Movie suggestions?
« on: December 19, 2006, 07:26:29 PM »
I've wanted to get more into movies lately but I don't know where to start. After seeing that top American movies list PD posted in Cheebs' thread I realized I had more catching up to do than I thought.

I'm going to set up a Netflix account and rent a few movies suggested from that list and from certain people on this forum who obviously know a bit about movies (Willco, Cheebs, Triumph, Solo, Mupepe).

The time period the movie was made really shouldn't matter, should it? I still enjoy really old movies. In fact, just a month ago I saw Singing in the Rain for the first time and absolutely loved it. I am also an avid John Wayne fan, so I 'm used to old movies.

It'd be nice to broaden my horizons in terms of movies I think. Let a rip, people!

Quentin Tarantino
Terry Gilliam

Those are my favorite directors, in any case.

I've seen everything by Quentin with the exception of Jackie Brown and I've loved every one of them.

I have wanted to see Seven Samurai for awhile. Hmm.

Jackie Brown is an incredible film, and Seven Samurai... words can't describe it, so... :hyper

Just be prepared for the nearly four hour runtime.

I never understood that. Just because it takes place during the times of Jesus it is anti-Christian?  :lol Jesus only has a small cameo in it and his only line is from the bible.

I mean come on this is EASILY one of the top film moments in history:

Well, I haven't seen it, so I can't say. My dad says the same about The Last Temptation of Christ. Basically if the movie has any religious themes to it and it's not based on scripture it's sacrilegious.

So what you're saying is that one of the Wayans brothers should get similar nods for that recent movie?

Clifford was one of the most obnoxious films I ever was witness to.

Film is very subjective.  Your best shot is to try a smorgasboard, see what genres and directors you like best and then go on an all-out splurge once you realize what genre/directors your tastes cater to.  Film is too large and too broad to simply try everything simply because people call them classics.  It'd be a waste of your time when you could be watching stuff you'd like to see rather than watching stuff everyone likes to see.

I can already tell you that my favorite part of movies are the drama, the characters, their relationships. I'd say Drama is my favorite genre, although that genre is too broad and covers many sub genres I'd imagine. If a movie has good characterization, I am able to look past most of it's flaws.

Example of why I never get around to watching movies:

I've been hearing tons of good shit about The Wire (HBO show) and I've been thinking about picking it up or downloading it. I talked to my friend tonight and he was like, "Yea, it's my favorite show, I watched the last two seasons." So I'm like fuck it, let's have a Wire marathon or something, I'll buy the first season. BAM, I bought the first season and we watched 2 episodes tonight and will watched a shitload more tomorrow. I'm pretty addicted after just two episodes.

TV shows on DVD >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TV shows on TV.  Fuck, I hate having to wait til the next week.

I see it as a double edged sword. Waiting till the next increases excitement and makes watching the shows much funner I think, however, I do think that waiting for the next episode can be torture in of itself.

I watch my favorite shows on tv, buy the dvds when they're out, and rent shows I missed the previous season, and if I like them I continue to watch the next season.

I think watching TV shows over time gives you more overall satisfaction. With shows on DVD, you can just rip through a season in a few days and forget about it. When you watch a season over its entire run on television, you think about it, you can talk about it with other people - it's fun. The only good reasons I watch 24 anymore are because a lot of my friends watch it and the weekly threads in GAF are always entertaining.
