I only know Anarky from the Red Robin series where the old Anarky was a good guy but comatose and the new Anarky was straight up crazyville evil. Oh and there was something about a villain internet they had to fight in...

I think I read some interview where they said they were setting up Anarky as the major foil for Batman in the series, so that's cool.

comixology is having a huge Top Shelf sale
Here's what I have read and liked

Box Office Poison - slice of life book about young people in nyc.  i really liked this, but i don't recall it having any sort of overarching story, just some people falling into and out of love $4

Essex County - the book that put Jeff Lemire on the map.  collection of three free standing stories which take place in rural Canada.  I loved these. $4

From Hell - Alan Moore's Jack the Ripper comic. Essential reading. $4

Infinite Kung-Fu - crazy action comics. $4

Underwater Welder - kind of a twilight zone ish tale about a guy who doesn't deal with family related stress very well.  very good.  $4

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen  20th Century.  3 books, $3 a pop.

Lovely Horrible Stuff - Eddie Campbell talks about money and its affect on society and its history. $3

Three Fingers - a fake documentary in comics form about cartoon characters in the 30s.  very dark. kind of a one note joke, but enjoyable enough for $2

New Floppies.

Batman 66 is out in physical format, but I still advocate just getting it on Comixology for the almost motion comic style of reading.  It's good, fun comics.

Red Sonja, I have no love for Red Sonja as a character so I don't have any thoughts of the character other than "female Conan."  Despite the hate / hate relationship I have w/ The Movement, I'm still a fan of Gail Simone, so I decided to check it out.  It's good sword n sorcery comics.  Violent and action packed.  I'll check out at least the first arc.

Mad Magazine #1.  DC added the first 24 issues of Mad to Comixology using the cleaned up scans which make up the Mad Archives.  They're $2 a pop w/ the first issue being free.  I've read this issue so many times in my life but this is the first time it's really looked this clean to me.  It may be fine in the archives, but those are stupid expensive.

That would be great but I think the lowest they do is $.99.

At the suggestion of one of the old fogey comics blogs I follow I bought the Superman Phantom Zone trade and guys, it is nuts.

http://www.amazon.com/Superman-Phantom-Zone-Graphic-Novels/dp/1401240518

Written by Steve Gerber (Howard the Duck) and drawn by Gene Colan (Tomb of Dracula) it is Superman versus the worst criminals of Krypton  in a mini-series that sees Superman essentially go through HP Lovecraft's The Dreamlands.  I could post the craziest images from the books, but it would pretty much literally be the entire book.

There are things in there that I you wouldn't believe belong in a mainstream DC publication of the 80s.  Like the naked Kryptonian woman who seducs an earth man only to cuddle him so hard his spine snaps.  or hal jordan straight up getting his ass kicked in two panels, or the extended fight sequence where Zod and his minions beat holy hell out of Supergirl almost killing her, or the aforementioned superman in the dreamlands versus both psychological monsters made real or lovecraftian monsters, or basically death disembowling supes, or superman literally melting.  each page for the 3rd and 4th issues is pretty much crazier than the rest.

absolutely recommended if only because of how insane it is.

as it's 80s Gerber, it's really talky, like captions in every panel and the non-psychedelic art can be kind of rough at times, but it's some of the strangest shit i've read in a flagship title pre-dating morrison's run on anything.

stuff like this actually happens in that issue and it's not the craziest stuff in that issue.

have watched 3 episodes of new cartoon series Avengers Assemble and like most other properties it's taking a very movie centric take on the team.  Cap, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor are aided by new full timer Falcon, dressed in comics style armor rather than the movie style images (red and white rather than black uniform like armor).

iron man isn't quite going for the RDJ interpretation.  it sounds like marty mcfly to me which kind of jars me out of it.  there's an overarching plot where the red skull in iron man's armor is now iron skull and he's trying to put together some anti-avengers w/ MODOK.  The first two episodes are getting the avengers back together having been "fired" by iron man in the previous time.  it's the introduction of iron skull and modok and skull's plan to get everyone together.  black widow is involved but rather as an acillary member of the avnegers and is handled quite well.

the third episode i saw (am watching now) is basically the Fear Itself story line.  Doom / Hammer / World Destroying Serpent etc.

