Why? I saw a lot of posts and signs about changes to the bus schedules so maybe that's it.

i should have been more specific.

it goes into effect at like midnight, so it will only be happening when i am trying to come home from a show in manhattan, which is, of course, the time i will least want to deal with some train bullshit

but basically what will be happening is that the L train past the second stop in brooklyn will be nonfunctional so i catch a now infrequent train to about half a mile away from where i live.  thank god i don't live in bushwick or futher than williamsburg

Startselect, people are trying to talk you out of living in expensive ass manhattan. Go to the Bx, Qnz, or Bk. It's much cheaper and Manhattan is only a train ride away.

I know that! My friend is only familiar with Manhattan, if we can find a place to stay and explore the area and become more familiar with the other boroughs, we'll surely move around. If I can't make it in Man., I'm not going to force it just to prove a point. I'm more than down to try the other boroughs, since the tourists are probably going to sicken me after a short while in Manhattan. From what I hear they tend to stay in Times Square, though.

i know you don't want any advice and want to succeed or fail on your own, but i think that setting yourself up in a prohibitively expensive area of manhattan is more a chance to fail than a chance to succeed

but that's all i'm going to say on the subject.

It isn't that I don't want advice, I would love advice, I just don't want snarky, condescending advice. I know Manhattan is expensive, and I'm not ruling out other areas. My roommate is familiar with Manhattan's east side, I am not familiar with any of New York, since I'm going with this dude I want at least one of us to know where the hell everything is. After I get my bearings I'm probably going to find some other place or convince him to move to place that's easier to make rent for.

Also, what's up with Himu's picture of subway tickets? Aren't they $2 a pop for the day pass, or is that something different?

I didn't take pic of Subway tickets. I took pics of RAILROAD tickets. I'm in Connecticut, not NY. One of my friends we're staying got us in this nice hotel...for FREE. We rode the train from CT to NYC. Costs 25 bucks for a round trip. What I'm amazed at is the fact that people commute to work out of state to NYC EVERY DAY. I mean, the trip took about 40 minutes, but goddamn, 25 dollar tickets and monthly rates that cost over 300 bucks? And keep in mind that a lot of these people have CARS on top of all of this.

We weren't just seeing businessmen and women get on this thang to and from work either. What's the avg minimum wage in NYC?

that was a Rail Service, commuter rail to places like Milford CT to get suburbanites into the city

the normal subway rides are (as of now) $2.25 to go from anywhere to anywhere.  I buy a monthly card which gives me unlimited use of bus and subway for $89

tourists stay in times square, wall st and such like that.  it's a fucking nightmare if you have to get anywhere around there during tourist season.  coming from the dc area, i had an ingrained hatred of tourists already, but goddamn these euros drive me mad.

if you only take the subway once a day, wouldn't it be cheaper to pay $2.25 every time? also I heard the month passes are going up to $100 by the end of this year

$6.25 last time I checked but from what I understand no one pays anywhere near that low in the city.

EDIT: nvm, went up to $7.25

if you can walk or bike to work, then yah, it makes sense to not have to do that.

otherwise, it's nice to not have to worry about, and it's certainly cheaper than owning a car.

Cars are quicker for getting to and around any borough except Manhattan. Also, public transportation can sometimes be extremely annoying and uncomfortable.

I don't mind that coming from you :-*

That's understandable. If I end up living in another borough, would a motorcycle be a wise choice of vehicle? I don't really care for cars. Outside of the usual safety issues with motorcycles, is anything amplified in NYC?

On Wednesday:

- Took the rail from Milford to NYC, road the subway to the Bronx. Went to Bronx Zoo. Amazing place. I was curious as to how Bronx would be like but it feels pretty similar in terms of feel to Brooklyn, which is a good thing. Stayed at the zoo from like 11 am to 3 pm and had a blast. The place is fucking huge. On top of this, this was pay any price Wednesday, so the place was packed. Holy shit on a corn cob.
- Rode the rail back to Milford, rested for  a few hours because we were going to Broadway and watch the Lion King.
- Drove to NYC instead of taking the rail, traffic wasn't too bad and the layout wasn't that confusing...surprisingly, as far as driving through NYC for the first time could be. We wanted to see the city at night so we went around 6 pm. To pass the time walked around Central Park. Wonderful place!
- Saw the Lion King, expectations we shattered. That was my first real Broadway and I was amazed. :o
- Drove back to Milford.

Thursday:

- Explored the Connecticut countryside, one of my friends we were traveling with is from CT, so we decided to crash at her place, which is pretty close to UConn but still within the country. Like most Full Sail students, her folks are loaded. Beautiful place. :o
- Stayed over the night there and had a great dinner.

Friday:

- Funds almost exhausted and with the crappy weather headed our way we decided to high tail it to Florida. We're now in Tennessee.

I bought a new charger for my cam from a local radioshack in Milford. :bow RADIOSHACK :bow2

But by then...it was too late and I didn't get the chance to photograph all the tourist attractions. Oh well, there's next time I come.

A few more random shots of NYC

Some pics of Connecticut:

It must suck to have this ugly sign in front of your house.

Where we stayed before leaving the good ol' CT:

Ugh, I forgot to lower the ISO. Now it looks like it was photographed with a camera running Windows 95.

Hopefully when I come to NYC next time I'll have a dslr instead of a dinky point n' shoot.

Overall, it was a fantastic road trip. Probably my favorite one too!

I dunno. It was just like any other city except faster.

Ever been to an American city? Keep that in mind, it's not really any different except you have to memorize subway maps. Just don't be too hasty.
