It's no secret that third-party devs love 360,so expect lots of "Wii denied" stuff to pop out.

can't wait to watch third and methodis squirm and bububu when sony gets busted doing prerecorded shit with the move, as well  :hyper

anyone who thinks any of these companies is going to risk their equipment glitching out due to the variables involved in a 100% live demonstration is a genuine distinguished mentally-challenged fellow

also finally got around to watching that destructoid video - while i am firmly NO in regards to natal wave kinect, that was a dreadfully unfunny and desperate attempt at fishing for controversy hits

no wonder jim sterling was complaining about the heat from the crowd, dude's got to be around 400, he probably gets overheated if one other person is in the room

I'm pretty much of the same opinion with Kinect/Natal as I was before yesterday. We'll see if they show anything to change my mind today although I doubt it. It's funny though to see the gaming press come to the same conclusion as if its a great revelation when anybody with a brain knew what was up when it was shown last E3. It's not for us. It's not for hardcore gamers. So honestly their impressions of it don't really matter.

To the people they are trying to reach getting up and flailing around like a spaz isn't a negative. That being said, they won't even make a dent in the mindshare the Wii has and Nintendo still understands that part of the market better than either Sony or MS.

Oh and since we can't do ban bets unless it's me being banned I'll wager this:

If I win, I get a quick 1 minute spot on the Borecast to say whatever I want and it gets aired
If you win I can be permabanned

MS real press conference is bound to have someone playing and interacting with Kinect...so that bet would be kinda goofy

Kinect event was Cirque du Soleil show, everything there was a part of the show including Kinect.

It was never supposed to be...bunch of fat dudes jumping like monkeys while playing Kinect on stage.

Why would anyone record something like that and broadcast it on TV?

also, note that i wrote "variables involved in a 100% live demonstration"

to spell it out, that means that while there will be people doing simple things with these devices (things which don't have a high chance of completely breaking down), a good bit of both shows is gonna be prerecorded/synced

The only way Move will fail is if Sony fail to make hardcore Move games.

Considering how bad Microsoft has dropped the ball with Natal, well, it's only Sony that can fuck Sony at this point.

My issue is that NO OTHER RETAILER has pushed that price. Not Kmart, not sears, not best buy. None of them.

The king of videogame pre-orders rarely messes up prices.

Like I said, hopefully I'm wrong. Hopefully Kinectic is affordable for everyone.

Well, this gen is clearly gonna be another 3 yrs at least. Might be worth getting another 360 just to keep the noise down. Can't say any of this is wildly exciting to me though. The Mizuguchi game looks fantastic but I suspect it will be a little more mundane when we actually see in-game stuff. i.e. it will probably be just another rail shooter.

Tech analysis by DF

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-kinect-tech-analysis

In short it works, not without problems but nothing that some casual game player would care about

And it's fun to play...the most important thing

Some interesting stuff about latency

Quote
However, it is important to point out that there are a huge range of factors that conspire to make Kinect react differently depending on the game being played. Rare's Nick Burton, who we spoke to at the hands-on event, was very specific in pointing out that his game operates with a latency of 150ms, not including display lag.

We've seen in previous Digital Foundry tests on console game latency that 30FPS titles typically operate at 100ms in a best-case scenario. While Kinect Sports can run at 60FPS (certainly the bowling does), the scan rate of Kinect is limited to 30FPS, so at the very best we should never assume to see any kind of response better than the 100ms "standard".

Over and above that there are other considerations. For example, in terms of the lag, there's going to be a fixed "cost" in acquiring the depth map and the RGB info, and there's also going to be an additional latency caused by the transfer of USB - you'd think that these are the baseline fixed costs of operating the system. Then there's the processing of the acquired data, and the different configurations from which developers can access it

So, what are these elements exactly and how would they impact performance? An RGB image with the depth map aligned (or registered, as Microsoft calls it) along with voice command analysis is clearly going to require more CPU work than processing skeletal data and some gesture-recognition alone.

