lol Simcity facebook page updated with this piece of shit image acting like it's impressive on any level.

The pr for this game is atrocious.

Yes, I'm going to get excited about a shitty tileset I have pay money for to even enjoy, cocklords. Who in the fuck would be impressed by this shit?

For sake of comparison:

It's pretty obvious that the art direction is intended look like a toy set—the (ugly and otherwise pointless) tilt-shift effect in all the PR shots and videos just solidifies the decision.

But actual city simulation does sound like so much fun.  :zzz

It's the best city-builder since Simcity 4, although that does come across as faint praise.

Other M was pretty bad though.

yes it was pretty mediocre, but hardly the shitstorm that comes up a little now and then. Gameplay vise it had some pretty sweet moments.  Metroid Prime 3 was pretty bad also, but i dont know why that gets a free pass.

MP3 was certainly a far better game than Other M. Even the cutscenes in MP3 were better.

And the backlash was partly because of inflated expectations due to "first Metroid from Japan in years" and "Team Ninja" being carefully punctured by Sakamoto's bizarre design choices and excruciating story.

MP3 tried to be Halo, and it introduced some pretty shittty characters

I guess it was no surprise that the series went back to Japan (which also bombed)

Best thing right now is to put Metroid on ice for a couple of years.

Those characters appeared for all of MAYBE an hour total in 20+ hour game. The other 19+ hours were exploring alien worlds, in basically the same way as all the other Prime games.

eh the exploration was toned down, even the developers themselves admitted that.

I found Metroid Prime 1 & 2 to be excellent games, but the 3rd game is very forgettable.

the hype for SC has been optimistic, not necessarily positive. the hype has been going down the drain since the marketing is awful. the marketing posts shit pics like that guitar pic as if it's in any way impressive and has yet to release one single pic of an actual city with a dense skyline.

People at shows say the game is good, but these are people playing for 15-30 minute session. Will the game last longer than that? Media released so far suggests no. But I'm optimistic about the game.

Still, I'm more interested in trying out Cities XL.

[Update: Gibeau "clarified" what he said to Kotaku by basically repeating what he said originally in a more flowery way. It's barely worth an update but I was getting smarmy messages from smug gimboids about it, so here you go.

"What I said was [about not greenlighting] anything that [doesn't have] an online service. You can have a very deep single-player game but it has to have an ongoing content plan for keeping customers engaged beyond what's on the initial disc. I'm not saying deathmatch must come to Mirror's Edge."

He added that games are to be thought of as services now, and went on to say that you, "need to have a social experience where you're part of a large community." EA knows what you need better than you do, after all.]

Electronic Arts' games label boss Frank Gibeau has revealed that he's not let any solely single-player games pass through his gates, ensuring that absolutely every single title the company publishes has an online component.

"We are very proud of the way EA evolved with consumers," he said. "I have not green lit one game to be developed as a singleplayer experience. Today, all of our games include online applications and digital services that make them live 24/7/365.

"One of our biggest growth opportunities is Play4Free titles that allow customers to play at no cost and make purchases via microtransactions. We see this as a huge opportunity, and one that’s powered by our hybrid cloud model."

With co-op coming to Dead Space 3 and multiplayer rumored for Dragon Age 3, it seems that the idea of solo-oriented experiences is now dead to EA. As is variety, it seems. The inexorable march towards videogames becoming one indistinguishable mass of grey sludge continues.

:piss EA :piss2

I'm not saying it's a bad game overall, it's just a really good RPG made somewhat tedious at times because of being tied to dull MMO tropes. So, yeah, I'd say it's worth playing.
