The comics that DC will cancel, effective in April, are “Blackhawks,” “O.M.A.C.”, “Men of War,” and “Hawk and Dove,” as well as “Mister Terrific” and “Static Shock,” which are among the rare mainstream titles to focus on African-American heroes.

Among the series that it will introduce (or reintroduce) in May is “Batman Incorporated,” written by the popular comics author Grant Morrison and illustrated by Chris Burnham, in which the alter ego of Bruce Wayne deals with worldwide crises; DC was publishing a similar series before it began its company-wide makeover, called “The New 52,” at the end of the summer.

Other new titles include “Dial H,” written by the science-fiction and fantasy novelist China Miéville, and which DC described in a news release as “a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.” The publisher will also start series called “Earth 2″ and “Worlds’ Finest,” set in a parallel reality; as well as “G. I. Combat” and “The Ravagers,” about a group of teenage heroes.

I LOVE the Dial H for HERO concept and always have.  I'm very curious to see China's take on the while thing

LOL at those cancellations.  I'd be happy about Hawk and Dove, but Rob is being put on Deathstroke instead.

Also LOLOLOL at them bringing BACK "Earth 2" stuff after all the nonsense they did to remove parallel universes.

Know what would be awesome?  If Earth 2 was the DC Universe before the reset.  :p

On the Marvel side of things, Wolverine And The X-Men #4 re-introduces X-Force to some of the X-Men.  Wolverine continuously mentions that he is now a teacher by day, assassin by night.  The whole point of X-Force was to keep everything hidden.  Even worse, whereas when the team was exposed previously, the X-Men were disgusted, but now they're just like "well I don't like it, buuuuut...."  ::)

Can't help but be curious - the silver age stuff was corny beyond words but still kinda fun. I seriously doubt he will be using characters designed by 8yr old fans though :lol

Did you read his Hellblazer stuff? No-one seemed very enthused but it seems a hell of a lot better fit for him than Dial H.

I'm still on both Animal Man and Swamp Thing - Travel Foreman's art on Animal Man genuinely creeps me the fuck out. Love it.

OK, some very accessible non-Marvel / DC recommendations (including Vertigo and Icon here though). Unlikely anyone would like ALL of these but any comic reader will likely find something they like. All are ongoing except for Severed (7 issue mini i think). Godland is ending in a couple of issues but it's so long and so good that you should get on board before it ends.

Locke & Key
Chew
Scalped
Hellboy
BPRD
The Boys
Walking Dead
Invincible
Scalped
The Unwritten
Criminal // Fatale // whatever Brubaker & Philips are working on currently
Casanova
Godland
Irredeemable
Blue Estate
Severed
The Sixth Gun
Atomic Robo
Sweet Tooth
Witch Doctor

Plus there are always quality OGNs coming out...if you were so inclined you could read nothing but new OGNs every month. Not to mention collections and reprints of classic stuff. Really, your money and time is better spent avoiding Marvel/DC continuity and just looking for quality comics wherever they may be. Following Marvel / DC exclusively is like confining your listening to Top 40 radio.

I like Morning Glories; I'd add it to your list

Let me know when Godland actually finishes, I have always been curious as a Kirby fann

Finally, sell me on Atomic Robo... is it comedy? action? action-comedy?

yeah, get the Hellboy Library editions and the BPRD Plague of Frogs hardcovers. ~$35 for the former and ~$23 for the latter. The Mignola stuff is hundreds of pages of art that you could just cut out and plaster your house with.  Complete the decor with a few pentangle throw rugs and some dripping candles!

Godland is 2 issues away from finishing, which means only about another 2 years to go. But it's not like the story is particularly coherent. It's a moment-to-moment thing, a vibe, a wave that you ride, a door that you open in your brain!

Atomic Robo is basically science Hellboy played for laughs. It's the Saturday action serial to Hellboy's Hammer House of Horror. It's very light but clever and expertly paced. The different volumes do that Planetary genre-hopping thing too (as they're set in different eras, the titular Robo being quite old). I'm divided on the art - it has its moments, some of the characters are very expressive...but it's overall pretty bland and he really cheats on backgrounds etc. The script and characterizations are much more of a draw for me.
