Yeah, but the X360 version looks like a first generation Ps2 title. While the Ps3 version looks like a Ps2 game from 2006/2007.

Code: [Select]
Category | 360        | PS3

Discs | 3 (DVD)*  | 1 (BD)
Resolution | 576p**    | 720p
Audio | Compressed Only | Both Compressed and Lossless
FMV*** | 576p (BINK) | 1080p (AVC)

*Xbox 360 optional install, like other 360 games (about 18GB for this game).
**Scaled to 720p
*** 360 version missing shadowing and textures
****FMV's are 1080p for PS3, and pre-rendered cut-scenes are both 720p

You can't really blame Square. MS is using last-gen media aka DVD's.
Compression happens when you try to push that amount of data into such dated storage technology.

how the hell can CG movies looks so bad :lol

:lol Square :lol

That is a movie, but not " real CG"...pre-recorded in engine stuff
"Real CG" also looks that bad, depending on the scene...bad=compressed macroblocking fest

FF13 has two video types
-prerecorded in-engine stuff...for some more demanding scenes
-pure CG

According to Square,if i remember well

CG-3 hours
In engine videos-6hr

you can definitely blame square for the video compression. they could have easily used a better codec and still managed to fit on 3 dvds.

they simply used bink because any idiot can use it.

anywayz remember what the game was suppose to look like?

That's pretty ridiculous.  If you pick any game apart, you'll start to notice things like this.  The game looks phenomenal...but that's not where the problems lie.

The highest quality models look pretty insane, I thought...

FFXIII takes brave risks with the series’ foundations, but they ultimately create trembling fractures throughout the entire edifice, that robust battle system unable to support the weight of an entire world

This is so true...

Quote
It’s a significant prop to a story that has moments of poignancy and a few good characters, but ultimately falls flat. This is such a well-realised world that to have it inhabited by Final Fantasy clichés is especially disappointing.

Hope (really) is a kid tormented by the death of his mother

. Vanille’s an over-sexualised nonentity. Sazh is a convincing argument against Danny Glover and Lionel Richie ever again being combined into a single character. The biggest problem is that there’s simply no one else. Outside of the main party, every single character in this game is either a cackling cipher, a bystander with a few repeated lines, or a deus ex machina who’s there and gone within the space of a cutscene.
Some slight spoiler about Hope

That is basically my biggest problem with FF13,it feels so empty.

FF13 is utter diarrhea.

FFXII was also EDGE's GOTY. Deserved.

FFXIII seems to be a massive downgrade.

You've got to be kidding me.  The models in FFXII were NOT that detailed...it was all in the art.

The FFXIII model has 6 times the geometry, complex shaders, high resolution textures, and more independently moving features.

Which games have more complex models that XIII?  Not many.

ps3 ff13 has tearing, some bad texture artifacting, and a shoddy frame rate at times...

... i'm surprised you aren't FUCKING SUICIDING OMG!!!!

but hey, the story is shit, the characters are dire, the battle system is overhyped wank, the frame rate is up the wazzo, the textures are spaz city, and it tears like Gary Glitters new girlfriend .. WHATS NOT TO LIKE!?!

:/

Overreaction much?  I haven't played it yet and am not expecting much.  We're simply talking about visuals.  From videos I've seen, the game looks totally smooth and there doesn't seem to be tearing.  The framerate seems very steady with slowdowns only occurring in small bits.  The way in which they drop would also indicate that v-sync is always enabled.  If it were not, don't you think Eurogamer would have picked up on it?

Where did you see tearing occur?

Of course, it does demonstrate bias on both of our sides, I suppose (I think we can enjoy both systems, but have a preference for one over the other...right?).  Blue Dragon ran 10x worse than this, but you made excuses for it.  Remember that?  So did Lost Odyssey (though it was much smoother than Blue Dragon).  FFXIII at least seems to be one of the smoothest running JRPGs on the market.

I'm not arguing with you about the games quality, though.  I totally believe you on the front.

For me, the most interesting elements of an RPG are sense of exploration, good dungeon design (with some puzzles preferably), fun characters and a good, fast-paced, slightly strategic combat system. Not really the overall plot or dialogue choices. Oh and a good soundtrack helps :P

It's just that every time I see you discussing a game, it's usually about the graphics. I've never really seen you comment on a game's gameplay or design or mechanics or what you LIKE about a game beyond graphics.

Which is the polar opposite to me, considering I'm all about gameplay, design, and mechanics.

I suppose I don't find the discussion of those elements all that interesting or fun.  That is actually more important to me, really, but there isn't much for me to discuss.  That's all.  I suppose the issue is that there isn't much room for actual argument when discussing such things.  Graphics, however, always spark arguments.  I just need to learn that NeoGAF is actually a MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH more civilized place than Evilbore when it comes to such discussions.  I'm sorry if it pisses you off, that wasn't my intention.  I enjoy when people basically argue, but not when they start "yelling" and resorting to insults.  That's just too much and not worth it.

