Article promoting the new baldur's gate has some real neat bits in it

Quote
“It was a big challenge because all of the Baldur’s Gate original assets like the 3D models that make up these sprites, the 3D models for the levels in the original game, these archives were lost,” explained Beamdog lead designer Phillip Daigle during a recent interview at an event in San Francisco. “There was a data tape in some guy’s garage, and it flooded, and it was gone. There goes the history of Baldur’s Gate. That’s the case with a lot of classic games. There was a single archive, it was in some guy’s basement and sorry, the disc rotted, and it’s gone now.”

[...]

“In the original Baldur’s Gate,” explained Daigle, “these cobble stone streets here, this was just a close up picture of coffee beans and they just repeated over and over again. In ‘98 you had a 15 inch CRT, so you’re not going to notice or care probably. Nowadays when you’ve got an HD screen, you’re like, ‘Oh, those are coffee beans.’

Joe and I met up with a slime appears and a couple of his buddies at Super Bitcon in OKC. It's basically a huge video game flea market, with thousands of games for basically every system that's ever been releases. Lots of import games, too, especially for Playstation and Saturn. I ended up not really getting anything, but slime was slapping down fat stacks of cash left and right. He even bought some kind of old monitor to play NES games on!

Sadly, no one ended up with a copy of Little Samson for the NES.

Eh...not really. If you want something rare, you're probably gonna pay a lot more than you would online, or a similar price at the very least. The more common games aren't too bad, though.

Flea market searches were the best, because sometimes you've find a booth where the owner didn't really know what any of the games were worth, so you could pick up some rare stuff on the cheap. Most of the vendors at Super Bitcon knew what their games were worth, so finding a great deal wasn't too easy. Kind of depended on what you were looking for, though.

Most flea markets are full of shit, and most sellers are familiar with the value so it really defeats the purpose. It's still fun to look though.

my greatest find ever was getting panzer dragoon ii for two bucks. same flea market had a copy of wolfenstein 3d on 5" floppies that the dude wanted $40 for. it's always a crapshoot

i had a friend who tried to use Craigslist for games years ago. he said resellers would call ppl up who were advertising weekend sales just to see what time they'd open, then show up 20 min early and beg to have a look. it got damn near impossible to find anything worthwhile

Well if that is a genuine LE and they run out of it you could probably flip it for a decent amount, but then again it's SO and nobody cares about that series.

Take The Binding of Isaac, add more bullet sponge enemies, less interesting level design, a reload system that kills game flow and limited ammo that eventually forces you to stop using that sweet new weapon and you've got Enter the Gungeon.

I really hoped that would be a good game because I would love a isaac like game that had more intricate bullet patterns

hopefully they will keep tinkering with it so it ends up nice

Me too.  I'm burnt the fuck out from Isaac and was really hoping EtG would scratch that itch.

Basically the first floor is a massive slog and you have no guarantees of getting markedly stronger.  Granted that's true in Isaac, but the first floor in that game is extremely short and you generally get other options to help increase power (spirit hearts for devil deal snowball and money for shops).

Also, in EtG your power curve can decrease over time due to limited ammo, which is somewhat against the spirit of the genre.  I had a run near lategame where I only had my default pea shooter because I was out of ammo with everything else.

http://www.zam.com/article/328/vaping-congressman-accused-of-using-campaign-funds-on-1300-worth-of-steam-games

Quote
Representative Duncan Hunter, a Republican from San Diego County, previously rose to short-lived internet fame for this video of him smoking an e-cigarette during a Congressional hearing. The hearing, by the way, concerned a ban on e-cigarettes on public aircraft.

"Yes, I vape," Representative Hunter has also written in an editorial, which carries about the same gravitas as 'yes, I wear a fedora' or 'yes, I wear a trenchcoat even though it's bright and sunny and I'm not in a trench of any kind. Quit telling me how to live my life, Mom.'

Anyway, he's back in hot water -- hee hee! -- for allegedly using campaign funds on videogames on 68 separate occasions over a scant two month period, totalling $1302. Supposing each transaction represents a separate game, that's an average of $19 per title, and considering the buying period ran from October 13th to December 16th of last year, I'm going to wager a lot of those were newer releases and big box games purchased during Steam's end-of-the-year sale, maybe with some bundles thrown in. I don't know. He seems the type.

I thought of that last night : can someone gives me the short and sweet about Deus Ex Mankind Divided. I saw the trailer and the gameplay video (both from E3 2015) and I know it has been pushed back which is maybe for the better (I liked the original game but it's obvious it didn't stay long enough in the oven). Anything else of note ?

I wasn't too fond of it, but I only played about 5-6 hours so I never got a real good feel for the game.

I've put in about 13 hours in Gungeon and the moment to moment gameplay is great, however there is a lot of baggage that makes it unfun.  Especially scaling HP.  The entire point of this genre is to get gradually stronger and scaling HP does the exact opposite.  :derp

I'd rather see enemies with different and more complex patterns over more HP.

I quite like Nuclear Throne, tho it is a bit thin in certain ways so I hope the devs keep adding stuff, but as far as pace and mechanics etc it is v fun. I haven't played gungeon, but after seeing some vids I would say it's more rogue legacy than nuclear throne tbh. which, :doge

Level 25 now, not a single hour has passed with me feeling anything but... how do you put it?
I feel like I'm not exactly having fun, but not bored. Just sort of complacent, like a super neutral stance on the game.
It's not bad but it's not fun, it's just busy work tbh

Pick up the third game! The combat is improved in the later entries, but you'll miss out on nice parts of the story. You can skip the zombie apocalypse spin-off.

Got my Summon Night 5 Kickstarter bundle FINALLY. Came in a cool outer package but they actually shipped THAT as the box.

So the post office worker was prolly like "what a fuckin virgin" when the box has some guy saying "OPEN QUICKLY SO WE CAN BATTLE WITH THE SWEATINESS" even my tenga eggs were more discreet.

And its covered in stickers, so if I peel them, its bound to rip off the cool packaging. Why not just take the effort to put THAT in a similar sized box?

Oh well, whatevs.

BLIZZARD  :point

Back in the day, Starcraft GHOST was another surprising cancellation. I'm sure there are heaps of them, just not announced titles. I'm certain Nintendo and Blizzard kill their young projects all the time.
