See, now this is the kind of think I thing about when I think "anime". Stuff that's just insane and awesome. Not boring garbage like Kissxsis and B Gata H Kei. Even most of the good shows this season don't seem nearly as awesome as that trailer. MAKE MORE OF THIS, JAPAN.

Madhouse also animated Tatami Galaxy. :rock

A two-dimensional, "ordinary teenager" is molested on a daily basis by his two one-dimensional sisters, who are not really his sisters [he's adopted], because they absolutely ADORE every single thing about him and want to have sex with him. Hijinks ensue.

It sounds crazy, but the end result is a fan-service fest filled with vapid characters and vapid humor. Basically, the amalgamation of everything currently wrong with anime.

Redline was in development for over half a decade, finally being released several years later than originally planned. Given that it's the directorial debut feature of Takeshi Koike (key animator on The Animatrix, Dead Leaves and Samurai Champloo, and director of the short OVA Trava – Fist Planet) it seems slightly unusual that MADHOUSE allowed the production to drag on for so long, and presumably swallow up a hefty budget. All of which begs one obvious question – was it all worth it?

The simple answer is a resounding yes. Whatever you might think of MADHOUSE's creative and economic risk taking with Redline, there's no denying that for the film's entire 100-minute runtime you are watching something very special, very different, and insanely exhilarating.

For a start, Redline looks like nothing you've seen before. It's easy to see that Koike is a huge fan of western graphic art, and has been influenced as much by French comic artist Jean ‘Moebius’ Giraud (possibly best known for his design work on The Fifth Element), the US animated film Heavy Metal, cult UK sci-fi comic 2000 AD, and even the Star Wars movies as much as he has by the likes of Katsuhiro Otomo, Hiroyuki Imaishi or Leiji Matsumoto. Not that Redline feels or looks like a mash-up of different styles – somewhere in the visual chaos it unrelentingly throws at its audience it becomes something that is far more than the mere sum of parts, a unique piece of animation that at times doesn't even feel like anime in the traditional sense.

Take the character designs for a start – the film feels like it is crammed with literally a cast of thousands of extras, all of different alien races and species. In fact it's only really JP and his love interest Sonoshee that appear to be baseline humans here, meaning that they are the only characters designed in a ‘traditional’ anime style, and are vastly outnumbered by the freakish and unusual looking. The same goes for the mechanical and set designs – there's little here that is reminiscent of a traditional anime production. Instead everything – buildings, vehicles, spacecraft, the Roboworld military's insane planet wrecking weapon systems – all seem warped out of scale, hideously impractical and with the apparent ability to be twisted and stretched out of shape despite how solid they might first appear.

It's amongst this onslaught of graphic insanity that Redline accomplishes something truly surprising. Somehow, without the audience realising it, Koike has managed to make all this chaos believable. Perhaps through the pure density of detail or just knowing when to pull in the reigns slightly, he makes everything from the busy alien crowd scenes to the full-throttle, explosive race sequences seem like events in a real, tangible world. Exactly how he manages to pull this off is impossible to work out after just one viewing, and may never be revealed fully, but it does seem to hint that Redline is the work of a genuine genius.

Not that everyone will love this film – it could be that some will be put off by its soundtrack, comprised almost purely of high-octane, scratch-mixed techno. It might not be to everyone's taste, but it fits the film's visuals beat-perfectly, and it's hard to imagine any other style of music doing the job as well. Some critics are going to look at the film's minimal plot and decry it as ‘style over content’, but to do so will be to reveal themselves as not even within driving distance of the point. Redline is animation not only at its best, but also largely animation for animation's sake – not a story that had to be made in anime form to due to budgetary restrictions, but a story that could only exist in this medium. It is experimental, challenging and most importantly exhilarating in its artistic style in ways that most works could not even dream of reaching through script writing or thematic devices.

There will probably also be some more conservative anime fans that just won't get Redline, that will look at it's unconventional character designs and over the top action sequences and see something they don't consider to be anime. And that's fine, because ironically what will be turning them off is exactly what gives Redline the potential to be a huge cross-over hit – its unique blend of art, music and groundbreaking animation sure to pick up fans from outside the scene, as well as making it potentially one of the most daring and important anime movies for a very, very long time.

Overall : A+
Story : B+
Animation : A+
Art : A+
Music : A

+ This is the most insanely exciting, visually exhilarating anime film you've seen in decades. Incredible fun.
− It's so good it seems to be all over in about 10 minutes. You don't own the bluray yet.

The characters look like they are all 10 years old.  Junpei WTF?

Don't judge me. They don't look that young.  :(

High School of the Dead,Mago,Occult show,Shiki, and Ookamisan(Cuz one of the main characters looks JUST LIKE Taiga from Toradora) all seem interesting.

