Shipped vs sold - nobody cares.

Glad to hear Bayonetta is selling well, bodes well for a sequel.

Well I hope you're kidding.  Unsold copies in the retail channel aren't a good thing.

Not kidding, don't care.

See this is the part where you're mistaken.  This is why the whole shipped vs. sold argument is bought about.  Stoney Mason had a good point that the decent japanese sales might convince sega to publish a sequel.  Yet shipping 1.1 million copies worldwide means alot of product is just sitting there on the shelf.  This is dumb thing to discuss until we get the top 20 though.

It's so weird to see people somehow still hoping against hope that the PS3 is going to catch up to the 360. This generation has been decided.  It's BEEN decided for at least the last two years.

Except for the fact that game budgets require releases on BOTH platforms now to make it viable. A slight lead means nothing.

For forum-dwellers, it means everything.

I played the japanese PS3 demo and felt the game was about flash more than substance. Like if Devil May Cry had constant Maxim-ish nudity and even more scripted attack sequences.
Nothing inherently WRONG with it, but after the second time she lost all her clothes and did the exact same maneuver I got bored. Kinda like Gungrave.
I didn't feel like I had CONTROL of what was going on, rather it was presented TO me.
Stop playing games at all...sorry

Sony's Spin "PlayStation was the only company to see consumers in three territories (UK, US and Japan) spending 15% more on PS3 software in 2009 than they did in 2008 – this is while the category as a whole experienced a 9% decline in software sales. We’re nowhere near slowing down in the new year as today’s NPD numbers show a 36% sales increase on PS3 hardware when compared to last January."

You would think they would have another game in the top 10.

Didn't Madworld bomb critically as well as saleswise?  Whereas Bayonetta, if nothing else, has been critically acclaimed across the board by both reviewers and players.

Bayonetta's sold over a million copies worldwide, don't think it qualifies as a bomb.

Those are shipped numbers.

Do you understand who pays the publisher for the game dude? It's not you and me.

Seriously guys, its important what the sell through is.  You can like a game and understand it didn't perform well in the marketplace.

Depends.  If you can convince stores your game is gonna be BIG and ship them x amount of copies, you win.
The problem is that next time around they might not be fooled so easily.

While it's sad, for the most part the game market is not decided by how many people actually buy a game but by how well a company markets a game to stores.

Well, I liked madworld.  It was like a good No More Heroes.  But as a sales cigarillo I'm on the lookout for easy parallels between products.  Both have weird art styles, made by the same company, published by the same company, similar genre, decent advertising for both as far as I'm concerned.  So its a better barometer for the market trends on the different platforms.

So sega approaches retailers with Yakuza 3 or some other game now.  What is the retailer going to consider in this scenario?

It doesnt really matter though because retailers return the game if they cant sell it getting some of the money back or atleast thats how it works in Australia.

I want to say it did around 350kish in Japan between the two platforms.  Don't peg me on that though.  Getting numbers out of Europe is very very very rare outside of some pr statements.

It sold decently well in Japan relative to that market size and who knows in Europe (although I wouldn't guess it sold overly well). But let's not kid ourselves. The US is the dominant and largest market so it matters a great deal how it performs here.

Just be happy we got a good game whether a sequel is coming or not and consider the sequel "extra" if it does come.

I wonder how it did in Asia...I know the Asian version came out some time after the Japanese version.

The European version was also the only one to have a limited edition with a replica of one of Bayonetta's guns, so maybe they had good expectations for sales there?

The Bayonetta intro video or whatever was the dumbest thing I think I have ever seen. Would never consider playing the game.

Mass Effect 2, on the other hand, is still next on the list. Actually, the Dragon Age expansion will probably get played first. So next next.

Gatchaman = Battle of the Planets = G-Force

Old show that aired on American TV in the '80s.  It's the only Tatsunoko show featured in the game that I imagine anyone in the US knows.

Group think bubble creates unrealistic expectations. And then expresses surprise when the real world intrudes.

Its a darn good game imo from the little bit I've played. But all the things that are cool in it that attract the hardcore also works towards repelling the mainstream. A movie like that wouldn't do big box office so why would people expect a videogame using that same material to.

I also didn't realize Bombanettabore was so butthurt about any slights about the game.

The gameplay is good enough (though it isn't for me after renting it) but everything else about the game is designed to keep it away from the registers.

I thought DMC fans would buy it especially after seeing all the great reviews, but I guess I was wrong.

Game has a 90% on Metacritic, pretty much every review I read RAVED about it, I figured it would do at least a bit better than it did.

It's embarrassing that shit like Darksiders ranked higher than Bayonetta, that's for sure.

Doesn't matter.  At the end of the day, Bayonetta is still the Action Game of the Generation. :smug
