Please help me borrow my neighbors WiFi connection.....
« on: December 20, 2006, 09:50:02 AM »
Just moved into our new house on Monday, and unfortunately there is no cable service in the area yet.  So, I was lucky enough to have a neighbor very nearby that has an open WiFi connection.  It works very well with my laptop in about 75% of my house.  Unfortunately that other 25% is very important to me, as it's where my Xbox 360, and Wii will be located.

So, i'm hoping to figure out how to use my current router, or a bridge to take that signal, and strongly project it around my home.  I'm looking for the easiest solution, as I don't know that much about this stuff.  I also only have a MAC laptop, so I can't easily access my routers configuration settings.

Please help, as i'd love to save myself the money of having to get a phone line, and DSL service.

I don't understand this response.  I don't have ANY cable service in my neighborhood yet.  None at all.  That means I can't get cable internet, or cable tv.  Thats why i'm trying to use my neighbors connection.

What?  I'm not stealing, i'm borrowing man.  I will pay them back later, ya know?

Seriously though, i'm not going to abuse their connection, and frankly they should have enough common sense to put a password on it.  I'm not some nut who does anything crazy online.  I literally browse the gaming sites, and forums on my laptop, and do some gaming on my 360, and Wii.  I don't believe for a second that my neighbor is going to notice, or be affected one bit by me using their connection.  So I feel no guilt in doing so, even if it is technically "stealing".

When my routers been down and out ive BROWSED on neighboring wireless routers people dont bother to secure. They wont notice browsing or probably even streaming video-music. Its the downloading or games they'd notice.

Thats the thing, I don't download any crazy files or anything.  I'm not a warez kind of guy, and i've never downloaded anything other than the most basic things.  I buy a little music on itunes occasionally, and I download the 1up show once a week.  Thats about it folks.

Also, what are you meaning by "games"?  I thought i've heard before that gaming online uses very small packets of data, and thats it's hardly using much bandwith at all.

Why the hell wouldn't I be able to sleep at night?  Please, get off your horse, it's not that high.

I could understand if I was going to affect this person's internet experience one bit, but I don't believe I will.  I really don't.  So, if you can't give me a real example of how i'm gonna negatively affect this person's internet connection, please stop with the nonsense.

I don't know maybe they work hard and pay for the internet in an honest way, and you're just a freeloader leeching it off of them.  Who am I one to talk though, lol. I watch any show or movie that comes out but I don't pay for it!

So i'm sure one of you pc geeks can tell me how to do this bridge/router thing.

I just need to take that signal, and then relay it.  How to do?

Actually if you have to do anything beyond having your adapter pick up their router you might just wanna not do it.

In the event for some odd reason it is brought to light and you are questioned about it its easier to say OOPS I Was ON UR NETWORK? THIS THING JUST AUTO CONNECTS CRAZY!

Than, OOPS! I DID THIS BRIDGE ROUTER THING AND CONNECTED TO YOUR NETWoRK?!?

I only use nearby networks when mine is down and need support to get it going again, and even then im just picking the closest unsecure network and tapping in for browsing and e-mail.

Well games dont depend on bandwidth so much as latency. Now doing what youre doing, with wireless will in the end pose as many performance problems for you as it does for them. Downloads on their end will take priority over what your game is doing almost all the time, and you cant really schedule your games around when they are or are not downloading things. Additionally if THEY play games on their network and youre playing a game omg they'll get curious about their shit ping and start troubleshooting their network.

Just cause the network isnt secure doesnt mean theyre dumb, it possibly means theyre lazy or feel confident they could take care of any 'issues' that arise.

In short, 'borrowing' internet is only advised in worst case need to get your own network running scenarios. Even DSL, while capped at 1.5 most of the time, is fast enough for online gaming and honestly better in some ways because it is dedicated unlike cable which is shared at various points of the day. DSL runs like 30 bux for me and well....why "borrow"?

Why do you have to be a prick?  It's not my fauilt I couldn't get cable internet.  I am fully ready to pay for it, if only the idiot cable company would offer it in my area.

The reason i'm reluctant to get DSL is because I don't have a home phone line, and I have no intentions of getting one.  Since my wife, and I got a nice combined cell phone plan, we have absolutely no need for a home phone line.  It's worthless to us.  Our cell phone service is incredibly reliable, and we get perfect signals in our house.

