Turkish granddads swear on kefir. I've had it a couple of times and liked it well enough. Actually drinkable, unlike buttermilk.

Ya habibi, don't be a kafir and drink your kefir.

Proper Kefir? Because what's sold in supermarket here doesn't have much in common with real Kefir I imagine.

Unlikely, unless Müller makes 'real' Kefir. Turkish supermarkets will probably have the good stuff though.

I think normal stores don't have real Kefir because the fermentation would lead to bulged lids.

I drank Kefir for a while because it's supposed to be healthy, until I learned that 'mild' Kefir doesn't have any of those benefits, you have to make it yourself if you want real Kefir I think. Stillm the supermarket Kefir is tasty.

I wonder which is worse: management fiction, Sonic furfiction complete with drawings on deviantart, or Amazon self-published vampire fiction.
Having read "The Oz Principle" and "Who moved my cheese" I think it's pretty damned conclusive that Sonic furfiction is way less offensive to the soul.

That's actually not the worst of those cities in the LA Metropolitan Area.

I know there's lots of other favorites people throw out like Bell.

But for me, the king is Vernon. Because not only did it combine the corruption of public officials of Bell with the lack of actual residents of Industry but it added the time honored dynastic family ownership factor in which everyone living in the city was a government employee of multiple jobs and also of the same family except for like two cops. And all houses in the city are owned by the city. And they built their own damn power plant because of electricity rate disputes. The wiki entry doesn't do it justice but is good enough for now: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon,_California

Quote
Most of the city's less than 90 voters are city employees or connected to city employees who live in homes rented at a nominal fee. In 1979 a firefighter tried to run for mayor and was immediately evicted and told he couldn't run. In 2006 a group of outsiders tried to move into Vernon and run for office. The city tried to cancel their registrations but was ordered to allow them to run and to count the ballots. Almost none of the city employees voted for them. Leonis Malburg, the mayor for fifty years, was convicted of voter fraud, conspiracy, and perjury in December 2009. In May 2011, the former city administrator Bruce Malkenhorst, Sr., accepted a plea deal for misappropriating $60,000 in public funds.[22]

In 2006, a controversy arose concerning a few people who moved into Vernon and ran for city council. This marked the first time in more than two decades that there was a competitive race for city council. In 2006, eight people converted a 1950s era office building into a five-room apartment (the building had previously been used as a tanning facility turning sheepskin into billiard/pool pockets), and three of them filed to run for office. The city responded by cutting off their power and moving to evict them as illegal squatters.[23] The City of Vernon alleged that the men were part of a hostile takeover attempt by convicted felon Albert Robles, who nearly bankrupted the nearby city of South Gate as treasurer and Eduardo Olivo a former Vernon attorney who also worked with Albert T. Robles, in South Gate.
Quote
On November 15, 2006, the investigation into public corruption charges in Vernon resulted in charges being filed against the city's mayor, Leonis Malburg, as well as his wife, his son, and the former city administrator. The Los Angeles District Attorney's office had launched an investigation in April 2005 upon allegations that the city's former administrator, Bruce Malkenhorst, Sr., had misappropriated public funds for personal use.

Their investigation uncovered evidence of voter fraud on the part of the ruling family, which, it was asserted, tried to keep out new residents. Leonis Malburg, who has been mayor for 50 years, claimed he lived in a small Vernon apartment in the 2800 block of Leonis Boulevard (named after his grandfather, also a mayor), when in fact he was living in upscale Hancock Park, Los Angeles. His wife and son also claimed to live in Vernon, voting in Vernon elections though evidence indicated they too lived in Hancock Park. Charges against the Malburgs include voter fraud, assisting unqualified voters, false registration, and perjury.[16]

Malkenhorst Sr. was charged with 18 counts of "misappropriation of public funds" for reportedly taking $60,000 of city money for personal use. His salary from the city had been $600,000. Malkenhorst is still collecting his pension of $499,674.84.[24] In 2010, Malkenhorst received a reported $510,000 annual pension, plus health benefits, as former city administrator,[25] and is the number one person of the 9,111 retired California government workers receiving the highest pensions in excess of $100,000 from CalPERS.[24] Malkenhorst retired in 2005.

Industry had a king (Jim Stafford). I mean this is a sort shot / hang thing, but Stafford's racket made a farce out of the California Redevelopment Agency.

It's a bit too pop history, but Victor Valle wrote a pretty thorough history of the place.

On a related note, in the PCL's heyday Vernon had a team (the Tigers) because it was one of the few wet areas in the Southland. Vernon with a close to professional sports team. :dead.

I've been having some privacy issues lately that I hope I didn't kvetch about here and yesterday I narrowed down the possible causes to something I have no control over and my financial institution, which I like but has certain vulnerabilities that are my fault and is staffed by people who aren't suspicious enough.

Anyway, I like the place but needed to do something about this so I set up a web of ersatz variable interest entities that are American Express cards and (direct) bank accounts.

Big companies use a proxy and you can only browse "accepted web pages" deemed work related. We used to have one, but it became a huge hassle with the amount of requests to white list pages.

I know work related stuff is pretty narrow, but do you really need to stream porn or torrent on your work machine?

There's a client who has two Surface Pros- not sure why.  He'll call from time to time and ask for stuff to be done on both of them.  An analyst was working on one of them and the guy said he'd be doing something on the other.  Suddenly there's a female voice going "OH OHHHH OHHHH FUCK ME OOOHHH SHIT", followed by dead silence.   "Doing something," indeed.  So after that, everyone wondered if the reason why the guy has two PCs is so he can jerk off while on the phone with us.

I was walking today and two old drunk ethnic black dudes in front of me were talking an one was like 'Have you ever had per-ooooo-gies? I like those.'  :lol

I also saw a racoon in a tree today.  I had never seen one in the wild I don't think.

Dear clients,

You're supposed to be smart, right?  I mean not just any idiot can hold the jobs that you do.

So can you please explain why you're too fucking stupid to be able to tell when you've received spam/phishing Email?  Do you really think that the link to http://lolfuckyougivemeyourcredentialsidiot.ru is a for Google Docs?

:dead

At least hold off on trying to log onto the site.

I preface this by acknowledging that I only approach "cool" in high stress situations, but bangers on cruiser bicycles are pretty kings of the dorks.

Rider could be packing more heat than a belligerent in the Syrian Civil War (and this being Unistat that's more than a remote possibility) and they'd still look like utter dorks.

It's always "I was lost and my life sucked and then I found God"
It's never "Everything was fucking awesome and then I found God"

I guess Kanye truly is a God then, cause only losers stan him by choice.

I don't really follow sports so I'm assuming most people have heard of him already, but I just learned about Earl Manigualt from a mixtape I've been listening to.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Earl was reportedly able to touch the top of the backboard to retrieve quarters and dollar bills, part of "elaborate innovations and tricks" elite street players of the era performed before games to help build their reputations.[4] He was only 6'1", but wore ankle weights constantly during practice as a child which he credits with helping him build up tremendous jumping ability, the efficacy of which has since been disproven.[5] He once dunked two-handed during a game from near the foul line over two players much taller than himself (Sahil Muliyil 6'8", David Urenda 6'9").[4] He once reverse dunked 36 times in a row to win a $60 bet.[6]

 :gladbron

The way these kinds of stories illuminate the extent of human ability make it easy for me to see the appeal of athleticism in general.  I just wish I didn't find most sporting events so damn boring.