The editing is the star here as action scenes will feature split screen, aspect ratio changes etc to give a comic book style presentation.

weirdly Falcon has gotten more / better screen time than Captain America.  He's presented as kind of an everyman in a fantastical situation (which is a very good choice).  Hawkeye is kind of a joker / nerd who laments the loss of his comic books after the original avengers mansion is destroyed.

Finally had some time to read Glory Vol 2 and Prophet Vol 2.

Glory Vol 2 tries to wrap up what was obviously going to be a longer storyline in just a few issues due to impending cancellation.  This kind of freedom gave the title the ability to be super creative and kind of go off the rails.  I'm still processing it, but it's good comics with some actual trope subversion and a very nice cap off that sees the series out on a somewhat uplifting note even if literally everyone you've come to know over the past 12 issues was murdered horribly.

Prophet Vol 2.  It's getting more and more elements from the old Youngblood universe in it and I don't know how i feel about that.  This volume is about a Prophet clone who is gathering up the members of Youngblood.  It's still good space pew pew metal hurlant sans boobs though, don't get me wrong.

finished Promethea last night and it is PLAINLY Alan Moore using comics to talk to you about Hermetic Magical Traditions.  That's it.  31 issues of it with a 1 issue wrap up / Cliff Notes.

Absolutely beautiful and ambitious but jesus christ I found it absolutely boring.  Of course I grew up weird so I know most of the stuff it goes over so there's nothing really new or exciting here for me.  People not steeped in occultism may find the cosmology that he hacks out here interesting but the methodology was totally Alan Moore in "I'm going to lecture you" mode.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way.  Unfortunately our library system doesn't have collections of Tom Strong or his other ABC works which is a shame, because I never read those past the first trade.  I think the only series I actually read as it was published was Top 10.

In other news, I read a blog post talking about how cool Superior Spider-man is and it is indeed awesome.  Doc Octopus in Peter Parker's body trying to do good and just going about it the absolute wrong way.  He's trying to do good but he is so evil at heart he just does it in horrible ways.  Great stuff.  Will totally be retconned and removed from canon because we have a new movie coming out, but it's a fun ride while it lasts.

Yeah, Promethea also left me cold. It is smart and gorgeous, and just not much fun to read. I think I have 10 issues or so.

Neonomicon was a good read. Some of it was genuinely unsettling.

I've had Lost Girls since it came out, and can't be bothered to read it.

Rereading Top Ten and 49ers was really great though.

the newest issue of Batman 66 is not optimized for guided view reading, though it's published at screen ratio, so you can maximize it and it will fill your monitor screen nicely.  This issue deals with The Penguin dragging an iceberg to Gotham Harbor and having it declared a sovereign nation by the UN (shades of lex luthor's Superman Returns plot).  There's a final page reveal that sets up part two, but if you think about it real hard you can probably guess what it is based on the previous sentence.

Lazarus issue 2 deals mostly with the family dynamics and doesn't advance the plot too much.  Still good but it's mostly talky after last issue's mostly action tale. It's Rucka so it's good reading.  The art is mostly complimentary, though it leans a bit too much on "the future is brown" trope.

Speaking of Rucka, to celebrate the wolverine movie opening, Comixology has a ton of Wolverine issues on sale.  I highly recommend Rucka and Millar's run.  Rucka takes a kind of contemplative small story look at the character while Millar says "fuck that let's have him fight the marvel universe" with Enemy of the State.  They're very different tellings of Wolverine, but both are good.  If you're low on cash, I'd say just buy Enemy of the State storyline and the first 6 of Rucka's run.

Yeah Lazarus seems pretty solid so far and actually moving pretty steadily. Obviously something is up with Forever, but issue 2 was dropping some pretty big hints already.

I never read Gotham Central(something I'll change soon thanks to this and Fatale) and so I'm not use to this artist. It's not bad and probably fits the book, but I do wish it was a bit more vibrant.

I just finished Neonomicon.

Fantastic read and great use of the Cthulhu mythos, one of my favorite horror comics of all time. I also just found out it's a sequel to Alan Moore's The Courtyard, which I'm obviously going to check out soon.

Ooh, I didn't know about The Courtyard. I'll grab that.

So the first trade collection of FF makes no sense because it starts with issue number 4.  I pre-ordered it months ago and just assumed it would start at the beginning of the series.  In reading it, I realized my error.  Today I went looking to see if the other issues were collected elsewhere and I had just missed them, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

It's just a really weird marketing move.

