.

Portal wasn't really screaming for a sequel.  It's the Bioshock thing all over again.
Meanwhile HL2 Ep2 was....

But hey, let's make more L4D games, more Portal games, but not, you know, half-life games, the games that matter.   :maf

Portal was screaming for a sequel though, because the gameplay is fucking awesome, and there's still a lot they can do with the game.  HL2...stories in games...zzzzzzzz

Totally

Despite all the cake is a lie, companion cube, glados, w/e in Portal, it was a puzzle game.  It's like Mirror's Edge a bit, except all the ancillary stuff in Mirror's Edge was ghastly.

But Portal is kinda the perfect example of having a story told through gameplay.  A lot of people like the HL2 stuff where you start around and jump on Eli's head as he tells you about Alex, but even that feels like goofy and restrictive.  Portal had amazing consistency between story and gameplay because they never took away abilities you've learned or artificially stopped your progress.

you know why a sequel is needed? because if it's done properly, it'll make the entirety of the first game seem like a training exercise.

I'd have to agree there.  There so many concepts that they can flesh out.  Also the first was pretty short, so the more the merrier.

All the potential that is there for Portal?

Yeah, to merge it with HL2 Ep3.  That was the next evolution of Portal, to bring it into real world levels and mix it with combat scenarios.  Between the original Portal, the challenge rooms, the user made puzzle levels, the Portal puzzle formula has been done.  A lot of people were hoping that Portal 2 would just be HL2 ep3 which would feature puzzle elements streamlined into the rest of the adventure.  That seemed like the best course of action to keep both franchises fresh.

But who knows, maybe Portal 2 will be real world stages with combat.  I mean if it's a "full-priced" game, there's a decent chance it won't just be puzzle rooms.

I remember that mod that let you play HL2 with the Portal gun, and if you used it on an enemy, it would totally break their AI or something like that.  If they can have Portal based combat that works, it could be cool.  Or it could be like the episode of Spider-Man where he fought the spot guy who could open portals anyway.  Someone shoots you, open a portal in front of you with the exit pointing at his back.

Coming this holiday. Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Game of the Year and draws from the award-winning formula of innovative game play, story, and music that earned the original over 70 industry accolades. Features single and multiplayer co-op modes. The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game. The game’s two-player cooperative mode features its own entirely separate campaign with a unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters. This new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals. Success will require them to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively.

I liked it on the 360.  You don't have to be super accurate with the game.

HL2 on the 360 felt straight clunky though.  and that aiming reticule is awful.

The Steam announcement is really short. I can imagine Valve was sitting laughing at our pathetic speculation, and then someone came in the room and said "Uh guys, GameInformer just announced Portal 2" Complete silence for a few seconds and then everyone scrambled to their desks.

:lol

GI busted Valve.

Because Gamestop/Game Informer HATES Valve.

I've had a Gamestop manager tell me he was going to report me to anti-piracy authorities for talking about Steam "because downloading games is illegal"

Besides when Portal got REAL GOOD it was the last level already and the whole game ended.

They can make SO MUCH more with it. I hope Portal 2 delivers!

I don't know what to say. I've bought the Orange Box and liked Portal. But I don't really need a sequel. Portal is basically a glorified flash game.

I'd rather want Episode 3 with the portal gun.

You should give it a shot. It may have been overhyped, but at the time it was a fresh idea: the puzzle FPS. It's like someone just jammed two marketing terms together and made gold. The writing is funny too, and I bet there will be a few jokes you might not have even heard 20 times on internet forums.

Quick summary,not done by me
Quote
- Portal was a 'trial'. Size and assets specifically kept minimal. Had no idea it would be this popular.
- Portal was a 'test bed', Portal 2 is a 'game'.
- GlaDOS returns as the antagonist.
- Chell returns, and we play as her.
- Portal 2 takes place a long time after the original. Hundreds of years, in fact. The complex has overgrown.
- Those orbs seen at the end of Portal are personality orbs. They've cornered off sections of the labs as their own, and are concerned about the decaying state of the complex.
- The opening sounds **** awesome. Im a bit **** I spoiled it for myself.
- Portal gun remains unchanged.
- Physics will now be part of portal puzzle solving. EG: A vent that sucks air in can be combined with a portal to 'suck' from a different location.
- "Paint" mechanic, various liquid substances that cause some reaction. For example, in the demo shown a orange substance on the floor caused Chell to be propelled upwards. Using portals you can apply these 'paints' to other areas of the level for puzzle solving.
- Reflection cubes will allow Chell to reflect lazers for various puzzles.
- The co-op campaign will have you playing as two bipedal robots. They like to hold hands.
- Splitscreen for people playing on the console, and 'picture in picture' available for those playing remote co-op (eg: PC). This allows you to easily communicate with the other player and combine efforts for puzzle solving.

Yes, if you ignore TF2 and its numerous additions, L4D1/2 with its numerous modes and customization.

What exactly is a full lengthed game? Games aren't movies or books, a 3 hour game is a full-lengthed game, and that's not even bringing up the multiple modes and difficulties.

Himuro I don't care how much you love Valve, I probably love them more. I literally own every game Valve has published, bought and paid for, and some I've bought more than once. Rising to the defense of them when it comes to this shit is promoting their bullshit behavior.

When I say full-length I mean exactly what Half Life 2 is. A complete single-player experience with a cohesive plot that starts and ends within the length of the game.

Valve has confessed that Portal was not a full game, it was a risk that they spent very little money on and packaged with other games to test out.

I didn't say I love Valve in that post. I'm merely being realistic.

Honestly 4 hours is all I need for a good game so long as the pacing is tight.

Also, Half Life 2 was too long. Half Life episode 1/2 length please.

I honestly don't complain about this with anybody but Valve. Even Blizzard rarely puts out a release date/window and then delays it. They just take a long time to announce the release of a game. That I can respect, take your time.

But don't promise a date, delay it, be smug about it, and delay it again sometime down the road. That's serious bullshit.
