Yes, Tom is high-up. Unfortunately.

I don't know the exact number, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could count XSEED staff with both hands, give or take a few more.

Guess who found himself wrangling with controversy regarding a transphobic slur in Akiba's Trip on xseed's twitter? spoiler: it's ya boy tom. :heh

https://twitter.com/XSEEDGames/with_replies

legit Q: is he a high-up dude? is xseed so few people they have a "flat structure" and there is no one to stomp this fool down? You'd figure someone would realize this dude speaking in public isn't a good look, but no?

"Using the word to lampoon the use of the word, essentially."

It's not really a parody if you actually have to explain to people that it's a parody.

Several times over.

Even after you apologize for it as a public tweet and then continue to reply to people with "it's a parody" after the fact.

OH, THE HORROR! THE HORROR!

no guys, i'm sorry, the guy might be an asshole,  but people getting offended upon reading the word trap in a made-up internet discussion is fucking ridiculous

not only i have never heard the term used as an actual slur and instead just seen it used to describe dude that looks like girls in anime but even if it was used as a slur... well that's trying to simulate someone being an asshole on the internet, using slurs would be appropriate!

If you're serious, the implications of someone being called a trap is that a transgered person is undesirable and something to be avoided. Hell, it's where the origin of the word for the anime archetype comes from, as in being misled/lied to into thinking the character is of the opposite gender. When someone calls a transgered person a trap, it's implying that he/she is purposefully trying to lure and "trap" straight men.

Not only that, it's a apparently a shitty translation of the original text which doesn't reference being transgender at all. This all sounds like something that could have been easily avoided and Tom could stop making excuses for.

Nekama is a portmanteau of net and okama (オカマ).  オカマ is a term relating to a man dressing up as a woman for entertainment from what I remember.

Nekama is basically a man posing as a woman on the Internet.  It would be a shitty idea to translate it to "trap" since "trap" has negative connotation in the English language in many circumstances, not just the Internet (and Sunblade went into the reasons why).  Sure people are assholes on the Internet, but this is a commercial product being sold to an audience that includes LGBT consumers, and that's something to keep in mind with respect to localization.  The biggest issues aren't just the word use, but also the tone in which the statement is written ("goddamn trap"), and also the fact that the company can't just leave the matter alone and continues to dig themselves into a deeper hole.

Localizations are not just "translate the word and you're done".  Localizations encompass much, much more than that.  I don't endorse changing things up entirely from Japanese to English or even English to French, but as long as reasonable changes are made (and this should have resulted in a completely reasonable change and no one would've said anything about it otherwise), it's fine.

eh but i doubt that was the intention they were going for, it's a word anime fans use commonly to describe this sort of thing and it makes sense to use it in a videogame that is desperately pandering to the anime crowd , i've seen it used a lot and i've never seen anybody being offended by it (yes, seriously, pinky swear, i'm sorry if i look ultra-dense) until today when it reached a videogame, the land where everything is super offensive

even then i'm not sure what word they should have used instead... do we have an actual slur for people pretending to be the wrong sex online? the closest i can think off is catfish and that's a hella of a stretch

You don't even have to say the word itself if you're doing a localization. Rephrasing the whole sentence can work fine. Like in this case, the intent behind that sentence is an asshole being derisive to the earlier poster because he things they're a guy pretending to be a girl on the internet. If you wanted an easy cop-out, you could use something that already exists on the internet like "Girl? Tits or GTFO", which keeps the poster as being an asshole, is a typical 4channer and thinks the person posting is a guy.

You could even just put in "You're a guy" or a very literal "This has nothing to do with someone who only pretends to be a girl on the Internet" and it'd make be a lot more kosher while retaining the same point/attitude. The reason Tom is being super problematic about it is when he says shit like this on the official twitter account for the company:

when everyone on twitter is pointing out that he's completely in the wrong, and he just continues to make things worse instead of GTFO twitter.

So it's that time of year to use PS+ prepaid card for next years sub. I scratch off the card and go to use it only to find out it's invalid and not activated. Sony doesn't seem to deal with these things but instead passes you off to some ho hum prepaid card processor. After spending 2 hours on the phone with them getting no where they have the gull to tell me to buy a new card and that I'm shit out of luck. Anyone ever have something like this happen with one of those prepaid cards?

I'm fuming mad  :maf

I bought the card back in 2011 and didn't have the original receipt, but I did have the transaction details for the charge.

Yes because I see the value in buying discounted PSN/XBL cards I'm a hoarder? Well you might be right I still have a pile of those 1600/4000 point cards around here. I've even recently started to buy PSN cards when they are on sale. I can't resist the savings! It's why I have GCU and buy my games from Bestbuy.

