IS the Withcer 3 the big game of last year for people with shit taste to complain about? I constantly see these threads claiming the combat and gameplay was bad. What? Was it a little janky? Sure. Was it terrible? Not in a world that accepts the combat of Bethesda and Bioware. It's no Bloodborne or Ys, but whats there to me was never on auto pilot. Sure, it involved a lot of rolling around, but at least the game most of the time asked you to keep paying attention as enemies were aggressive and you really had to wait for chances to attack and parry. The abilities were good for crowd control and as a whole the game never felt like the combat was something to ignore.

It's mainly die hard Bloodborne, Soul's fans from what I see.

Nice piece.

Agreed, occasionally Polygon writes decent articles and this is definitely one of them. I do find it interesting that Irani message board goers were also arguing about turn-based vs. action in the FF7 battle system :P

Saw a lot of people on that other board bitching about it not being as good as the first game, so I finally tried it today. It's just as awesome as ever. Only complaint I agree with so far is that The Imp character seems to be overpowered.

Imp is definitely a little op but they can always balance that. Tried the beta. Seemed as fun as the first one to me.

Imp is probably over powered, but it's a beta, that's the kind of thing they should be looking at. My biggest complaint would be that I haven't found a plant variant that I'm as effective with as I am with the computer scientist. And it might be largely due to the imp being over powered actually. Pretty decent with the orange guy. I also don't really like the goat thing.

Overall though, they took the first game, added a bunch of shit and cool features, I'll buy it. Really stoked that my characters from garden warfare 1 will transfer.

I really enjoyed the first game, and was happy to have something well-tuned that I could still play hotseat with my 10-year-old son. It was fantastic. My only complaint is that the later game modes (Vanquish Confirmed, Suburbination) are desolate wastelands now. I'm going to have to organize a boosting session just to get the 360 Achievements unlocked.

I'll be buying the sequel.

Getting Garden Ops achievements seems impossible in the first game because one dumbass would always ruin shit for the rest of us. I have 840/1500 on the Xbone version. I'm satisfied with that.

Why is the d-pad dead center in the controller? They took the borked 64 controller and made it equally as stupid but for different reasons.

Yeah, that's dumb but I looked it up and there's like tops 15 games (out of ~300 in the US) where you actually need the d-pad.

D-pad fuckery aside, I think it's the better controller for having 2 prongs and a better joystick. Price is ridiculous though for a second hand 3rd party controller ($70-90 on eBay).

I liked Blade's story, Blade X is a bit too simplistic though, made even more apparent by all the extraneous content the game has.

So a new Super Robot Wars Original Generations (OG) got announced.  Trailer goes up soon.  OG series has some great, great animations and hasn't fallen off the wagon to budget concerns like licensed Z3 did.

These are still pretty much the most badass attack animations ever put to videogame.  Punching people through a mountain and then IMPACT bunch of big kanji characters show up; never gets old.

So isn't there a Twitch app for PS3 ? I created a US account only to not find it on Store, it's only listed for PS4 despite what Twitch themselves said in last fall... Also doesn't work through the browser. Can still access it via Chromebook but it's a bit distinguished mentally-challenged.

And no I can't just upgrade to a newer system.

Let me see you play JSR to be the judge of that. No shade, but most people who say JSR is a bad game are dog shit fucking terrible at JSR. It's like watching a cat play Scrabble.

I haven't played JSR in years because playing it on a dual shock 3 is impossible because the sticks don't have grip to allow you to spray motion tags fast. When I got a PS4, I tried out JSR with the DS4, and it's a slight improvement still not ideal. Sony sticks and their stick placement are dog shit. Your controller sucks if I cannot play JSR on it.

I'm buying this Hori some time to replace the DS4 so I can play JSR again. I usually play it once a year, but I haven't since I sold my 360.

See? ACTUAL CONCAVE STICKS WITH GRIP. See? ACTUAL STICKS WHERE STICKS SHOULD BE PLACED.

I played JSRF first.

I have played JSRF mmmehhhhhhhh...once. One 40-50 hour playthrough.

I've replayed JSR, without hyperberole, about 30 times. It isn't even close. I've tried replaying JSRF and it's...just not the same. JSR is a game of skill; JSRF is looking at a map and finding where to find tags. It's a great game, but it's not better than JSR.

I love JSR but it is janky as hell in controls even if it has a certain arcadey quality to it. Good point on the PS sticks being a bit too soft (That DC stick was hard, to the point of being painful in long sessions) but I found the tagging mechanics to be pretty meh upon replaying it anyway. Never played JSRF sadly, but I can see why they did away for that even though it might not be too great.

The PS4 / supposedly PS3-Vita app is pretty recent, the PS4 app was launched last fall. In typical Sony fashion, it's only available in the US and despite a PS3 being displayed on the Twitch page, no one can apparently be arsed to finish or upload that.

Honestly as the years goes on, the PS3 went from passable to dogshit in those areas. Pretty laughable they pushed it as a media center.

Hori makes so many great controllers. They're the best third party controller manufacturer. I was gifted an awesome 360 hori controller a few years ago and I still use it.

It's really comfortable and the D-Pad is implemented almost really nicely. I say "almost" because the downside is that the down button on the D-Pad doesn't respond for mine sometimes, which is a big problem. But I heard that can be fixed.

Vom: i like motion tags. Doing a motion tag while dudes are chasing you and finishing it up before they ruin your combo is soooo good, tense, and extremely satisfying. Either way, whether I like them or not doesn't matter. I spray tags extremely fast. Convex sticks do not have the grip that allow me to spray fast. DC stick hurts after a while, it's true, but it does have grip. When I play JSR, I always get motion tags in my head and spray them like a beast, and when I play it on PS3 I fail my tags ALL THE TIME.

JSR does have wonky controls. But it has a learning curve as well. I don't see it as any different than a game like Dark Souls or Resident Evil. It's Japanese through and through. Playing more JSR gets you used to the controls. What people forget is that JSR you are on roller blades and that is a huge part of it. It is also a momentum based platformer.

A new Jet Set would never happen as Smilebit is dead. Whatever remnants of Smilebit are now at Nagoshi's RGG team.

I'd like to replay JSRF sometime but its replay value is pretty nill.  I'd like an HD port more than anything. Jet Set is dead. No one bought HD and both games had historically low sales. RIP IN PEACE.

The tagging didn't bother me back then, but upon replaying the remake I found it pretty repetitive and it broke the flow of the action (esp. the large ones). Maybe they could have done something to diversify it with deeper mechanics but it's a bit pointless to harp on that now. Game was still pretty fine to me, "navigation" or "traversing" is still the gameplay peak for me (aside from the stellar art direction).

Do you think it breaks the flow of the action because in the larger states there's too much going on to spray larger tags?

I like them because they make the game more of a puzzle: where are the big tags, in what order should I spray, and in what section? Playing something like Flight or Flight wouldn't work without big tags. Route planning is one of the best parts! JSRF is pretty boring because every tag is small and there's no time limit. Without motion tags, the time limit is meaningless.