This presumably explains why Burton was so keen to point out that his game operates at that specific level of latency. Even in our own latency tests, we can see an enormous spread of controller lag across many titles running at the same frame-rates and we can imagine the situation being a lot worse with Kinect, definitely in the short term.

As pointed out in our initial hands-on yesterday and indeed way back in the original gamescom Digital Foundry vs. Project Natal feature, the lag factor definitely feels like more of an issue simply because we are used to our actions being transmitted to the console at the highest, fastest level.

Our hands and fingers are capable of extremely fast reaction times, so while jettisoning the joypad may appear to make the games more accessible, the human body as a whole cannot react anywhere near as fast as our brain-to-finger reflexes. This is why Kinect games that, on paper, have the same overall latency as some more traditional joypad games, actually feel a lot less responsive.

Factoring in the inherent latency of human movement is perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing Kinect developers, and what's more this is this is likely to be more or less of an issue depending on the person playing.

Gamespot impressions

Quote
After seeing Forza Motorsport's implementation of Kinect during the Microsoft press conference this morning, tonight we had a chance to play it for ourselves as well as chat with Turn 10 creative director Dan Greenawalt. First thing's first: Greenawalt made it clear that we saw today was not a downloadable update or patch for the copy of Forza Motorsport 3 you have sitting on your shelf at home.

This is a stand-alone package, complete with visual improvements that you wouldn't see without significant updates to the core game engine. However, what that package entails is still a big question mark: Turn 10 and Microsoft wouldn't say whether this was a sneak peak at Forza 4, Forza 3: Connect Edition, or what have you. Time will tell on that one. So while we don't know how it's arriving in stores, we do know how it plays.
The demo was broken into two halves: what Turn 10 calls the driving experience, and the car experience. The driving experience was a 90 second race down Fujimi Kaido in a cherry red Ferrari 458. With breaking and acceleration set to automatic, our job was to stand in front of the system and hold our hands out as if clutching a steering wheel, and just let our imagination flow. Steering with Kinect proved to be much more accurate than we were expecting. We did quite well in the race, and only managed to smash into a wall once--though we did smash into a Toyota Yaris or two pretty good.

The most delightful surprise of the driving experience was seeing the way the game tracks the movement of your head and shoulders. Leaning side to side twists the interior cockpit view to get a better perspective of your periphery, while moving toward and away from the camera allows you to zoom your view in and out--something that might prove useful when trying to make out a distant turn on an unfamiliar track. Turn 10 seemed proud of the visual improvements they've made to the cockpit view thus far, with a number of shaders added to better reflect the way light and shadows dance around the interior of the car.

Even if I were inclined to buy this, there's really no clean way for me to hook it up and use it.  With all of my equipment in an AV cabinet on a different wall and all wires run through those walls there's just no way.  I suppose if I really wanted to use Move (which I don't), I could just use a USB extension cable, but Kinect has its own special connector.  The wire for Kinect is unlikely to be long enough to even reach the center of my setup even when simply run across the floor.

At least the Wii sensor bar doesn't involve data of any sort making the wireless sort cheap and simple to use.

Fuck these new motion control add-ons.

It's pretty evident that it was all pre-recorded.

Either that or Natal has the ability to see into the future.

To be fair though, their only other option was to have the presenters wear orange jumpsuits.

Right now, Kinect only works when you stand. This includes menu navigation. All the cool options to grab a slider and advance through frames of a movie you are watching only work when you are on your feet. Kinect, we've been told, has problems handling your skeletal frame while sitting. The voice commands still work, but every game we've seen and even simple menu navigation have to be done with you out of your seat. That's not exactly how I want to watch my movies. If the focus for Kinect is creating games like Dance Central that naturally would require you to be off your couch, that's great. But I have to say, no one thinks "I am driving a car!" while standing up in their living room.
