The refs suck but they haven't doomed the Suns. Poor defense and a reliance on jump shots has.

The problem with the NBA is that players and teams can't suddenly start playing defense if they don't already have reps for playing tough D.  If Amare starts playing physical D like KG or Artest, he'd have 3 fouls in the 1st quarter.  Like I said before, why even enforce no-contact rules in the regular season if the refs won't blow their whistles in the playoffs?  Either let the game be played rough or don't but just be consistent throughout the whole year, including playoffs.

It's reason #5695 why the NBA sucks.

NBA playoffs suck

Blame the AAU and NCAA also.  Not enough coaching in the former and too much coaching in the latter.  Both are terrible in grooming players to be pros.

Wow, Suns finally have a lead at half-time.

The only chance that the Suns have at winning is if Kobe decides that he doesn't want to share the glory with Gasol.  The Suns were successful in the past at goading Kobe into playing hero.  This series would be a lot more interesting if the Suns could do it again.

Is there a NBA rule for a minimum of five seconds on the shotclock for a tip? They just added four seconds to the shotclock on a jump ball that happened with 1 second left.

edit: ah, yes

•   The 24-second clock shall remain the same as when play was interrupted or reset to 5 seconds, whichever is greater, any time on jump balls retained by the offensive team as the result of a held ball caused by the defense.

Blame the AAU and NCAA also.  Not enough coaching in the former and too much coaching in the latter.  Both are terrible in grooming players to be pros.

When I played AAU, the coaches would basically let the top tier players do whatever they wanted for fear of losing them to another team. The scene consists of a bunch of asshole kids and their enablers. Then they go to college and get some basic rules but ultimately they're still the big men on campus for the one year they're there.

My problem with the playoffs has more to do with the set up though. Seven game series rake in money, but they rarely seem to result in dramatic, good series. There's no reason for the first round to be seven games. 3 games is fine, or 5. Save game 7s for the finals.

I'm tired of inconsistent officiating but that's not going to change anytime soon.

Completely agree.  Fuck seven game series early.
Yeah I take back everything good I might have said about the NBA. NCAA wins. I think that Bulls/Celtics series from last year had me believing that maybe the new generation of teams wasn't totally hopeless, but that's clearly not the case.

GAF thread: KOBE! KOBE! KOBE! TRADE THE REST OF THE TEAM!

reality: Phil Jackson is overrated. Eight quarters of zone D and you can not adjust? You don't get Pau touches? Still can't figure out how to defend a pick n roll?

The Suns were trash in LA, so I expect the Lakers to blow them out at home again. The one thing LA should worry about is that Nash has been relatively quiet. He's missed open shots. If he starts hitting his normal percentage and Phil is still struggling to D a pick n roll then its Fuuuuu for you.

I'm pretty mad about gm 5 in Orlando. The Celtics showed up to play (as did Orlando), but what should have been a thrilling, highly competitive game ended up a fucking mess of fouls and techs, with the Celtics forced to play undersized bench scrubs against the Orlando starters. The Celts ended up with 2 players getting concussions out of that. Orlando was playing well enough to beat the Cs anyway, but it would have been nice to let the players decide it, not the refs. How come every ref was watching Dwight Howard's elbow against the Bucks and the Hawks, but once the Magic are down 3 zip to the Celtics, he can start clobbering everyone who comes within 6 feet and not get called on it? The whole thing was a disgrace.

Agreed, especially with the Magic. Seemed like the Suns were just getting beaten on the road by a better team, but the Magic losing two home games really shocked/disappointed me.

Semi-agree. Both Magic and Suns have obviously brought it big-time in the last 2 games. But I never got the impression that the Suns were quitting when they lost the first two games, just that they were being beat by the better team, which had far superior size. The Magic on the other hand - they were the favorites but they outright quit in gm 3 at least (and choked away gm 2). I thought the Cs had their number at that point. So all credit to whatever and whoever got them back on track. Doesn't fully excuse their giving away that gm 3 though.

Still, the Magic have another 5-7 yrs of championship contention ahead of them, they'll figure it out even if they fall short this year.

Seriously though, I detest pretty much everyone on the Celtics except for Ray Allen, so I'd be thrilled to see them become the first team ever to choke away a 3-0 lead.

But the reffing yesterday really was pretty embarrassing

It's easy to get your wish when you rig the game by ordering the Refs to make calls in the Lakers favor.

Again:
Quote
The 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings presents a stunning example of game and series manipulation at its ugliest. As the teams prepared for Game 6 at the Staples Center, Sacramento had a 3–2 lead in the series. The referees assigned to work Game 6 were Dick Bavetta, Bob Delaney, and Ted Bernhardt. As soon as the referees for the game were chosen, the rest of us knew immediately that there would be a Game 7. A prolonged series was good for the league, good for the networks, and good for the game. Oh, and one more thing: it was great for the big-market, star-studded Los Angeles Lakers.

In the pregame meeting prior to Game 6, the league office sent down word that certain calls — calls that would have benefitted the Lakers — were being missed by the referees. This was the type of not-so-subtle information that I and other referees were left to interpret. After receiving the dispatch, Bavetta openly talked about the fact that the league wanted a Game 7.

"If we give the benefit of the calls to the team that's down in the series, nobody's going to complain. The series will be even at three apiece, and then the better team can win Game 7," Bavetta stated.

As history shows, Sacramento lost Game 6 in a wild come-from-behind thriller that saw the Lakers repeatedly sent to the foul line by the referees. For other NBA referees watching the game on television, it was a shameful performance by Bavetta's crew, one of the most poorly officiated games of all time.

The 2002 series certainly wasn't the first or last time Bavetta weighed in on an important game. He also worked Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals between the Lakers and the Trail Blazers. The Lakers were down by 13 at the start of the fourth quarter when Bavetta went to work. The Lakers outscored Portland 31–13 in the fourth quarter and went on to win the game and the series. It certainly didn't hurt the Lakers that they got to shoot 37 free throws compared to a paltry 16 for the Trail Blazers.