Quote
you talk about overreaction much but yet again you go on and FUCKING on about frame rates, smoothness, etc in a FUCKING RPG!
Dude, chill.  Seriously.  I don't let performance stop me from playing anything, but I do enjoy discussing it.  There's no reason to get so damn upset over something so trivial.  What's the deal, man?

I like bickering over graphics.  That's all it comes down to.

How about this?  I think Just Cause 2 on XBOX360 will kick the shit out of Final Fantasy XIII as a game.  Does that help?

I'm playing FFXIII and I'm going to approach it with an open mind. I honestly trust all of your opinions but I don't believe this is a game that should be missed even if it does turn out to be unanimously terrible.

Just to expand on your post

An opinion is an opinion. When people agree or disagree on a movie, nobody gets their nose bent out of shape. For some reason people seem to think there is a "right" opinion on videogames when its just like movies, or music or anything else.

Even though the impressions from the hardcore aren't exactly glowing for 13, I'll play it and my opinion will be based on my own mind. Not what GAF thinks of it or the bore thinks of it, or the reviewers think of it.

I don't think it's terrible(as a Rogue Warrior)...it will have a lots of haters though
It just fells like it has been designed by someone that has no imagination.
The way it plays in first 2 hours=the way it plays in next 18 hours...

The only thing that changes is combat system(new abilities),everything else basically stays the same, characters, level design, encounter design...hordes of enemies and a boss...but the boss encounter is just like a normal enemy(10x health),no talk no nothing...defeat him and then game teleports you to another set of characters...and then the same thing in another environment, hordes of enemies, boss, teleport
Cutscenes* are there, not so frequent, but most of them(99%) are focused on party characters past.
Looking forward to your impressions :)

The game’s producers have gone on record as saying that western audiences don’t understand this first section, but in fact we do: it’s just a bit rubbish. The first 25 hours of the game are one long corridor of palette-swapped enemies, fights that never quite find the right level of challenge, and cutscene after cutscene (after cutscene) leaving your joypad entirely idle.

Wow just wow

dark10x white knighting another PS3 "saviour" especially now that 360 version will be universally heavily downplayed as being the worse one?

Where the hell did you get that idea?  I've never said "FFXIII will be a great game!!!".  It's not a "PS3 savior" nor does the system really need one at this point.  The game doesn't really sound good and I'm not defending it!

If anything, I do find this game rather fascinating simply because of the negative opinions.  I'm more interested in playing it just to see what all the commotion was about, really.

I am partial to the PS3, though.  I'm totally biased and never admitted otherwise.  I am to PS3 as dcharlie is to XBOX360.  Of course, I tend not to bash the shit out of XBOX360 titles as I DO love the system...I simply prefer the PS3 for some reason.  My favorite game this year, thus far, is actually Mass Effect 2, believe it or not.

I suppose PC is where it's at.  I'm considering dropping $400 on a f*cking video card, for christs sake.

Relax dark I was kind of kidding, sorry.

Oh and you won't be able to play FF13 on a PC so don't waste the money there.
I'm not spending money to play FF13.  I just want to upgrade my PC for faster framerates and more awesome.

Is anyone surprised that the 360 version is not a perfect port?  I mean, honestly now.  It was still a smart decision by SE to do so as the game underperformed in Japan.

Furthermore, the game was in development for the PS3 for ages and only recently, at least in terms of the FFXIII's dev cycle, was it ported.  Of course it's not gonna be an exact port.

Yes and no,underperforming in Japan? It did good, almost 2 million sold, but yeah publishers see only their targets...
I have no problem that 360 has some generic 565p frame buffer resolution, game looks good, performance is better, texture filtering too.

Only thing that is really crappy are movies, real amateur job.
I guess they had more important issues than movies, but still...

Final Fantasy XIII isn’t an RPG; it’s something less.

This problem is exacerbated by the fact that Final Fantasy XIII  is relentlessly linear. I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: Many other RPGs are linear in the metaphorical sense, but the vast majority of this game is literally a straight line. Like the internet, it is a series of tubes in which you run forward, forward, ever forward, fighting battle after battle, breaking only to watch the lavish story sequences.

There’s a single exception. At about the 25-hour mark, you finally descend into the world of Pulse. Gran Pulse is a large open hub that breaks off into … well, more tubes, little winding capillaries that spider out from the heart. But the appeal of this area is less about the geography and more about what it represents — you can take a break from the story and undertake missions, which all involve killing some monster or another. These let you build up your stats, encounter side stories and generally avoid having to push forward.

This area came just at the right time, because I was sick of being in the tube. This was the most fun I had with XIII. But it’s too little and comes way too late: There’s not that much to do, because the missions just make you run back and forth across the plains killing monsters, and having to put up with all that bad level design just to get a little taste of (relative) freedom is the very definition of unbalanced. Then, once you’re done having fun, it’s back in the tube till the end of the game.
