A year ago today, the 2010 Winter Olympics opened in Vancouver.

And as cynical as most of us Canucks on here are, I truly believe those games helped to transform our country in a positive way...

The drama of Joanne Rochette winning bronze after losing her mother mere days before.

Winning more gold medals than any other country for a Winter games.

The drama of the overtime win for hockey gold.  (You Yanks were an epic and worthy opponent, and I salute you for it.  But that ending with Sid scoring the OT goal was right out of a movie)

Those three vids still choke me up a year later.  I'm a sucker, I know, but I wear my pansy-ness proudly.    and hell, if any of you had stood at the peak of Whistler mountain on a clear day, you'd be just as awestruck as I was.  I consider that as more proof of the existence of God as any bullshit put forth by Bill O'Reilly or Kirk Cameron over the past five years, easy.

If I have a function U(q) and U(q) = U1(q)+U2(q), and I know how to get the gradients of both U1 and U2, does the gradient of U equal the sumation of the gradients of U1 and U2? Let G be the gradient sysmbol, so

if U(q) = U1(q)+U2(q), then GU(q) = GU1(q)+GU2(q)?

I'm pretty sure both GU1 and GU2 each are one place vectors.

Question 4: A la carte (10 marks)
A certain restaurant has an appetizer menu with 6 items on it, with the following costs:

Mixed Fruit $2.15
French Fries $2.75
Side Salad $3.35
Hot Wings $3.55
Mozzarella Sticks $4.20
Sampler Plate $5.80
The problem to solve is to find combinations of these items so that the total cost is exactly a given
dollar amount. For example, for $15.05, you can get 7 orders of Mixed Fruit; or 1 order of Mixed
Fruit along with 2 orders of Hot Wings and 1 order of the Sampler Plate.
Your program should return one combination at a time, and should try to find more combinations
for the same cost when you press ";". You should probably use integers to represent the dollar
amounts in cents, rather than using real values. It's okay if your program nds the same answer
more than once.
Copy/paste a short demo of your program into a text file and submit it as well.

Well the gradient is just the summation of the partial derivatives wrt x, y (and z depending if you're working in 2D or 3D) iirc. Do you know the actual functions U(q) and G? I don't think GU(q) = GU1(q)+GU2(q) in all cases.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Worded it a bit weird. As in <fx, fy, fz> = (df/dx)i + (df/dy)j + (df/dz)k.

Taking calc 3 before trying to do this kind of stuff probably would have helped.

grad(Uatt(q)) = grad(1/2 alpha d(q,q-goal)^2) = 1/2 alpha grad(d(q,q-goal)^2) = apha(q-q-goal)



Urep(q) = 1/2 theta (1/D(q) -1/threshold)^2, if D(q) <= threshold

Looking at this I suppose you could do them separately. Is apha(q-q-goal) supposed to be alpha * d(q, q - goal)? Then I guess that would be the line, although I'm not really sure exactly what Uatt is.
