Apparently the best UX Researcher he's ever worked with was also a school psych.

That's not too surprising, design concerns itself with human behavior. Being able to get into the user's head is pretty important.

That was one of the reasons I'm attracted to UX research. It was just encouraging to hear that I'm not crazy or out of my league.

A lot of people who seem like they know what they're doing actually don't really know. It seems to be the case with just about everything. You just kind of make it up as you go along. Although for user-centered design, that's actually a good thing. You have to go with your gut as much as possible.

Also what's the difference between UX research and UX design?

And is UX design what they call industrial design these days? Is it because a lot of focus has gone into software thanks to the internet/smartphone interfaces etc and industrial design is more about physical shit?

UX Research/User Experience Research is the front end. It's talking with users, conducting observations, surveys, gathering data, developing persona reports, storyboarding, etc. Putting together all of the information on how people interact with a product/problem and working with designers to help them develop said product. Lots of empathy and active listening. The stuff I was trained to do in graduate school and did in the schools for ten years, just in a different setting. Kinda reminds me so far of putting together behavior plans for kids.

Sounds good, although I hope the 'designers' you're working with do a little bit of what you do as well.

They don't do the initial research or investigation, but storyboarding and such is a big group thing in the real world. Kinda weird doing all these projects in isolation when that's not how it really works. Just like everything.

Working in game development, the problems were rarely incompetence. It was more commonly responsibility and communication that bit us in the ass. Bullshit marketing deadlines were also frequently a problem, but getting into why marketing people cause problems would require its own thread and the rest of my week.

To be honest, I felt like the big problem in Japan was being pressured into utter conformity and having little room for exploration. In the USA it was down to unrealistic expectations on milestones. But as I review cases in my memory, yeah, there were people who just fail-fail-failed. Not many, but enough.

Nah, not everyone.  Where I am is pretty chill for the most part and not everyone who calls is that stupid.  I just like to post about the most ridiculous ones.   

That said, I am constantly amazed how many people who call could have resolved their own problems if they just googled it.  Sometimes you'll get even the most basic of "issues," like an application icon being unpinned from the taskbar.  The people who call about this don't know that it's called "the taskbar," however, so I guess it might be hard looking it up.

Just drank some coffee for the first time in a decade or so.

I know it's supposed to be an acquired taste but damn this shit is heavy and tastes weird. And I'm not even sure I brewed it right. I think I did but I'll practice some more (Aeropress + Hario Skerton mill).

Edit: okay it looks like I didn't use enough coffee grind. I used one scoop but the guide says one and a half of fine grind and suggests you'll probably want to use more than that. I thought it was weird because it seemed a bit too light, the color at least.

Coffee, just like any other kind of cooking, is just science. If you have instructions, follow them. There are also plenty of YouTubes out there on AeroPress variants. I use the inverted method exclusively.

The movers finally delivered my furniture to my new apartment this week.  The next day I got a call from one of their reps asking me to rate the service.  I didn't like how I had to spend more than a week in my new place without much of my belongings, but my policy on customer service evaluations is to either stay mum or give positive feedback.  I wouldn't want to be the reason someone got fired, missed a bonus, or faced some other employment repercussion.  Since I was caught off guard, I gave the delivery people the best possible rating in every category.  On the third day I got another call from them.  They added me to their customer appreciation program .  The program gives you the chance to enter sweepstakes to win home appliances and gift cards in exchange for posting positive reviews on various websites.  Each review increases your chance of winning.  The prizes aren't particularly appealing to me and there's no way I'm giving them free advertising.  They had me sleeping on the floor for a week and a half because they had my bed among other things.

They were most likely doing other pickups and deliveries in between.  After my stuff got picked up, I found out that the company I made the agreement with doesn't actually handle physically moving any items.  Their service just connects customers with movers.  I got billed once over the phone when I set the pickup appointment and wrote a money order to another party upon delivery.  It's a strange, expensive, and inefficient process.  Next time I move, everything gets shoved in my own car.

Bought that bike -- when my insurance ran the VIN turns out it's a 750 and the shop was mistaken -- still really wanted it so I just had them knock a couple hundred off and order me a part it needs (passenger foot pegs) on the house.
