Preface - I generally dont celebrate birthdays always just seemed like a hassle and always been a hassle.
So today is my birthday, but also potentially one of the saddest days I'm going to have in a while. I have this buddy at work that I've talked with, ate with, laughed with, cried with everyday for the past 8 years, real friendship, not a work acquaintance vibe. They got laid off and tomorrow is their last day but effectively today is the last day I see them at work cause I booked the week off as my birthday gift, I did this way before I knew about the lay-offs. This friend is literally the only person on earth that makes a deal out of my birthday and I'm sitting here being completely sad by the context of the day, I havent seen them yet but I hope they forget. I wont lose this friend cause we do stuff together, but going from hanging out everyday for 8 years to twice a month if you're lucky friends is going to be fucking lame and who knows how that changes our interactions, of course I havent brought any of this up cause they're dealing with the ramifications of this lay-off and i dont want them to have to manage my emotions as well. We found out last week but they negotiated with HR to stay at home with salary for the next 2 months.
