outside of Dragon Age for pc i haven't loved one rpg this generation. emphasis on love.
though I thought tales of vesperia and fallout 3 were great and blue dragon and lost odyssey were pretty good, mass effect 1 was good but highly flawed. But the bulk of those came out years ago. throw in valkyria chronicles, which I think aside from demon's souls is one of the few inventive rpgs of this generation.
None of these games are really doing creative or interesting things, most of them feel canned. The western rpg developers are shying away more and more from traditional rpg design in favor for molding them with other genres, which is totally gay. I wouldn't even call Mass Effect 2 an rpg. dragon age 2 looks as dumbed down as a game sequel can get, nier is boring and its story is lol, oblivion is boring, demon's souls while pretty good really doesn't click and I heart roguelikes and dungeon crawlers which makes no sense, ff13 is mediocrity personified, infinite undiscovery is lol, white knight chronicles is laffo, star ocean 4 is pedobait, I can go on and on.
i think it's pretty telling about the quality of the rpgs being made when a tales of game is ahead of the pack but c'est la vie, you won't like everything. i'll just wait for FF13-2 cross my fingers and toes that it's not shit and pick up Skyrim praying to my hypotethical non-god that it isn't the same boring Elder Scrolls stuff and more in the way of the fallout games. speaking of which, i need to get new vegas.