I had to go back and pick up the previous issues from Comixology this morning to try to come to grips with what is going on in the series.

Read the 1st issue of Collider. Seems solid, the art reminds of the art of Ming Doyole's in Mara. Physics FBI Agents is kind of a cool idea.

The Wake Issue 3 basically had kicked the story into high gear. The Wake seems really crazy and I'm really excited to see where this goes. The art is also amazing.

And happily the Fantomex crap is over in Uncanny X-Force. Just a really stupid and creepy little arch.

Yeah I liked Collider as well.  The Wake is like The Abyss as directed by Aliens James Cameron.  I was a little concerned when the reveal was "mermen.  evil mermen." but it's been pretty cool so far.

X-Men issue 3 was pretty good.  It's improved, or I've gotten used to the comic, with each successive issue.  I like this Kitty Pryde a lot.  Smart and confident and in charge.

I grabbed last week's Hawkeye Annual, and guys, Hawkeye is just consistently the best thing I'm reading.  It's just stupid good.

Fearless Defenders has taken an interesting turn.  I like the comic and it's a shame that it's not going to stick around.

Thanks to a recent comixology sale I'm currently going through the X-23 Series and it's basically Teen Wolverine searches for her past.  I've heard it praised quite a bit so I snagged the entire run.  So far it's competent but not mind blowing.

I liked X-men Issue 3 if only because it features a cast I like. It was also nice to see some use of those background young-X-men. I'm also kind of happy Prime Sentinel or whatever her name was is back. I really didn't expect that from this arch.

I'm not sure I like this Sublime since all I remember from New X-men is him being extremely slimy. Though I kind of hope he sticks around to have some sort of "is he gonna betray them or not" tension. And hey he seems to have something going on with Rachel Grey and that's kind of cool.

I don't know seems like a good book. I've dropped Wolverine and the X-men because it's not what I want from an X-men comic. Cable and X-Force has kind of been average. Uncanny X-Force has just been kind of lame recently. All New X-men is slow as fuck, which is a shame because you just know it can and maybe will lead to some cool things. Really the best xbooks are this and Uncanny if you ask me.

what in the holy hell is happening at DC?

Huge ass article about DC

http://whenwillthehurtingstop.blogspot.com/2013/08/sir.html

So it turns out that the mysterious woman who was inserted into background shots of every Nu52 first issue is actually Pandora - the real, mythical Pandora, of Greek myth, who opened Pandora's Box and allowed evil to enter the world. She's wandered the Earth for thousands of years, cursed as punishment for her transgressions. She is one of the story's titular "trinity of sin" - the other two being the Phantom Stranger and the Question. The former has been completely revamped, given a confirmed origin as Judas Iscariot, and given a secret identity, a human family, and a talking dog sidekick; the latter has been revamped into a mysterious amnesiac ancient evildoer forced to live forever, walking the earth in search of the question (get it?) that will reveal his identity. It should not need to be said that both of these revamps commit unforgivable violence against the characters' original intent. Since the first cryptic announcement of the Trinity War, fans assumed that the trinity in question would be the familiar trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. I must give them some points for defying expectations, but in this instance the expectations would certainly have made more sense than what we got.

Oddly enough for a crossover involving two of the best-selling comic books in the country, the story actually picks up on a few plotlines from third-string titles like Team 7 (already canceled) and Phantom Stranger (not yet canceled but sells like shit, despite the fact that - notwithstanding the awful creative choices made in rebooting the character, J.M. DeMatteis makes the book at least somewhat readable). They've been very methodical in terms of laying the groundwork for this story. The plot begins when Pandora discovers that if a truly good soul reopens Pandora's Box, then the evils that were once trapped in the box will be reimprisoned once again. Like most sane people she assumes Superman to be genuinely good, but of course since this is the Nu52 he's not, so instead of opening the box and solving all evil it instead fucks with his head enough that he murders Doctor Light by blowing his head off with heat vision. Which is exactly what I want to see in a Superman story: Superman failing the moral paragon test and being tricked into killing people. The murder happens during the Justice League's big fight with the Justice League of America (controlled by the unappealing, amoral Nu52 Amanda Waller) in Kahndaq, after intercepting Shazam who has come to the country to spread Black Adam's ashes after killing him last month. After the fight in which Superman kills Dr. Light, the two teams come together in order to try to solve the problem with Superman. The teams split down the middle regarding the plan of action while Wonder Woman seeks out the Justice League Dark for their help, at which point Constantine tries to trick Wonder Woman into becoming his slave. (Which is just a fantastic thing to do, really.) But meanwhile the real villain is a character who (apparently) survived the destruction of the Flashpoint universe and, for some reason, is trying to rule the world by capturing Pandora. Or something along those lines, admittedly the story is still only halfway done. Phew.

