Yeah, actually engaging with people watching the same show at the same time is apart of half the fun. You don't get that with dvd releases.

Im hardly gonna recommend EVERY movie you should see according to me, because my life would be over by the time I finished. What I will do is list 10 of my favorite directors and 3 films you NEED to see from them. So 30 recommendations, including my top 5 movies.

(Alphabetical)

Hitchcock, Alfred:
- Rear Window (1954)
- Vertigo (1958) (my #3 film ever)
- North By Northwest (1959)

Kubrick, Stanley:
- The Killing (1956)
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) (my #3 film ever)
- The Shining (1980)

Kurosawa, Akira:
- Seven Samurai (1954)
- Throne Of Blood (1957)
- Ran (1985)

Leone, Sergio: (Solo's fav director)
- For A Few Dollars More (1965)
- The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966) (my #1 film ever)
- Once Upon A Time In The West (1968)

Lumet, Sidney:
- 12 Angry Men (1957)
- Serpico (1973)
- Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

Mann, Michael:
- Heat (1995)
- The Insider (1999)
- Collateral (2004)

Park, Chan-wook:
- Joint Security Area (2000)
- Oldboy (2003) (my #5 film ever)
- Sympathy For Lady Vengeance (2005)

Scorsese, Martin:
- Mean Streets (1974)
- Taxi Driver (1976) (my #4 film ever)
- The Departed (2006)

Scott, Ridley:
- Alien (1979)
- Blade Runner (1982)
- Kingdom Of Heaven DC (2005)

Young, Terence:
- Dr. No (1962)
- From Russia With Love (1963)
- Thunderball (1965)

Definately check out all Leone's films. There will never be another filmmaker like him  :'( R.I.P.

The same way one doesn't like any piece of art. Like Willco said, its all subjective. Clockwork never connected with me, and it feels almost sophomoric/amateurish for a Kubrick film. I get the feeling its the type of movie film students love to wank over. Which really surprises me, because I consider at least 3-4 of Kubrick's other films undeniable masterpieces.

Well, perhaps you folk can enlighten me as to why I am wrong, and why you find Clockwork a great film. Musical selections and Kubrick's unmatched technical prowess aside, I find nothing that resonates with me.

Well, the musical selection and Kubrick's technical prowess ARE two very important factors. Other than that, I just love the story, and especially the character of Alex. Its just an extraordinarily imaginative film that was way, way ahead of its time. :-*

So tonight I went to blockbuster to find Seven Samurai. No dice, they didn't have it. The lady at the register hadn't even fucking heard of it. I went to Best Buy and found a boxset. 40 fucking bucks for one movie. Goddamit.

I ended up with Animaniac's volume 1 instead.

If blockbuster actually had the movies I want there wouldn't be a problem. There's just too many dvds to buy. Whenever I go get a dvd I don't know what the hell I want: a tv series or a movie. It is torture going to Best Buy, I swear.

I got a Blockbuster gift card. I'm HOPING they atleast have fucking Citizen Kane.

I don't think most rental chains have criterion's and a good chunk of the classics are criterion dvd's. If you want to be a film buff you gotta just handle having to pay 40-50 for a classic sometimes.

Don't get Citizen Kane. It's a landmark film in terms of technical filmmaking, and its astoundingly ahead of its time in that regard. As entertainment though, its possibly the most disappointing of all the classics Ive seen.

I lump classics into either "lived up/surpassed the hype" or "didnt meet expectations". Kane is one of the ones that falls into the latter category for me. If you want a classic worth its billing from that era, get Casablanca.

Casablanca is much more entertaining and funny, features better writing, acting, and gets where its going faster. Oh, and its routinely near or at the top of "greatest ever" lists. All of which Spidey 2 is not.

I second Solo's nomination of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.  It's amazing.  I think Taxi Driver and A Clockwork Orange are quite possibly the most overrated films of all-time, but Casablanca lives up to its billing and Chinatown is ace.  Easily one of my favorites of all-time.

For what its worth, I also consider "The Trio" scene, from start to finish, to be the best scene in film history. Everything from the way Leone builds the tension, to the kinetic editing, to the rapid-fire cuts from long shots to extreme close-ups, and especially Morricone's score is absolutely perfect. I watch that scene pretty much weekly.

It's the whole package. But yeah, Morricone's work on Leone's films was godly. Leone's films were godly (save for A Fistful Of Dynamite, and various cuts of Once Upon A Time In America).

Which is why it always angers me to see one of these "best trilogy?" threads pop up, because without a doubt, people ALWAYS ignore the BEST one, the Dollars trilogy.

A Fistful Of Dollars (1964)
For A Few Dollars More (1965)
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966)

Its a loose trilogy at best, with Eastwood's character being the only link between films (and even his name changes in each one), and Lee Van Cleef playing a role in 2 different films. All 3 are fuckawesome.

Technically, The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly is a prequel anyways.

And A Fistful Of Dollars is a remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo. A remake which (calling Willco!) bests the original.
