I just don't understand the idea that because something is fantasy and features elves and shit it's generic or it's Lord of the Rings' esque. It's the equivalent of saying all space opera is reminiscent to Star Trek.

Since this is Japan, one of the female characters must be dressed skimpy? Check.

According to Magus, Grimgrimoire is (magus buzzword) GENERIC because it features elves, witches and warlocks, fantasy staples. So clearly, it takes place in a generic fantasy setting.

saying "if a game has elves it's generic" it's just a broad generalization but the more fantasy trope you put in it without twisting them in the slighest,the more generic you become

are your elves better,tall,slim and pointy eared?
are your dwarfes small bearded old man with a digging fixation
is at least of 50% of the stuff you fight in the game part of the fantasy axis of evil?

and yes doing stuff like giving them an animu makeover count as "twisting"

Yeah I guess the "typical" fantasy archetypes kinda drain me out, and I'm sure I will possibly enjoy Skyrim once I actually sit down and give it a shot (once I actually find 100+ hours of free time I can spend playing a single game)... I think what I liked in games like The Witcher was they had your typical fantasy tropes but they were all subverted somewhat (like the elves were assholes instead of goody-two-shoes) and it had some grounds in Slavic mythology which was unique. I do prefer animu character design over whatever Bethesda passes for character design though, and I tend to prefer slightly more linear (but not FFXIII/COD level) games than open worlds.

You know I don't care about the east vs. west thing in videogames, but it almost seems like a lot of it is eastern fans getting mad when whatever new military pewpew game comes out and sells gangbusters they rage due to those sale not going to tales of uguuu or what have you. I mean I grew up on japanese videogames and my top games are usually japanese, but the west have surpassed them. And I'm not going to cry over that cause great games are still being made everywhere, and I'd rather buy something cause I like it and not cause I must defend the honor of a country I've never been to.

Like I said, I can't really relate to most of the western games out there, the gameplay styles just don't really work for me... and I hate to see the stuff I actually like not even be viable for release in my native language because they are getting crowded out by more bland military shooters. That's because I'm selfish and have it down to a science what I actually do and don't like as far as games/music/etc goes.

I hear eXceed and Ether Vapor are good. Never played them though. I don't know why one of these companies hasn't picked up Crimzon Clover yet. That game is the pinnacle of doujin development. They could easily sell it standalone on Steam for $15-$20, but maybe Yotsubane is against it or wants too much money or something.

I hope he ends up somewhere with good system/mechanics designers. Ueda does animation well and has a good eye for a strong cohesive aesthetic, but mechanically the team ico games have been lacking. Ico has pretty much nothing going for it in terms of gameplay, though it's pretty fun in co-op. Shadow of the Colossus has good boss encounters, but the game is so god damn gung-ho about the emptiness of the world and it's pacing that it ends up doing it a disservice. SotC is a fun game all things considered, so I'm still excited for The Last Guardian. Even if it ends up being kinda shallow and a one-time kinda thing.

I dunno, I can see Sony firing him for spending 7 year of paid salary with his team and not producing a game.  As much as I love his two games, that's pretty iffy by any standard.  Worse is that TLG doesn't seem anywhere near complete STILL.