Put all that shit aside.  The storyline is just the first big crossover arc for all three Justice League Teams (should have been four, I guess, but DC wants to forget that one book already failed and was canceled, then sort of-kind of resurrected again as JLA) and it actually does a decent job of bringing some of the stuff that started when the New 52 began full-circle.  The villain (or villains?) you're talking about is apparently
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Owl-Man and the Earth he came from is still there in some form or another
[close]
.  So they've already got a convoluted mess of a universe going on again with at least three different DC earths after what, a year and a half since they rebooted everything AGAIN?   :lol

 :lol

On a somewhat-related topic, my iPhone got all fucked up yesterday and I ended up having to wipe the whole thing and start all over without a backup to get it working again.  I lost 11 GB of comics that I had stored on there and have been redownloading everything.  It actually feels kind of good looking at a bunch of Marvel and DC series and realizing I'm never going to read them -because they're crap- and just skipping over them now.  It's nice having a lot of free space available on my phone again.   :P

Re-reading Darwyn Cooke's Parker adaptations.

So good. Every page should be framed.

Hey kids, Comics!

Sheltered #2. I like this comic.  the first issue we got the shocking act, and now we start to get some of the reasons for that act with some dissent showing up in the members of the new community while setting up a confrontation in the next issue.  I'm very intrigued by this comic.  I think I know where it's going, but I will admit that I could be totally wrong.  I like the art and I like the visual storytelling.  It's very clear what is happening and why.

Movement #4. I hate myself and I want to die.  I am buying this in an effort to show that people would like diversity in their comics, but jesus christ this is just not very good. It's horrible agitprop and it conveys messages with which I agree but it does so in this kind of base lowest common denominator way.  A+ for the cast but ugh for everything else.

Sidekicks #1. Rick Veitch's BratPack light for most of the issue.  Teen Side kick turned 20+ side kick who had one moment of glory is in a downward spiral....and then his mentor is assassinated right in front of him.  So now the Sidekick has to find a source of income and a purpose in life.  Sure he has super powers, but they're not great and he's not that good at heroing, so the city has to find a new hero to watch over everything.  Straczynski sets up an interesting situation then does a final page reveal that kind of irked me. It's a cheap hook and instantly makes the book less interesting to me which is a shame because what came before that stuff was pretty grand.

Trillium #1. I liked Underwater Wielder, loved Essex County, and was ultimately disappointed with Sweet Tooth, and straight up loathe his Nu52 DC comics stuff, but I was kind of looking forward to this and it is pretty grand.  If you buy this, buy a physical copy because it's a flip book.  The story is told through one perspective on one side of the book, and another on the flip and they meet in the middle of the book.  It's a cool way to tell the story and one that will not be properly conveyed through Comixology.

Satellite Sam #2.  I haven't finished this one because i found it really difficult to read digitally.  I will probably buy these in physical form from now on.

I totally forgot to buy Batman 66, so I have no idea if that's any good or not.

I read The Bunker #1, and it seems like it could be a really good series. A group of kids find a LOST-esque underground bunker. There's no dicking around though, they pop that thing open and climb right in almost in the first panel. It seems like they're giving the whole thing away from the very beginning, but it's clear there's more layers to what's going on than there initially seems. Shit's gonna go down.

what in the holy hell is happening at DC?

Phew.

You'd think this kind of stuff would make me not wanna read DC, but it doesn't. Actually I feel like I should try to get caught up now.

Also finally wrapped Journey Into Mystery w/ Teen Loki.  This book is a lot of fun.  It's kind of like Superior Spider-Man where you watch a villain use their villainous gifts to go straight, in the case of Loki, it's very similar to Lucifer where he is just trying to set up a million different scenarios and carry them through with just his words alone.  Very fun fantasy comics and highly recommended.  I was able to jump in with no knowledge of Fear Itself, the cross over from which it sprung.

