FUD

It doesn't have to capture whole skeleton points, only selected points...what would be the point of full skeletal gesture recognition while sitting

Jumping wouldn't work also.

Right now, Kinect only works when you stand. This includes menu navigation. All the cool options to grab a slider and advance through frames of a movie you are watching only work when you are on your feet. Kinect, we've been told, has problems handling your skeletal frame while sitting. The voice commands still work, but every game we've seen and even simple menu navigation have to be done with you out of your seat. That's not exactly how I want to watch my movies. If the focus for Kinect is creating games like Dance Central that naturally would require you to be off your couch, that's great. But I have to say, no one thinks "I am driving a car!" while standing up in their living room.

But I fully expect some more damage control faked videos to pop up showing Kinect being used while sitting down.

Because if Kinect can not be used while sitting, then Microsoft have officially killed the product.

So let's summarize Kinect thus far:

- Pre-recorded stage demos.

- Lag is still noticeable.

- No price officially announced.

- No hardcore games announced.

- All driving games have no controls for accelerating or braking.

- Can not be used while sitting down.

- Voice recognition is inferior to ENDWAR.

- Peter Molyneux has zero plans for Kinect in Fable III.

- Milo and Kate were shown "behind closed doors" to celebs such as Steven Seagal a.k.a the bone ranger, Kelly Rowland a.k.a Beyonce's shadow, and other Z-list celebrities who attended the event for free swag and nothing else.

- Only 2 players supported.

Nothing is confirmed here,it's just sfags in panic mode. :smug

I can't believe that some people think that MS would release Kinect UI that would require you to stand...nobody would be stupid enough to release that

And now some more Kinect pimping

Quote
There's something very special about using Microsoft's Kinect system, something that separates it from every other combination of software and hardware I've ever used. Kinect adapts and accommodates the user. I'm not learning it; it's learning me.

But another bundled game in Kinect Sports impresses me in a completely different way: bowling. This game really showcases the platform's flexibility to natural human movement. I reach to my right to pick up my ball, asking, "Can I take a normal 3-step bowling approach?" The designers look at one another nervously. They say that I might want be careful not to extend myself beyond Kinect's radius of sight.

I get the impression that bowling hasn't been tested with this approach in mind. I try it anyway, shortening my steps a bit, but fully pantomiming bowling all the same. The ball rolls down the lane without a hitch.

Quote
After I take more than my fair share of time bowling, I look to Jason and ask if he wants to hop in. The PlayStation Move had forced me to stand in one place with two...err...spheres on my chin to calibrate a single game, but Kinnect lets Jason and I just swap spots instantly. Without any jitters, hang-ups or confusion, Kinect lets Jason pick up where I leave off, mid-frame.

Quote
"What do you think?" asks Wil Mozell, a Microsoft GM who oversees many of the companies designing Kinect's important launch titles.

"It's great," I say. "But what about the lag? Will you ever fully eliminate it?"

"We can get rid of a lot of it. Keep in mind, these games are 80-to-85% there. There's still lots of optimization left to do."

"But what about the hardcore games? The FPSs, the gameplay that requires 100% accuracy?" I push.

"Kinect isn't going to replace the controllers that have worked for those types of games for the last decade—that's not what we're trying to do. Kinect will work alongside those controllers for hardcore games. For throwing a grenade, for vocal commands, for..."

"For head tracking??"

"Yes, head tracking! Exactly." He gets a big smile. He wants to say more. Bound by Microsoft confidentiality agreements, he can't.

The bold thing is why i loove Kinect...keep the waggle bullshit out of my hardcore games

Quote
Kinect is wonderful for what it will do for full motion gaming. Kinect is wonderful for what it will do for the home theater and for hardcore gaming and for cultivating more "play" in gameplay.

But Kinect's most clever trick is beyond any of this. Kinect is more than an abstract "human interface device" but something far more subtle: an input device that can look at bunch of waving limbs and understand, "Hey! That's a human!"

http://gizmodo.com/5565657/xbox-360-kinect-teases-the-next-era-of-computing

Engadget is also pretty impressed
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/19/entelligence-the-aftermath-of-e3/

And now something interesting about Move,
Quote
After I take more than my fair share of time bowling, I look to Jason and ask if he wants to hop in. I was listening to the Weekend Confirmed podcast and they were talking abut Move boxing game...

After you finish calibrating your balls, you are told "Do not move your feet,You can't move your feet"

A boxing game and you can't move your feet :lol

Welp this looks like trainwreck now. It doesn't matter if they fix the standing vs sitting issue at launch as starting from this E3 everybody is talking/ writing about what Kinect DOESN'T do.

Majority of the previews/ articles concentrate on explaining what DOESN'T work with Kinect instead of hyping what DOES.

Very, very bad PR.

This was Microsoft's chance to sell the idea & hardware to the world and they blew it. They $599's it like Sony PS3.

I just hope Move also crashes & burns. Waggle gaming needs to be stillborn.

mustering last reserves of XBot Power here...

I guess forcing you to stand up during games would solve that whole thing of people bowling perfect games by making tiny flicks of their wrist while practically asleep on the couch. I'm not convinced that's a problem people want solved though, and that this is how anyone choose to solve it. Looks like a total hardware/software fuck-up that should have been caught long before the public saw this.

We can go in circles like that forever

Besides this thing is not launching tomorrow,in November you will be able to see what it can do,just like when 360,PS3,Wii launched
Why?Kinect is all about software

Yes,you are basically paying for potential but that is just the way this gen operates...future gens will be even worse in that regard

When you buy a game today, you also pay for potential since almost everything needs to be patched

Funny thing is that some(many) people are not even angry about that...oh,it will be patched...oh,i will just wait for a patch

Problem is, we've already had years of the Wii failing to live up to its potential and this just looks like a refinement. It's really hard to see any significant upside to Kinect because of that. After the Wii was announced, I remember a lot of wild speculation about all the cool games we might see - for Kinect and Move, all I see is gamers expecting lame shovelware and software companies lining up to deliver it. I'm not even 1% excited for this.

Nintendo was never good with third parties(until 3DS apparently) and they were not willing to experiment too much with their "hardcore" franchises. As for new "hardcore" IP fully designed around waggle...it wouldn't sell probably and this is Nintendo...not that i blame them, they are not a charity

Kinect primary audience is families, casuals not some basement hardcore nerd that masturbates at Killzone gifs...that was clear from the day one...
MS conference was exactly like that, hardcore stuff...the end...casual,family oriented stuff...the end
People that were expecting to see Kinect enabled knife stabbing, neck breaking are beyond delusional

If some Kinect interested mother sees something like that...it would be instant no buy.

So don't expect many hardcore games, certainly not many good ones...as usual devs will make things that sell
Sony is not going to make Killzone 2 budget game build from the ground up for Move(not controllable by dualshock)...that would be insane, make a $100 million game for like 10 Move owners

But it doesn't matter,MW2 has passed 20 million mark and shooters will be made like there is no tomorrow.
