I can't comment on battery life since I keep it wired like an umbilical cord when I'm at home, but wasn't it supposed to have better life than the regular? I take it to work (i work 9 - 5) and it's on sleep mode the whole time. Are you sure it might not be a wacked out battery?

Have you had battery troubles leaving it plugged in all the time? I've heard that keeping it plugged in even when fully charged is supposed to be bad for the lifespan. Apparently you get the greatest life out of a lithium battery by keeping it in the 50 - 80% range.

No, I keep my stuff plugged in since I only play it in bed, really. I just dug my XL out of my coat pocket, which has been unplugged and in sleep mode since like 8am (it is now 9pm). Still full in the blue.

Huh. Well Nintendo does have good QC I guess. I know with laptops it's the heat that kills the battery within a year or so but from what I've read, it's good to "stretch the legs" of the battery, so to speak, by dropping to 50% once in a while then recharging it.

Remember those old Ni-Cad batteries? Man I remember having those in my RC cars as a kid -- 10 minutes of run time, then 12 hours to recharge  :lol

I just don't see the point in keeping it, all I play are DS games on it and I can barely enjoy them while handling that behemoth. I'd be ecstatic about keeping it if I cared about anything coming down the pipe, but sadly that's not the case and tbh I'd rather give it to someone who actually wants one.

And it's possible my battery might be borked, I dunno. The one time I had it unplugged was the only time, I had played it for an hour or two in the afternoon and closed it, and that shit was strawberry red when I came back at night. Was in the middle of an Animal Crossing game too, good thing it didn't totally die.

EDIT: And I'd spring for a cheapo lite just to sate my insanity, but my high standards for condition have made it difficult to find a deal. I'll keep looking while I wait on you, tho. I haven't been able to find a new(ish) condition system sub-$100.

I don't think it was ever referred to as "Developers System" - always "Dual Screen"

Unless you got a source on that one

Are we talking about your 3DS XL here with the battery? Because flash cards with built-in CPUs (DSTWO in particular) run down the battery in sleep mode. Like, 100% to red light in a matter of a few hours if asleep. It has something to do with the way the 3DS' ARM handles DS sleep mode.

What does "DS" stand for?

To our developers, it stands for "Developers' System," since we believe it gives game creators brand new tools which will lead to more innovative games for the world's players.

It can also stand for "Dual Screen."

I posted in the Yoshi's Island GBA thread that Nintendo sent me a refurbished SP for $50 when mine broke, and didn't even request that I send my system to them. They may be willing to do the same for the DS Lite given its age, and I know they're less than $100 shipped from Nintendo. You'll have to have hold of a legit serial number, though, and there is a chance you'll have to send the unit in. Maybe get a terribly damaged one off craigslist or get one off eBay in "parts only" condition?

Yeah I couldn't believe they still had SPs in stock. And the SP was freaking flawless. And backlit! Like it had been sitting in their warehouse since 2005. If you do any GBA gaming still I would definitely jump on that one too. You can get a beat-up OG GBA for next to nothing these days.

That is definitely true but there is something about the SP that I prefer to the Lite. I think it's the form factor and the clicky buttons. My first DS Lite had that issue with the horrible d-pad diagonals and so Golden Sun on the DSL became a game of purely cardinal directions, a la Dragon Warrior 2. I switched to the SP after that.

You may remember in August that online game streaming service, OnLive, was in a spot of bother. Stories of impending bankruptcy came on the heels of a company that had previously been valued at an extraordinary $1.8bn. The next day news came that despite lay-offs, a buyer had been found, and “substantial investment” was being put into the company to keep it going. But what’s been revealed today, reported by the BBC, is that it was sold for only $4.8m. That would be 1/375 of its previous estimated value. Or 0.27%

Didn't they fire most of the staff or something immediately before selling to devalue the company on the books, then rehire some? There were some shenanigans going on but I can't remember. I think even the WSJ had a story about it.

I was talking to a friend about this just now, and I wanted to throw it up on here because well, this is the "Random Gaming Talk Thread".

Does anyone know why Link's hair is pink in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past? I mean, I dig it, but in the official art it's brown, and the SNES obviously could do browns. So what's the deal? Google only returned speculation, which I now bring here.

You'd have to ask Miyamoto.  It was his decision.

Well, my friend decided we'll have to go to Japan and visit Miyamoto at his home to ask him. I'll post here after we've spoken! :P

Because the game has a lot of browns (cue magus) and they thought it would clash. of course, that doesn't explain why they just didnt make it blonde.

If this is the case, maybe they made it pink because it's the same color as Rabbit Link? I dunno. I'd still like to hear Miyamoto-sama's side of the story. Maybe there will be an Iwata Asks when the inevitable Link to the Past remake/sequel rolls around.

That IS Miyamoto's story.

It was a technical limitation. They'd probably have preferred using blonde hair but certain sprites, especially the main character sprite have a limit to the amount of colors on their sprite. This has to do with the color palette of the snes gfx chip. Also, pink pops out unlike brown or yellow, and considering a lot of LttP features brown or yellow, pink was a good choice. You have to remember back in the day we didn't have sharp ass tvs.

It's the same reason Terra's hair is green and not blonde.

It's the only thing that makes sense!

Link's hat rim is yellow, and his belt is yellow. In many snes games, from ff6 to fucking zelda, some games just had to re-do certain colors. i highly doubt it was a creative decision to make his hair pink because of some artistic process. The same thing is true for the bunny. In game filled with browns and yellows, with Link's hat rim and belt already being yellow, it makes sense to use a color that will always stand out.

In terms of eye adjustment notice how the bunny IMMEDIATELY stands out?

Now look at this image.

WHY DO YOU THINK LINK'S HAIR IS PINK?

POP QUIZ!

A. because they wanted to express how pure he is and pink is often a color tied to being calm and pure.
B.  because they wanted his hair to be the same color as the bunny!
C. because the game has a shit ton of yellows and browns and having blonde/brown hair would be redundant.

Even most NES games ran around with 3 colors per sprite (4 max). Google says SNES had 16 colors max per sprite with color 0 always transparent. So, Link could have 15 colors.

Re: Random Gaming Talk Thread
« Reply #10067 on: October 16, 2012, 03:21:02 AM »
It looks like most LTTP sprites use all 15 possible unique colors, with Link's hair being a unique color. So the use of pink for contrast sounds about right to me.

Okay, so you're just speculating then.  Raban didn't ask for speculation.  You're probably right, but nobody has ever said so, and given it's Miyamoto, he might have just had a pair of pink sneakers he really liked at the time.

At least it's interesting to ponder, but I would still like to hear official word. I didn't know about the 15 color thing.

I suppose if we want a conclusive technical answer to the pink hair you could ask over at the ZSNES forums. The developers post quite often. Be prepared for some nasty people, ITGs and developer groupies though. Pretty sure even /b/ is more welcoming to strangers.