Speaking of Thor, I was able to find the straczynski thor trades for cheap on amazon (around $10 a volume, so about half price in some instances) so i grabbed them.  when i finish them i'll finally be able to read the kieron gellon thor trade i picked up a while ago that made 0 sense as it was trying to wrap up Straczynski's story lines.

This interest in Thor is 100% coming from my enjoyment of Journey, otherwise I just wouldn't really care.

Gettin' back into DC.

Animal Man #1-12
Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE#1-12
Swamp Thing #1-12

Decided to read these three together because they all intersect during the Rotworld crossover, which is the point I'm up to. They've all been pretty solid, but I think I like Frankenstein the most (so of course that's the one that's already been cancelled). It kinda feels like DC Presents Hellboy, but it's not bad though.

OMAC #1-8

Decided to knock this one out since it only ran 8 issues, and I'm not surprised this got cancelled. It felt like they were throwing everything at the wall to see what stuck, and not very much of it did. Right out of the gate, it's throwing a ton of continuity baggage at you; Cadmus, Dubbilex, Checkmate, Max Lord, Brother Eye, etc. It's all a crazy mix of original Jack Kirby OMAC & The OMAC Project/Infinite Crisis. But despite that, the story's just not very interesting at all, and their idea of making it more interesting is to just have OMAC fight random other characters for no reason. Max Lord "pulled some strings" and now Superman shows up to fight OMAC for bit. Then he leaves. Then Frankenstein shows up for a tussle. But OMAC always teleports away before either side "wins" so it's pretty pointless.

I think Swamp Thing and Animal Man are the only two non BatFam related books I have any interest in continuing at this point.

Oh, and I actually liked The Bunker.  I'm curious as to how long it will actually last because it seems like 20th Century Boys in reverse.

The  Secret Service is worth reading if only to see how utterly primed it is for the big screen (cinema). The Mark Hamill escape bit is quite funny too.

Oh yeah, I agree with Promethea, it looks loverly, but is really Moore just spunking out his thoughts and favourite esoterica after the first bit, which I really really liked. The rock concert bit, and the first I am Promethea bit.

Hey, kids!  Comics!

It was kind of a slow week this week, so i went back and nabbed a few things which had eluded me last week.

Superior Foes of Spider-man #2.  Excellent little comedy series about incompetent villains punching way above their weight class.  fun story, fun miserable little characters and very expressive art really sell this.  a lot of fun to read

Batman '66 #7 -  The Joker!  Kind of weird because this series also introduces Harley Quinn 66 (or at least her civilian identity).  the joker is drawn with his mustache intact!

ghosted #2 - seems a little grim n gritty right now with the out right murder of someone who COULD be a problem for their heist but is not actually a problem.  we've also had an injection of cosmic horror.  here's hoping this doesn't devolve into a lovecraft pastiche.  also this has gone from mini-series to ongoing which is kind of disconcerting, honestly.

red sonja #2 - this is why i like Gail Simone.  excessively violent and excessively fun.  far better than her message comix.

fearless defenders #8 -this is kind of like a more serious Agents of H.A.T.E. which is reinforced by the addition of Elsa Bloodstone to the mix.  Also this comic has shot up a dollar per issue.  I don't know if i will keep reading it monthly or just wait for the trades.

Back Issue Bin
I've just finished Straczynski's Thor Run and I liked it.  I never really cared about Thor until I read Journey Into Mystery which was all about Kid Loki and Thor's side characters.  I grabbed the complete Kieron Gillen Thor trade for $8 from Amazon but it started in media res (all the Asgardians living in Latveria, Thor exiled) so i had no idea what was actually happening.  So I started grabbing JMS's books on the cheap and reading those to fill in the blanks.

There's some stuff which is really problematic (to say the least) like the big nordic god beating up on swaths of africans aided by german and french mercenaries.  Seems...uh ignorant of racist imagery and colonialism as a historical force in perceptions of africa as a continent and africans as people.  also I don't like Loki in this book.  I prefer trickster god who manipulates others, but this guy is just basically EEEEEEEVIL.  Seems overly cartoonish.