So, thats the problem here.  I can't get cable internet, and i'd have to get a seperate home phone line for no reason other than using it for DSl.  So, until I get cable service in my neighborhood, I intend on using my neighbors blatantly open line, and i'm quite sure no problems will arise from it.

Now if one of you would just give me a simple explanation for how to use a bridge, or my router to get this working, i'll be happy.  You all want me to be happy, don't you?   :(

Yeah, you are being a prick.  I'd bet anything if you were in the same situation, you'd be using your neighbors connection as well.  I'm sure if you moved into your new house, and found a wide open wifi line with a good signal, you'd just turn off your computer and not be online for weeks, right?  nicca please!

I'm not sure if some of you got confused somewhere in this thread, but i'm in no way "hacking" my neighbors connection here.  Their connection was wide open, with NO password protection of any kind.  I simply turned on my laptap at my new house, and it asked if I wanted to connect to the open network.

Also, as far as I know, the minimum charge for having a phone line is $20 a month.  So, i've got to have some jackass phone technician out to my house, which means I need to be home from work to wait for his ass to show up.  All so I can get DSL.  No thanks.

I do have two phone jacks in the house though.

Why don't you go to a library and figure out how to steal bandwith, instead of lecturing the people who don't want to help you? I would think you'd be researching instead of tsk-tsking Wobe.

Like I said at the beginning of this thread, I don't know much about this shit.  I'm pretty much in the dark when it comes to routers, and networking.  So, even if I were to find some info online, i'd probably still need someone to explain it to me.

Oh, and i'm just annoyed with the amount of people in this thread who act like they ride on high horses about this shit.  These are the same people that probably have 20,000 illegally downloaded songs on their harddrive, and had chipped PSOne's with 100 burned games sitting around.

I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE, so I don't appreciate getting lectured by them.  I'm just a simple internet user who has never illegally downloaded a song, or movie in his life.  Most because I don't even know where to begin looking.  I'm that ignorrant to it all.  I just browse a few gaming sites I enjoy, and send emails.  Thats it.  I also like to game online with my consoles.

You're splitting hairs. If you're taking something without asking for it, how is that different than downloading a song, a movie, etc?

Go to your neighbor's house and ask for a cup of internet.

I didn't say they were different.  I am just explaining why i'm giving people like Wobe a hard time.  Yeah, I want to use my neighbors wide open wifi.  Then i've got people replying like i'm taking money out of someone's wallet.  Thats the reason for my attitude.

I have used others when my connection dropped, my neighbor actually had it so I could print to his printer and see all his files. I typed up a sheet and sent it to his printer, then he came over and asked me if I knew how to fix it, so I did.

It's illegal in many jurisdictions. The court analogy is that it's akin to walking into someone's house and mucking around in it -- it's trespass, even though the door has been left open, and even though your intent isn't harmful (although deteriorating their performance with game data certainly *is* harmful). This is contrasted with public WiFi spots, which are more akin to "cafes" and require you to authenticate to participate.

Seriously, you aren't entitled to services you didn't pay for, you dirty poor, and your personal failings aren't a permissible excuse among the civilized.

First off, as far as I know it's only illegal to break someone's incryption, and then access their files.  Simply using an open wifi signal is NOT illegal.  There might be a few areas where that isn't the case, but for the most part thats how it works.

Second, before anyone lecture me on this topic, they should take a step off their horse, and ask themselves if they've ever downloaded songs that they didn't pay for, or ask themselves if they've ever downloaded a movie or tv show off the net without paying for it, or ask themselves if they've ever downloaded roms for old videogames that they didn't pay for.

Only then can anyone justly question the actions i've discussed in this thread.

I think its a good idea to try and spend as little time in the gray areas of the legal system as possible. Eventually those areas will get one of two colors, leaving you with a 50% chance of an anal cavity search.

Has it not occured to anyone, that if the person left their connection totally unprotected, that they probably don't know much about this stuff to begin with.  I doubt they're really worried about their connection, and who's on it, yet they failed to even put a simple WEP password on the thing.

Has it occured to you that most people are either lazy, or know how to deal with an 'issue/leech' when it comes up. I know plenty about this crap and I didnt have my network secured for a while.

Well then, let's hear how you would deal with such a situation.  Why the hell wouldn't you at least put a simple WEP on there?  Not doing so is just asking for people to try and leech of you.

It ISNT asking people anything, thats exactly my point. Just because I dont wear bulletproof armor to work every morning doesnt mean im ASKING for a driveby. Quit trying to rationalize crime, your type are the reason the legal system is fucked.
