Got the Gigabyte Geforce RTX 2070 Super Aorus.

Boost clock tops out at 1905 mhz(!) on this model vs. the 1770 for the founders and 1815mhz for the MSI Gaming or Gigabyte Gaming OC.

BFV@1440p - Ultra Settings - Ray Tracing/DLSS ON = 68fps
BFV@1440p - Ultra Settings - Ray Tracing/DLSS OFF = 100+ fps

I'm thinking I'll get either a 2070 or a 5700xt around black friday time, 1070 is nearing retirement age if I wanna be going in on Cyberpunk. Glad to hear you are liking it

Quote
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is drawing inspiration from its combat from an unlikely source, with its lead combat designer calling the game “very similar” to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The game’s debut video at E3 didn’t reveal too much about how combat would feel in the game, but comparisons to From Software’s most recent title started flying in after reports of its behind-closed-doors demo, and this statement from Respawn confirms that that’s no coincidence.

Is "it's the Sekiro of [genre/series]" going to be the next thing?  :doge

I think it had a posture/block meter that filled up and (i assume) broke your block once full? Maybe that's what they're referring to.

My 980 Ti is roughly equivalent to a 1070 so you'll be making the same jump as I did.
Just make sure to pick one with a nice boost clock like this Gigabyte to give you that extra mileage.

For 4k you have to go all the way with a 2080 Ti (unless you're willing to turn off some bells and whistles) so only a heavily discounted 2080 or a 2070 Super make sense in this high-end tier.
Aiming for anything lower and the 5700XT is the best bang for buck (which sits somewhere between a vanilla 2070 and 2070 Super for a much lower price) but it's AMD and the blower reference design is horrendous.
It shows OC potential (even though it gets rather unstable) so after market designs in August could upend things a bit more.

Pretty crazy to that AMD released a card back in February (Radeon VII) which is already obsolete and EOL.

Yeah i was going to upgrade this month but instead i dropped a bit more and upgraded everything else and got a Ryzen 3600, which I'm loving.  So now I'm gonna have a wait a while anyway but that will give time for the 3rd party 5700's to be tested and such.

I'm not doing 4K, just two 1080 monitors (one 1920x1080 the other 2560x1080). At most I might upgrade to 1440p but that's a maybe, either way I won't need the best shit out there. So we'll see where prices and benchmarks are in a few months and I'll decide.

Any reason to upgrade from a 980GTX yet? Last years models were still not really where I want the increase to be. Can we do 4k @ 60fps on pretty much all new games maxed out with these new cards? Are we there yet?

I still use a 1080p monitor but enjoy that downsampling and probably get a 4k TV one of these days and TV-out to it and would like to game in 4k.

a 2080ti (probably a 2080 Super too) will do 4K/120+ in just about anything until you turn on raytracing, then you get like 40-50fps :doge, but raytracing isn't really that common in games yet anyway.

The 2070 Super murders the 980GTX. So that's certainly an upgrade worth making. I sorta fell into the trap of the commentators and tech people that GPU's haven't evolved much but the difference between my 980 Ti and this 2070 Super is night and day and not
unlike other generational leaps. The card can do 4k quite well in some older games and without ray tracing even BFV is doable in 4k on a single 2070 Super.

According to Benchmarks:
Wolfenstein: The New Collusus - 4k Ultra @ 92fps
Shadow of the Tomb Raider - 4k Ultra @ 45fps
GTAV - 4k Ultra @ 55fps
Forza Horizion 4 - 4k Ultra @ 63fps
Battlefield 4 - 4k Ultra @ 60fps

Most games get you in the range of 60fps on 4k.
With OC models you hit that 60 more stable. However, at 4k the CPU and engine also become important.
I'm still running on a 4790k actually and unlike what I expected at 1440p that isn't a bottleneck so far.

On 1440p everything runs at 100+ fps easily. The 2070 Super is equal to the RTX 2080 or slightly faster depending on the game and clocks.
If you want to hit everything at 60fps or higher on Ultra at 4k, the only option is the 2080 Ti or the Titan RTX.
At those resolutions the 2080 Super only gets you about 5fps more on average because the 2070S, 2080 and 2080S all use the same chip with a different configuration.

I'm not sure if that's changing in a year or so. Maybe if AMD releases a 5800XT next year Nvidia might do something about the pricing but I'm not seeing anything else on the horizon that will upend the status quo.
The next big thing is of course the RTX 3XXX series but who knows when those release.

On the console side I'm expecting more from Ryzen (great results on PC already in terms of performance at least) which should finally put the CPU's to use.
Because the Bulldozer and Piledriver cores used in the Xbox One and PS4 have always been garbage tier.

Ray tracing looks nice and I'm looking forward to Control as that seems to be build with Ray tracing in mind, as opposed to Ray tracing bolted on. However, the performance hit is huge so it will only be used sparingly I think.

I am curious what the partner cards for the 5700XT will look like.

The reviews make me think that the blower being trash might be throttling the hell out of that card.

At a 2.1 ghz overclock on custom cooling the card gets an average of 5% to 7% performance boost

AIB versions will run cooler and won't be as noisy but it seem that a memory-bandwidth bottleneck is holding back further performance gains with the 256 bit memory bus and there's even talk of some built-in hardware limitation that keeps it from going beyond 2.1 ghz. For its price the 5700XT is not a bad card at all but if was stanning for AMD and not in a hurry to upgrade I would hold out for a 5800XT instead.

Forza Horizion 4 - 4k Ultra @ 63fps
Battlefield 4 - 4k Ultra @ 60fps

Most games get you in the range of 60fps on 4k.

