Too generous for an Ubisoft inspired game :doge

My favourite modern review is the 2/10 Gamespot one for the Spongebob game. The gameplay footage in the review, which I assume is by the reviewer, puts a spotlight on why he has a problem with the game. He can't seem to grasp simple concepts a 5-year old could get to terms with. It's kind of amazing.

Yeah, I can see hardcore collectors not caring and only wanting the original version.  But it seems like this re-release could also cause a lot of people to not care about shelling out so much for it.

How is this a review?

https://www.polygon.com/reviews/2020/7/8/21316347/deadly-premonition-2-review-switch
Quote
When I can finally explore the world and play detective, I’m mostly following directions and clicking on diamond-shaped clues, which prompts the game to solve mysteries about a murdered young woman for me. It’s more of a visual novel than an action or adventure game, and even when it does become an action game, it’s limited to dungeons filled with a single enemy type, at least in the first chapter. But all the game’s action is rote, and none of it inspires enthusiasm.

It's Polygon. What did you expect. Modern game reviewers don't want to play games. They want to hold forward and press square every 20 minutes.

The only reason I still superficially care about reviews is cause they tend to send the industry in directions I absolutely loathe.

Some of you really angry that DP2 isn't getting the same reception as the first. I thought you guys said you don't care about reviews anymore anyways.

Who are you talking about specifically?

It's more so reviewers who are posing as people that get or understand the appeal of Deadly Premonition 1, reviewing the sequel, and saying shit like "the magic from the first game is gone."

The first game ALSO got shit on from the majority of reviewers. "This game is a buggy piece of shit" is fair criticism. "I never played DP1, and I can tell ya, this is worst than the first game, based on it's cult status and shit I glanced over".....that's incredibly shitty criticism.

It's game reviewers pretending to be in the know of a cult classic, playing the sequel they already don't give a fuck about, and then offering  insight that's not meaningful for Deadly Premonition fans.

Jim Sterling is a fat fucking doughsoft basketcase fuckface that spent 12 minutes ranting about  how Swery doesn't understand transsexual people like a true ally does, and how there might be one character that might be racially insensitive.

Jim Sterling would suck Hitler's cock if it got him YouTube views or swayed an audience he wants.

That's great. So if you look at a review that has a low review score and you find that the reasoning behind it seem foolish to you then great. You can discard it.

Pulling up Assassin's Creed glitching out isn't really a  good excuse to say "but you point out really low framerates in DP2?" (I know that was MM and not you Morma). Ass Creed is like Marvel movies. I get that a lot people like them. Not me. So when these games get 85 scores it's not really a big deal cause I know that what those games a re going for isn't really my thing. (for what it's worth I did enjoy the first two games of Ezio's trilogy. And I know what to expect from most Ass Creed games cause "formula". But that's neither here nor there.)

DP is inherently niche. If someone "doesn't get it" then too bad. If the game deserves to be a cult hit again, then the word of mouth will continue. I can't think of too many games that scored in the 60s that I actually think are great. Like actually really enjoy them and not just "hey it wasn't so bad". Nier 1 comes to mind. That's about it for the most part. And that game sort of survived off of the word of mouth. And we all laughed at the Kotaku review of the guy who was fishing in the wrong pond even with a marker pointing out where they should have been to begin with. As such aside from laughing at the review, we understood that it wasn't one worth considering.

Regardless of whether DP2 was going to score in the 80s or not wouldn't make much of a difference in the greater gaming industry. It's a small game. The Nonary Games getting showered with praise hasn't changed anything. Good enough to get PC ports, but 9s and 10s for those games made no industry impact.

So DP2 not cracking into the 70s, if more and more people find it to be better than that, word will get out. Shit I went to look at the various aggregators and it was very all over the place. Some people hated it, some were mild and there were a handful of reviews that gave it 5 stars or 90s scores.

P.S. I never liked Jim Sterling. Not today, not 7 years ago.

Mind you, I get a little pissy at reviews that  seem completely off or are coming from an angle that seems off for the given game.

I think back to the Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door review by Game Informer. In retrospect it's really funny to me now, but still just as bizarre. They gave it 6.75 or whatever not due to the reviewer having issue X or thought that Y was a boring gameplay mechanic. The reasoning was "well I'm a mind reader and I think our readership wouldn't be all that into this game so I'm going to forego any of my personal thoughts and feelings and just try to come up with a reason why I think thousands of our readers think exactly like this."

It was hilariously odd to me even back then.

Anyways, I apologize for my initial comment if it pricked some of you the wrong way. I know we all want to see a game we are hyped for to do well (and frankly not feel like our hype was misplaced haha). Hopefully DP2 does hit the right notes for those who are picking it up at launch. I played through the first one and I enjoyed it enough where if I get the impression the second game is on a similar level I'll snag it down the road for 20 like I did the first one.

Rumor:

Game Rant has got its hands on a supposed promo image showing an apparent upcoming project from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics titled Tomb Raider: The Ultimate Experience.

The art shows off three different generations of Tomb Raider. If accurate, we could be getting a package featuring the original trilogy, games from the latter half of the 2000s, and the most recent entries.

The image alone doesn’t make this official, as there’s no way to confirm currently if it comes from Square Enix or was fan-made. We do see an apparent August 27 release date on the promo piece, so we should be hearing about Tomb Raider: The Ultimate Experience soon if it’s actually real.

Looks really cheap and slapped together, like every aesthetic decision of PS5 so far (except maybe the controller).

Why have the white be completely flat like that? Why keep the blue on the plastic (i assume to save money using PS4 cases?) Why even keep the big case format? It all comes off as very lazy.

Neat little interview with Masayuki Uemara talking about the 70s and 80s

https://kotaku.com/the-designer-of-the-nes-dishes-the-dirt-on-nintendos-ea-1844296906

Quote
Uemura: Super Mario Bros. was the first to really bring a kawaii perspective to game characters. Actually, Donkey Kong was first to do it, in the arcades, and it established that unique sense of design. Until that point, most games followed the arcade style of shooting game design. Super Mario is often cited as the very first game to connect that style of cute character and cute music together. I’m not sure who specifically on Miyamoto’s team connected the dots, but that’s what happened. Probably Miyamoto himself.