I really like Liar Game. Very interesting, all of the explanations are rather long but it's cool. I like that Nao went from super duper guillble/naive/trusting to mostly gullible/naive/trusting. She's getting smarter about everything, nice character development. All the characters are pretty nice. I recommend it if you like "THIS IS HOW I DID THIS!" type manga. Plus Fukunaga  :heartbeat

Why so surprised at that list, Junpei?  Women draw all kinds of manga too...from the shonen boys' manga to hentai.

I've been watching B Gata H Kei (which I think could be loosely translated to "B-Cup Slut"  :lol) with my wife.  She loves the jokes.  As soon as I watched the first episode, it was pretty obvious it had to be made by a woman.  Those of you who were put off by the description "Yamada wants to get 100 fuck buddies," don't take it literally.  It's a joke.  It's basically a gag anime about a high school girl who is trying to be miss popular and wants to fuck some dudes to secure her position "at the top," but she's a virgin and has no idea about anything, and sets her sights on some joe-average type she runs into by mistake.  The other characters are either her friends or her "rivals," the latter being another similarly-delusional girl who is even more fucked up than she is sexually.  It doesn't really have nudity or sex though; it's more about the hilarity stemming from Yamada trying to goad her would-be boyfriend into doing stuff with her, and either failing miserably or him/her just not having a clue.  She is a bitch and her friends/"boyfriend" are all good people, but oddly that is part of the series' charm.

Oh, and I have no idea what the hell is up with the sub group (Coalguys)-- the last episode I watched (seven, I think) was full of weird net-slang that really didn't fit, or just shit they made up.  There's a part where a mother asks if the kids want watermelon, and they say "haaaaaaaaaaaaai!!"  The subs said "AWWWWWW SHIT!!"   :lol  Another part had a female character telling the male that she made some fried chicken, but the subs said "I bought some KFC."   :wtf

I finished watching Trapeze and the show ended up being 10x better than I would have thought from the so-so first episode.

The pairing of interesting people with interesting personality disorders led to some great episodes like the Yakuza guy who has an OCD fear of sharp objects.  Or the teen is addicted to his cell phone.  Or the reporter who always has an irrational fear that his house is on fire.  Lots of enjoyable episodes.

Then the 2nd to last ep about the newspaper/baseball_team owner was actually a legitimately good piece of drama.  Powerful good stuff.
The final ep was ok, but the end that closed up the series was nice.

Thumbs up, would recommend.

I mentioned this before, but I'm going to do it again. I'm 30 chapters in and it's one of my favorite comedy mangas...ever, maybe. It's just absolutely hysterical. It's a bit like School Rumble, in a way, but far, FAR better. The characters, the situations and how the characters react to them, and the reactions themselves [particularly extreme, Loony Toons-esque faces], it's all really good.

Oh crazy, didn't notice but the Vesperia movie came out on bd/dvd in Japan yesterday.

I hope this is good and not terrible & boring like the Tales OAVs.  At least this is done by Production IG and they are sometimes good?  ^^;  Yuri/Flynn prequel sounds promising if they don't screw it up.

I can't believe i just realized  what Hi-Nu Gundam looked like.

and its awesome  :o

Normal Nu officially de-ranked as my one of my Favorite MS in UC gundam

Hi-Nu is smaller than the regular Nu...once I realized that, it suddenly seemed just a little less cool. :(

MY RANKINGSSSSSSSSs

1. F91
2. Nu Gundam
3. Turn A
4. RX-78-2
5. Wing Zero Custom
PS4

Vesperia movie is amazingly boring like the Tales OAVs  :-\

Why is it so hard to turn animu into anime.  Tales games are not slow & boring!

Just saw Bastard!!

So it was all violence, tits and heavy metal references. Which spells awesome for me. Sure I hated the anime cliche's and the evil laughs were horrible, but damn if that wasn't entertaining. I hate Yoko and that little kid Lushe, but Dark Shneider was awesome and Gara was the definition of badass.

Too bad they only made 6 episodes out of 8, would have loved another two episodes.

I want to say that the manga, which started in the 80's, is still on-going and is only in the 20+ volume range because the writer/artist just can't release anything on any kind of regular schedule.

EDIT: Yup, started in *1988* and currently on volume 26.   :lol

Was in the mood for some good ol' ultraviolent, futuristic cyber cop, horribly dubbed 90s anime and stumbled on this:

Watching it tonight!

Trapeze sounds interesting.

Well is it any good? And why is he not releasing it regularly?

it rox

and he has a quality issue. Bastard has better drawings and art than most manga, so it's not a regular weekly manga.
