999 has some puzzle stuff mixed in!

honestly, it got me interest in playing other visual novels. I've been meaning to check out Ever17 by the same writer (I think) and that is supposed to be a straight up visual novel with no puzzles.

Heavy Rain was basically a visual movie, if that comment made a lick of sense. And, uh, the reason I liked Alpha Protocol was not unlike a visual novel.

Though, I may be mixing up choose your own adventure visual novels for just reading text and watching animu girls get their creepy pedo bait on.

Visual novels are weird. On one hand they are mostly softcore porn (some hardcore) about loli/moe girls.

Otoh, they are one of the best places for an indie game maker/writer/artist to break into the game industry in Japan, so they tend to have the most creative and batshit crazy plots. This is because if you have a cool story idea in your head, instead of writing a novel, you can make a visual novel and sell it to the gamer/anime crowd.

That's why you get stuff like Higurashi, or Tsukihime, or Air, or all other kinds of interesting plots.

If I didn't hate reading paragraphs and paragraphs of Japanese, I'd try to play more. I really want to read Umineko at some point. The visuals looks so good in 1080p on the PS3 and the story seems interesting.

Go play it. I'm not saying it's the best game ever, but it's quite possible the best GTA-style game ever.

It's all about acknowledging your inner child.

There's bugs and slowdown and assy textures and lockups and blargh, but the love poured into this game clearly shows. What I wouldn't give for a Saints Row with the budget of a mainline GTA (and some QA).

It's honestly probably a better game than the first I would guess without having played it and speaking out of my ass. I just think the hype bubble isn't nearly the same as it was for the 2nd which lead reviewers to be overly generous to it.

I love the weasel words IGN use to leave themselves a way out should things turn sour. They're always talking about a "first person experience" and that the game is awesome for "PS3 shooter fans" and so on. That's a bit too obvious, if you ask me.

Still, there was this neat little story recap video. I appreciate that. Not like there was much of a story to recap.

They only had access to a bit of white noise and some sawtooth/sine wave generators, forcing musicians to concentrate on melody instead of overwhelming the user with whole orchestras bleating at full power.

WotS3 is good, but most of the sidequests are really boring. Game's a mixed bag imo.

I am all for a Halo CE remake though. Halo 1 with GOOD online play would be wonderful, since it's still the best FPS on consoles (just edging out Shadowrun).
