I like how Saladin personally beheads that mother fucker in this one, instead of him just standing there while you hear it in the background. That dude is rad.

Braveheart is pretty awesome. I like Kingdom of Heaven too.

I didn't know that Ed Norton was King Baldwin until after I saw it. He is awesome.

I cant stand speeches in movies ever since Independence Day

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind.

Mankind -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today.

We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.

We will be united in our common interests.

Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July; and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from annihilation.

We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.

And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:

"We will not go quietly into the night.

We will not vanish without a fight.

We're going to live on.

We're going to survive."

Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

I had the fortunate well being of catching the DC at my uncle's house, after I pretty much swore Ridley off as washed up when I paid money to see the theatrical cut.  It changed my opinion and it's a great film.

The Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut is fuckin' amazing -- it's shocking how a director can totally change the visceral and emotional impact of a film by recutting and editing it. It went from a jumbled collection of arresting but arbitrary scenes to a hardcore motherfuckin' EPIC. Fuck, I actually respected Orlando Bloom's character this time around, instead of scratching my head and wondering what the hell the pretty boy was doing in the desert.

Prior to Kingdom of Heaven, he hasn't hit in a long, long time.  I don't think Gladiator is that great.

He was awesome, but just like my other favorite director from yesteryear, John Carpenter, I was willing to call it a day on him.

I enjoyed gladiator a lot, but I dont think the themes in it were handled nearly as well.

Plus there was that dumb speech the lady gave at the end that felt like stage play shit.

I loved Gladiator, if only for the audacity of its presentation -- the whole movie itself captures the brutal bombast of the gladiatorial spectacle. The plot ain't so great, and the dialogue veers towards camp (which I think is all too appropriate, given the theme), but it's just such a great over-the-top production -- with Hans Zimmer cowboying the score, of course -- that I can't help but get a serious kick out of it.

Yeah, I was really skeptical that a recutting of KoH could seriously improve what I felt was a largely flawed movie -- the original was like a haphazard mash-up of scenes and motives -- but I was proven quite wrong. The DC of KoH is probably one of Scott's best recent efforts, the still-dubious casting of Bloom aside.

This is what I've heard. The man brought me Gladiator only a few years earlier, I couldn't believe that he had fallen off so quickly. I know it gets some hate, but like Drinky, I love it.

The only thing that I really liked from Gladiator was Oliver Reed, and the movie was so meh that it killed him, Doug.  Also, I thought that the whole bit of Commodore-64-us trying to nail his sister, albeit a hot Connie Nielson, was handled awkwardly.

I actually like Gladiator quite a bit. Its got a SHITLOAD of problems, but it overcomes them for me. First and foremost, I love Russell Crowe in this. I also think Ridley was the perfect visual director for the material. And despite normally hating his work, I like Zimmer's score here. Really, the film falls apart because of its writing and editing.

Willco, no the fuck way, dode. All the fight scenes, despite the frame skip hijinks, are just fuckin' INTENSE. And fuck the haters, Joaquim Phoenix was stealin' scenes like Wynona thieves handbags, bitch -- I loved Commodus as a villain, because he brought back the Machivellian bombast from those old gladitorial epics in a modern emoboy style. ARE WE NOT AMUSED, moddafuck?

I don't have any problems with Phoenix's portrayal of Commodus (he was entertaining in spurts), but his whole relationship with his sister was just handled awkwardly.  Incest is taboo, but if you're going to make it a motivation for the charater - quit pussyfooting and run straight into the subject matter.

I really didn't like Russell Crowe in this, or much in anything really.

The skip frame hinjinks got out of control by the end, and the fight scenes were too few and far between.  I don't want to have watch all those symbolic imagery set to dream-like Zimmer stuff that he phones in.

That said, the score is pretty good.