See this honestly makes me sad. The 980 was what? 3 years ago at this point? And I was running maxed GTAV in 4k at an unstable 30-40fps. 3 jumps later in tech and still not at 60fps is eh.

Generally I don't like to upgrade cards until the new one doubles the performance of the previous one. So games that were doing 30fps at 4k are now doing 60fps. This seems pretty close, but the fact that it's not clear and stable there is a bummer.

Also I have 2 980GTXs and been running them SLI so for games that support SLI basically been getting like 1.5x-1.75x 980 performance already so this isn't much of a leap. Now since 75% of games do not support SLI (maybe more like 95% these days don't support it), yeah it's still a good upgrade.

I'll probably jump in on these models, but might wait one more year to upgrade.

The game that taxes my rig the most is Hitman 1/2. I tried playing the new Bank map and I don't think I'm even hitting 30fps at 1080p without SLI (haven't tried SLI but I think Hitman does support it and it helps). I usually keep SLI defaulted off and only turn it on for specific games when I need the extra performance because SLI on fucks up a lot of games.

How does my cpu still hold up these days? I'm running an i7-4790 at 4ghz w/16gb ram. Wondering if I should just do a new build from scratch in the next year.

i7 4790K (4.0ghz, wasn't overlocking) w/ 16gb DDR3 RAM was what I was running and the Ryzen 3600 w/ 16gb DDR4 RAM has been a pretty big leap for games and photoshop performance for me even though I kept the same GPU. I've seen benchmarks that put the performance at 2+ times the speed of my older setup and it does kinda feel like that. I'm really digging it and it was a surprisingly cheap upgrade -- $200 for the 3600, around $100 for mobo, $70 for RAM.

The GPU benchmarks Nintex are citing are for the 2070 so that's a mid(ish) level Nvidia card. The 2080ti is the big boy super card and blows the 970/980 cards out of the water but its $1000-1200 so you are gonna be dropping some dough on it. 4K is a big leap since it's basically 4x1080p so it can still be a challenge for mid level cards to get over 60fps with max settings.

Also part of it is that AMD has not really been competitive in the GPU market so Nvidia has no reason to keep pushing the line.

Yeah, I've been hesitant to believe my cpu was holding me back because I swear I only built this rig like 3-4 years ago and it was top tier at the time, but considering Hitman is super CPU intensive with hundreds of npcs, I'd probably see a big upgrade in performance from a cpu upgrade.

I think either later this year or early next year I'll just do a whole new rebuild with new cpu/ram/gpu, maybe upgrade my 1080p monitor. What amount of ram is recommended these days? Are we up to 32gb being normal?

8 GB 38.36%
16 GB 33.89%

16GB is A-OK. You don't need more if gaming is the heaviest load. RAM prices are sane again, though, so...

970s are actually a special case. That 3.5gb RAM really didn't age well heh. Even the AMD equivalent card at the time (R9 290) is outperforming it these days. A 1080 or 2060 (non-Super or TI) basically doubles your performance in any game out there and can be had for relatively cheap.

Wait, really?!

I thought the 2060 was basically a a 1070 equivalent. I passed on the 1070 when it came out because it didn’t looked like it was basically the same performance per $ (on the games at launch).

One thing is once a card is sort of old, they tend not to benchmark it anymore, which I find annoying.

Edit: I mostly play PC at 1080P on medium, so that might be why I haven’t really felt the pain of the 970. I have basically still been able to hit 60fps.

Mids Still Selling.

1070 is basically a 980ti equivalent so anything in the 20 series is gonna be a big jump for you. I have a 1070 now and I'm looking at a 2070 as my next upgrade.

If you're playing 1080/60 then I wouldn't rush to upgrade unless you really are dying to play on max settings. But if you have some extra cash during Black Friday and are thinking of an boost a new GPU and 1080/120 monitor would both be great upgrades and you'd see a nice improvement, depending on your other components.

With the gaming performance of the new Ryzens and the new Super Nvidia cards pushing the non-Supers to go on sale for Black Friday if not sooner (plus the 5700xt possibly being legit), this is gonna be the perfect year to build a new PC on a medium budget. Assuming RAM prices stay sane, of course.

the 3.5GB ram is even worse iirc because it's setup in separate 3GB and 512MB ram pools or something stupid like that

we had some discussion at the time before about how if you were looking to buy once for the generation you didn't really want to buy with less than 6GB because the consoles maxed out at 5GB and the cards were already more powerful

when Microsoft announces their next console next year we'll know more about exactly what an upgrade path should look like if ones goal is to keep at that 60fps overpower range

plus there probably shouldn't be a cyptro caused shortage again :doge

Honestly, I can’t really complain too much about the 970. It was solidly faster than the base PS4 for all the games I’ve played on it.

Biggest thing holding me back is that that price point is almost freaking abandoned so I feel like I need a lot more muscle than a normal generational jump to justify it.

I kind of went 970 -> X1X/PS4Pro for 4K, and I’m not sure how interested I am in another upgrade until I can hit a 4K/60 at a reasonable price point.

Anyone doing 1440P/60 on a 4K screen? Does it scale decently? 2070 super has me thinking about it, but those suckers are still really pricy (imo).

Radeon 5700XT is performing at 2070 Super level for $400, just without any raytracing. Once the third party cards hit that may be the GPU you want to look at for good performance at that price range. I believe the first one will be coming out next week so we'll see how the card does with proper cooling.

970 is a 4GB card but 3.5gb is in one pool and 512mb in the other. But I got the card for $350 on sale and another $30 back from the lawsuit over it so for that price it did real well for me (and my wife is currently using the same card in her hand me down PC and it's doing pretty good)
