For some finding work in other areas is incredibly difficult. A lot of specialized skills and talents you pick up over the years working in the game industry often doesn't translate to any other job. With that said there is a lot of Engineering turnover since they get the same work satisfaction in other related tech fields, are much better paid, and work better/less hours.

GDC is going to be interesting this year.

So with the news of Sony Santa Monica team losing their jobs, I have to say it's pretty depressing all around.  I can't even imagine how pissed off I'd be if a game I'd been working on for 3-4 years gets cancelled before it's ever even publicly shown and announced.  All that work down the drain.  Don't know how these guys and gals stay in the industry after stuff like that (and it happens way too frequently it seems)  :'(

I read a little about this.  maybe horseshit, but what people are saying is:  stig (gow3) was working on a sci-fi shooter for ~3/4 years that happened to be very similar in concept to destiny.  ~a year ago when destiny was shown, the project was changing to be something different, eventually that project was cancelled and those 50 people were let go (and sony santa monica is only around 200 people?).  cory balrog (gow2) is working on a new god of war, some of the people who were on secret sci-fi ps4 game moved to god of war 7.

so, yeah, I can see why it'd be disheartening when a new project is cancelled, some people are let go, and others are sent to work on safe sequel to a popular franchise.  and this is soon after the original black tusk game getting dropped for gears of war 5.

apparently the guy who directed little king story decided to open an indie game studio called onion games and together with super mario rpg/tingle rosy rupeeland character designer (and also little king story monster designer) and chulip (it's this weird low profile ps2 adventure game where you have to kiss everything including mailbox,ghost and the like so you can work the courage to kiss a girl) and suikoden composer they are going to announce a new game on march 7 called million onion hotel



i'm not sure how i feel about this, i'm happy to see someone who created so many wacky jappy game deciding to reinvent themself as a indie creator but the word indie always make my skin crawl... beside, they don't even say what it's going to be... a ios game? a pc game? put the game everywhere and see where it sticks?

I guess I was wrong. I've been enjoying the 2DS. Surprisingly, Street Pass is fun if only to see what random people around me are playing. Since I commute to school and go to an art school, there's plenty of people playing this thing. Though the sound kind of sucks. Maybe it's just my crappy ipod headphones ,but it's hard to hear on the train.  I think the system is pretty comfortable to hold(more then the PSP), but I do wish I had the XL for the bigger screens.

I've been enjoying Bravely Default. The risk and reward system is kind of fun. The game is kind of charming with it's characters and writing. I'm surprised people were down on the voice acting since it's pretty amusing.

I have never seen a fanbase act like this towards a semi-challenging franchise before. Even Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden/Bayonetta never had fans like this. Meanwhile, the rest of us are playing Ninja Gaiden 2, Hard Corp Uprising, Contra 4, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Super Meat Boy, Binding of Isaac, Guacamelee, Spelunky, FTL, Mushihime-sama Futari 1.5, Rock Band 2, Dead Rising, X-Com, N+, Catherine, Shinobi 3ds, Shin Megami Tensei IV, and without making a fucking complex out of it. Only Dark Souls is the true game for true gamers you plebs.

Dark Souls is a pretty good game. But holy shit, is it fanbase tier. You know what we did when we finished all of the games above? We moved on to the next one, Christ.

Demon Souls was pretty hard to me. I had no fun so I stopped playing it. I could care less if I'm deemed less of a gamer or whatever by it's rabid fanbase.

The fanbase does get kind of annoying. I remember GAF had a thread about an article that said DS had a better story then Skyrim, because it told it's story through atmosphere and what not. The thread then proceeded to have mass jerking off of Dark Souls because of how it's such A REAL GAME and not that casual crap that is Skyrim. Yet, it seemed the flaw of this comparison was lost on people. Skyrim is all about you being in this big world where you of course have to talk to people. DS takes place in a dead world. The games are going for very different things. Skyrim is also a popular game loved by everyone.

I guess the fanbase clings unto it, not  just because it's hard, but because it stands against everything those REAL GAMERS are against. It's not some casualifed game that those filthy masses like. Plus it's got lots of attention because of that very thing. I guess the fanbase feels validated by the game and it makes them feel like they aren't those pos FPS dudebro gamers.

It's annoying, but every fanbase is annoying.  I'm annoying.

Though it's not like every person who likes DS is like thing of course.

Played a new unannounced game today. Someone has done lost their fucking mind with this game.

So lets take Battlefeild shooting/guns, mash it up with Last of Us story telling/setting, and a huge dash of Watchdogs type open world that has seen better days. Then out of left field add a persistent mobile app to keep you immersed into the universe. Factions I was choosing between missions for are fighting a online war in what I could only assume was a multiplayer match in the open world of what seemed like a highly detailed linear story driven game. The missions are evolving and constantly changing from building up defenses to scouting for resources and intel. I was told that there are over infinite combinations of missions and that the story plays out through all of them randomly as the player continues to invest time into the universe. Multiplayer is handled in a strange way, everyone has their own motivations so each players game will be different and based on the side you take that's who you support through the games many campaigns.  It was a rather unique experience that I'll be playing again tomorrow.

I went from the app to the game and back so many times all the mission details and communications happen in the app. When you get a videomail/email/poke you can choose to ignore it or answer it. The pokes seem to be between players. Another cool feature is when the app knows that you're talking to it. You answer by bringing the tablet to life and it'll recognize your face. It is using the kinect for voice integration and feedback to have dialogue tree conversations with in game characters who then respond accordingly. I've never felt connected to a dialog experiences but this did it! It felt so natural to bring up my tablet and dial in to a npc to talk to them about a mission I was on. I can only imagine that if this is in development at this company if that tech is being adopted by one of their largest game franchises that is getting a 4th game soon. Game looks good for a nextgen XboxOne game there were others playing on PC in my game as well, but no PS4 players.

I've had my hands on the Division and thought this game did a better job at doing something more unique than just a shooter that's online. I felt like I was part of something that could change at any moment. And I think that the proposed title fits that sentiment. A revolution of change is coming and its up to you to see it through. Will you progress or regress? Leaders will rise and fall and the players will dictate what happens.

I can't wait till tomorrow

Yes, both Senran Kagura games are good musou-style beat-em-ups.  Much better than you'd think, considering the characters and settings.  Burst is 2.5D and does suffer from framerate issues, but nothing that has any real effect on the game play.  Controls are musou-style, but you can also launch (multiple) enemies and follow them to do air combos too.  The Vita game, Shinovi Versus, is a fully 3D, runs at a high framerate (it's one of the better-looking Vita titles) and plays the same, only with added super moves and like double the amount of playable characters.  It also has an online 4P vs. mode.  Both of these games also have a large amount of story, although most of it is just text. 

And both games are also pretty perverted.  The Vita game much more so than the 3DS game.  So warning if that stuff bothers you.  Basically Senran Kagura is the kind of game you'd expect to be complete shit, pandering to otaku-types, but the game play is actually pretty damn good.

Nah, it's nothing like Double Dragon.  Total musou- same types of attack strings and the focus is on crowd control, just in smaller, enclosed spaces.  Instead of it being an open stage, you fight enemies in waves as you move forward, more like a traditional beat-em-up, but the game play is otherwise just like something Koei would put out.
