What exactly is criterion?
"The Criterion Collection is a privately held company which produces and releases authoritative consumer versions of "important classic and contemporary films" on DVD. "

Their DVD's tend to be expensive collector's edition sets that go for higher prices than normal DVD's to put them at a more important classier level.

It's a price thing mostly, their dvds are nothing special, mostly fluff.

That's exactly why I didn't get the thing. 40 dollars for one movie, 2 of the discs being the movie itself. Ridiculous.

Then you'll never be a film lover! A very large amount of classic films are criterion and they got for 50+ a movie some times.

Just buy the superior American remake, The Magnificent Seven, for like $8 and call it a day.

I think they have criterion's.  I am pretty sure in-store places  like blockbuster don't.

What!? The best remake of Seven Samurai was Three Amigos with...MARTIN SHORT(yes the movie was inspired by seven samurai):

People get all up on The Seven Samurai's junk because it's foriegn, but The Magnificent Seven benefits from being in English, more entertaining and with better actors.  Yul Brenner and Steve McQueen?  C'mon, nothing can beat that, even if you happen to live inside Kurosawa's rectum just because, "omg he is teh black white foriegn film jap master!"

Three Amigo's is Seven Samurai but in Mexico. And replace Samurai's with Martin Short, Chevy Chase, and Steve Martin. It is as good as the concept probably seems to be!  :-*

It's not really The Seven Samurai, but it does borrow from that concept.  It's funny, though.

I love Seven Samurai because its a damned great piece of adventure entertainment. I could have been made in Hollywood a year ago by Spielberg and my opinion wouldnt change. Im not up AK's rectum because hes a "foreign jap master", Im up there because hes one of the 5 greatest filmmakers who ever lived.

It was already made by Hollywood and it is superior to its foriegn counterpart!  Better score too (Oscar nominated, if I'm correct).

I'm not necessarily saying you, but that seems to be the reason in general.  I wouldn't even put him in my Top 10.  I believe American film buffs subconsciously think that a decent foriegn film is great because they can't believe people can make decent films outside of America.  Plus, it makes them seem more cultured.

I can think of maybe 3-4 American directors who even come close to having the filmography and consistency that AK did.

Say what you want about cultures, but those are the facts.

It may be produced by a British film company, but it is a Hollywood franchise.

Those aren't facts - film is subjective!

How? The franchise started as a british book series and then became a british film franchise. Dr. No was made with the british in mind, not america.

Its origins are irrelevant to the fact that is a Hollywood franchise now.  Sorry, you must accept it to be true!

But they refused to let Spielberg and Tarintino to direct it because they are american! They have a strict no american policy in allowing directors for Bond.

Sure it is. But I still think AK's status is almost deserving of crossing the line into FACT.

EDIT: Bond is not Hollywood.

I don't know enough about the franchise to disupte this claim, but I do know that they've had non-UK directors on many, if not most of the films.

And this has no bearing on whether or not it's a Hollywood production.  It is!

Ran is good stuff.

He's a good director (borderline great director), but I think his importance and skill are inflated by a lot folks just because he hails from Japan.  He's partly responsible for one of my favorite Leone films to boot, so he can do no wrong in my eyes.

While I love me some Kurosawa, its definitely not because he's from Japan. Hell, I hate to admit it, but I kind of get turned off on films with subtitles unless they can really hold my interest and detract from the fact that I'm reading a film, and Kurosawa's classics do just that. Hell, I love the man because he was a fantastic director -- if it hadn't been for his unique ideas and extraordinary filmaking prowess, Western cinema as we know it would not have been the same.
