Just got back from Portland. Random thoughts:
-Brick old buildings everywhere. Reminds me of the northeastern cities like Boston or upstate NY. Neat stuff.
-Once you get about 20-30 miles outside the city, I can't tell the difference between Oregon and Alaska. Very beautiful scenic wilderness with houses mixed between. I could totally live outside the city.
-People were more nice than I'd read, but still not particularly friendly. About 50% of the time I initiated basic small talk when say buying coffee "How's your day so far?", the other person would be like shocked and not sure how to respond or mumble something really quick.
-And they still blame Californian's for everything. While there I heard a conversation about how Californian's moving up to Oregon caused all the traffic that exists in Portland, and another conversation where Californian's moving to Oregon have made everything expensive for Portland people.
-The average person I saw in downtown seemed to be about age 25-30 couple with a baby stroller. Definitely seemed like a place where young people settle down and have families.
-Food and sights were good, Powell's was legit, Portland makes really good ice cream and chocolates.
-Downtown was kind of ok? Like nothing really stands out about it to me. It's not bad, not amazing.
-Barcades when you're not drinking are just really old boring arcades. But Pinball's always fun.
-Hasn't sold out yet. When I visited downtown Seattle like 6+ years ago I loved the stereotypical grunge-era never left feel mixed with unique mom & pop coffee shops on every block. When I visited last summer downtown Seattle had transformed into San Francisco 2 with a starbucks on every corner and your average person young hip silicon valley tech. Portland still feels like it has its own character even if about half the coffee places are still Starbucks. Not a huge fan of Portland's hipster style, since I totally do not fit and it's not my scene, but I appreciate that it's a city that still has a style.
-Women in Portland are gorgeous! But you have to be a big fan of ink & piercings = which I am.
-Dudes were pretty good looking too! But you have to be a fan of twirly mustaches and flannel.
-Oh and beer everywhere. All the local stuff I tried was very good!
