Ya its more the I feel out of place part because I'm technically in the ML department but I don't really know any one there and hang out mostly in the NLP department.

When I got my first job as a studio musician my boss told me that there were going to be a lot of people coming and going and many would be pricks and conceited and treat you like trash, but the secret was to act like you deserve to belong there, because I had earned that right in being hired and that has served me well throughout my career. Wherever I go, I act like I belong there.

Of course this did backfire once when a member of a certain famous band came in and they were like "Hey Puppy this is Steve." I just non-chalantly looked up and said, "Hey Steve." and went back to what I was doing. The guy said, "Look here you little prick. Don't act all 'cool'. I know you know who I am. Show some damned respect."  I had to laugh, the guy was actually really cool though.

You can't tell us this story and then not give us the band name.

Presenting at conferences has gotten me over my nerves.  I used to shake and tremble when presenting in conference rooms and the last presentation I gave was in a hotel ball room that held several hundred people and it was the most relaxed I've been in a public setting.

I can't tell you which. Let's just say it starts with an "A" and ends with "erosmith"

Well you can throw away all those positive feelings I had. I'm now back to thinking suicidal thoughts. I'm trying to make it too November to (I know this sounds lame, but hey I'm lame) play through Final Fantasy which is yeah one of the few pleasures in my life. After I'm done with that, I don't know what will happen.

No matter how many times I feel better, I eventually sabotage my self. I'm extremely destructive to myself and all surroundings. It's pretty hard to want to be loved when you really dislike yourself and well I'm just not sure if I can actually improve myself. I need a radical shake up, but doing that seems very hard.

I keep getting emails from a recruiter at an insurance company about a position as a Benefits Consultant. They want me to come in and interview.

Anyone have any experience with this sort of position? I looked it up and I'm not sure really what I think. I've been thinking about maybe getting out of IT and doing something else so maybe it could be a good way out.

Getting experience from a different business field might be good for your career. I'm sure you can put your IT skills to good use there as well. Give it a try if the salary is higher and the job description sounds fun.

instead it uses the arial alternative so the fonts look much thinner

I'm probably gonna ditch this and go back to Windows 10 and think about what I want out of a linux distro, I'll probably go with arch linux again

I'm trying to figure out how to ask this without sounding like a jerk, but why are you constantly installing various operating systems on your computer? It's one computer, right? Do you have some kind of OCD?

I generally customize the fuck out of my fonts the second I install linux, the 4 I currently work with are ubuntu, elementary, mint and centos (apps shit). I can understand why you'd not like the out the box fonts.

I probably do it more, I've run primarily on Solaris, BSD, Haiku (for keks), ReactOS (for keks), AmigaOS, and many different linux distros for periods of time. The issue is outside of windows there are not many operating systems that gets everything just right or at least do things decently. So I end up with having stuff like mint for work, elementary for everyday use etc. Linux distros tend to be very curated to a specific type of usage. Of course you are now asking 'why not windows then you fucking neckbeard', I do have windows 10 as a dual boot on most of my systems and to be honest it's fine and better than near every other os I use (except maybe for centos, but that's a specific use case). It's mostly philosophical differences and security like being able to audit/inspect every bit of code that builds my OS that made me move to FOSS stuff about 10 years+ ago (it's telling that I still havent kicked windows completely ).

Yesterday I was flipping through the channels and found the last few minutes of a Girl Meets World episode that I left on out of curiosity, it was the end of some funeral and before the credits Cory calls Mr. Feeny to check in if he's still alive. Booked a spa getaway package.  35 and never been to an american spa before, hell I've never had a massage before outside of gfs rubbing shoulders, but I really enjoy Japanese onsen (the water & tranquility is amazing) and been wanting to try a US spa for a while to see if they sorta of compare (it was always just kind of awkward going to a spa as a guy).  So going all in with a couple night stay at a natural mineral hot spring along with full massage and body & facial spa treatment.  I figure I'm either going to really like it and then this will be a thing I do here and there, or it's going to be super awkward and uncomfortable and I'll stick to only bathing in Japan :X

You can survive for a while without a car but you'll hate not having one. One of the upsides of the smog is that it's relatively cheap (~$5000) to get a good used car and fast to get a license (2 seperate visits a week apart).

Housing is bigger and cheaper than Paris. I know that much from HGTV.

Living in LA without a car is some kind of strange oxymoron. I gave my last car to a homeless person in LA because living there without one is harder than living without a home. Buses are always late. Trains have been implemented since I left, but I'm under the impression that they're sparse. Cars are cheap, but insurance and repairs are not.

Then again, shit, I forgot about Uber. Maybe these days it's doable?

I'm not aiming for becoming a permanent resident, more of a temporary employement situation, and would probably therefore come alone. Not looking for an house or anything... I'm more worried, in that case (apart from affordable housing) by practical access to basic commodities (groceries, etc...). Never went to LA so no idea what to expect, please point out how unfeasible...

If you're over 18. Just go in and take the written test and then you're allowed to come back a week later for the practical driving test, which is usually not that hard (I didn't even have to parallel park). Most people prefer to have a couple months practicing driving with somebody else before taking the driving test but there's no requirement for driving school for adults.

Unless you position your living place perfectly in relation to where you are going to work (unlikely) I can't suggest doing LA without a car. I don't live there, but I travel there at least once every other month and can't possibly imagine living there without a car. Uber will work.  Thing with LA is everything is really spread way out and bus is OK so long as you're centrally located. Other's mileage may vary, but I couldn't do it.

Went to the new 7-11 last night to get some gas. It's new and in a pretty good part of town so I was a bit surprised by what happened.

A nice ford excursion pulls up and parks.
Three hot latinas hop out and one of their kids. The kid and two of the other latinas go into the 7-11. The other one runs to behind the dumpster while starting to pull down her pants.  I was still filling up on gas so I couldn't see anything. After a few minutes the latinas that went in came out of the 7-11 with whatever they bought and the girl from the behind the dumpster gets back in the car and they leave.

After I was done with the gas I peek behind the dumpster and see a puddle of urine. There was a perfectly fine lit, indoor bathroom literally a few feet away. Why would you squat behind a dumpster, especially if you're a woman and can't really aim?

Perhaps my favorite thing about reading HP as a kid were the Christmas chapters. I've always enjoyed reading the most during winter, snug inside while it snows outside a window. I picked up One Piece got to the point where they got Chopper. I really enjoyed it. But it is rather daunting, I've barely begun and there's just SO much of it.
