I don't get the appeal of these shooter mmo's ala Destiny/The Division.

At least in any true long term sense like an mmo. These games aren't really mmo's. They are diablo or borderlands. I would go nuts if I tried to play Diablo or Borderlands every day for months. Those are fine games. But they aren't mmo's. They don't have the breadth and scale of real mmo's.

No surprise after hearing from the dev of Ruiner that they were all working for CDprojectred and left due to creative differences with Cyberpunk 2077. At least this game is real and you can play it right now! It looks amazing we got to see it here during GDC and it was godlike.

So Severed came out today on Vita.  I feel so bad for those guys.  Guacamelee is such a damn fine game, so I'm definitely gonna give this new game of theirs a shot, but as a legit good developer, limiting your sales to Vita digital only has got to be depressing as hell.

I'm sure it'll come out on Steam and everything in 6-12 months so it'll be fine, but yeah, I just feel sorry for Drinkbox Studio!

Wanted to see what Mark/Lord Karnage was doing lately on youtube, yikes  :what

Past month or few he's been uploading shit like this. He says in the video above that its essentially an attempt at revenge because other creators on youtube would steal and use his footage. Getting views on small videos (even though youtube apparently pays for minutes of a video watched now).

Thing is, his patreon for Classic game Room was getting $10,000 at the start of the year. If making and editing videos was too time consuming, he could've started streaming on Twitch, and use footage from twitch streams for more in depth youtube reviews. There is no reason to hold a vendetta when you're getting 10k a month for reviewing or talking about videogames.

Mark is about to fuck up in a really bad way out of pride. There were much better ways of keeping fans happy while getting the most money out of it.
OH!

Weeeeelllll, Persona is popular in the 400k range, but they take eight thousand years since P4 to make a sequel, so who knows if they've lost momentum.
FF on the other hand has been on a total downward spiral since XII and there's a real possibility that FFXV doesn't break 1 million.

Might both be kind of low.  But I do think there's real consideration that rpg gamers in Japan aren't gonna have $200 to shell out within 2 weeks of each other, so  :derp

Probably would have been way smarter for P5 to release a month after FFXV increased the hardware base.  But now that Sega owns Atlus, Sega is gonna Sega.

I'm sure both will do fine, but both took too long to come out. P5 missed the boat to really capitalize on that Persona 4 hype. It easily could have been a Souls situation here. This niche series getting as big as possible thanks to strong word of mouth and new attention getting installments. This is for the west. In Japan maybe it's the same, but I bet this game sells better than the new Tales game if only because Tales seems to be pissing off people. Persona is far more consistent and this one really has upped the production values. I bet it gets a big push there.

I don't think FFXV has much to worry about. Their seems to be actual hype behind it and I think the open world aspect is going to carry it far. I don't think the downward spiral will hurt it if the game is good. 14 has done well and I think Japan is probably less down on FF then the rest. Only thing that may hurt it's sales chance is that its a console game, but they did say they've gotten strong pre-orders already.

lol yeah dosen't Tales of Whatever also come out soon before the other two. It's 3 big jrpgs close to each other.

So I guess amazon forgot UC4 comes out tomorrow because it was buried with the cat food in last night's overnight delivery. So now I've  gotta get my work done today so I can freaking play it. I'm hoping this game is better than 3 because  I just finished that game and it was not good at all. Well I  guess I've  never really liked a UC game very much, but that was just a sign of the times kind of game. Hope UC4 blows past my expectations

I feel like more than anything Dirty Bomb would have benefited from the "hats" version of F2P instead of the League of Legends F2P.

Also it's still in beta? Like it's almost a year old now. Not really enticing me to throw money at it.

"BET A", you mean.

I haven't spent a single cent either. There's no real incentive. The skins are all just ugly texture swaps which at best can offer some camouflage against certain backgrounds. Only the founder variants are worth considering, since they actually have distinct models, but they're obviously not available any more.

The most recent event (rogue en vogue) seemed to be primarily designed to deplete people's credit hoards (mine was at 300k, could have easily been 500k), so they might be setting up to adjust things soon.

As a follow up to something I mentioned elsewhere, I listened to that 2014 podcast that Tom Chick did with one of Metacritic founders (and the one in charge of the videogames part) :

http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2014/04/23/qt3-games-podcast-metacritical/

Plenty of insights on how Metacritic actually work and their company policies, so if you've ever wondered...
The crunchy aside from Tom Chick is that ever since he's on Metacritic, there's only three publishers that never bothered him with complaints or threats to reduce access : EA, Activision & Nintendo. Too big to care, I guess (and in Nintendo's case, some insularity on top of that).

You mean the people who say that Rowan Kaiser gave a bad score to Stellaris to get back at TotalBiscuit through Paradox ? Completely insane but that's par for the course for "militant gamers". On the Idle forum, Bruce Geryk weighs in :

Quote
I think it is less about a "grievance culture" and more about the demographic that populates game message boards. Rob's comment about "game culture" is on point, I think. I was reading these same types of comments as letters to the editor in Computer Gaming World 20 years ago.

And I think he's right. Rob Zacny is looking into this too hard and he's missing the simple answer despite having all the clues in hand : the first part of the discussion will probably sound familiar to anyone here, with people having invested their own self worth in mass market products and in desperate need for validation. I was way more interested when he and Danielle Riendeau discussed how those fan meltdowns affected their editorial jobs : it partly inhibits sites into the "7-9 out of ten scale" and scares reviewing talent away because ultimately having to support the hassle of death threats by rabid manchildren is not worth it for any normal person. The part about being estranged to your own theorical readership was also a toughtful aside.

I liked a lot the part where they discussed sexism in SF5 or the Witcher 3 and why it didn't bothered them as much as it may or should have (Danielle Riendeau being a SJWest SJW stereotype, by her own admission) when in middle of the game.

Yeah, this shit goes back to the Usenet days. The difference now is the overlap with the roving nutjobs that dip into every cesspool, some of which they've mentioned on the podcast. They all try to make it fit the "SJWs are killing our hobby" narrative.