But that aside It still is annoying to find out after a few years that the card wasn't activated properly. It's not like I can go back to Target and demand a new one since they most likely have cleared the data from their system.

You really don't want to know how many discounted cards I have... I had to buy a small safe for them.

I bought two years of PS+ on black friday, which I was going to keep until whenever did they one of those "get bonus months" promos but ended up using them early cause I feared exactly that happening. Only ever had it happen once with a $20 card, but it's enough to make me nervous.

IIRC you don't have to redeem your time/dollars when you put a code in PSN. Just use this as a reminder to check all your cards.

Bz you're good at scamming companies, I just bought a replacement headset that works, I want to return the package back to Target with my broken one. I packed it back up and used the same sticker. Looks pretty much the same, except with some slight tampering to the sticker when I picked at it. Can I get away with it?

Demi: depends on if you have a receipt and if you are in the return period. It isn't scamming in my eyes. Target will just rtv (return to vendor) your broken headset and give you a new one which you could then take and return at the place you got the replacement.

I've never done it with broken headsets, but since besbuy no longer does post purchase price matching I've had to rebuy a game and return it. So I could get the game for cheaper. Its why I have amassed such a large collection of games.

early reports don't sound good on gunvolt!

It has some... issues.  Story's not very good.  Difficulty seems nonexistent.  I'm just standing there tagging enemies three times, then holding R to use the lightning ring to get rid of everything.  I didn't even remember I had super attacks until I looked on the bottom screen and figured I'd use them. Cutscenes are skippable with start and I can turn the in-game text off with X at least.

I hope everything doesn't become a bullet sponge later on.

First stage had me fighting the same boss twice in one minute.

I saved a little anime girl and now she adores GV.  :uguu

The background art looks awesome and the music sounds really good. Voice cast sounds decent if I'm not skipping cutscenes.

Edit: Ok, the other stages are much better.  The intro stage is pretty poop in comparison.

i remember when everyone laughed and laughed and laughed at the reveal of galgun. these days, what kind of reception would it get i wonder??

People would love it and call it "art".

Wait...the 8-bit game is already up!?  How did I miss that?   :dizzy

early reports don't sound good on gunvolt!

Yeah, it's not really grabbing me.  The game starts off insanely easy, to the point of boredom, but at least seems to get a bit more challenging.  I just find the game play mechanics kind of dull.  Target enemies (by only shooting forward-- no aiming available) and let your energy shield-thing do all the combat for you!   :zzz  Maybe it gets better.

I mean Dead or Alive is pretty tame compared to the stuff being put out. I remember when boob giggle was a big deal. Now it's just an expected thing.

(Image removed from quote.)

I'm late replying to this, but here's the thing- it's supposed to be a message board reply from some random asshole poster insulting another poster...and implying that he is a guy pretending to be a girl.  Not transgender.  But yes, they could have gone with something else in place of it to avoid controversy.

The tone is waaaay off from the Japanese, too.  It's just a crap translation all around.

So roughly translated, it's "It has nothing to do with you, nekama" versus "Nobody asked you, goddamned trap."

Yeah...that is pretty harsh.  O_o

But I can still see how they would localize it that way, to mimic Internet board/twitter idiocy.  Nobody would be saying anything if they didn't use the word "trap."

Regardless, Xseed should apologize instead of trying to argue it.  And this Tom guy needs to stop doing PR.

Here's a pretty good post regarding the uncomfortable truth in the game industry. Gamers by and large are irredeemable scum: http://www.puppygames.net/blog/?p=1574

We all know this. Everyone I personally know who's in the game industry agrees with this sentiment. In fact I know several high profile PR specialists who's job it is to deal with these people and they're distraught about it. It's a genuinely shitty situation when a sizable portion of your consumer base goes out of their way to destroy people's livelihood by pirating games and on top of that does what it can to ridicule and demoralize you and your team. The second half of the blog post does cover that even negative attention is a good thing but it's still crappy.

The Phil Fish bit made me laugh (because it's true): "Good old Phil is sitting pretty on a giant mound of cash the likes of which you will probably not even be able to comprehend, let alone earn in your lifetime. For every one of you that enjoyed denigrating him and thrilled at insulting him, there are now another thousand people who listen to every word he says. When he walks into the restaurant where you pitifully scrub the floor like a servile wretch in order to pay for DLC in DOTA2, you’ll call him sir." :lol

I should add that I've had the great pleasure of getting to know a ton wonderful people who really love games but they are the silent minority by comparison. I've been fortunate enough to meet them at events and it's an amazing feeling getting to see that kind of energy first-hand and being able to speak to people who play and love your games. That vastly overshadows any negative feelings but I still think it's an issue that needs to be brought up.
