In Defense of Japanese Gaming
« on: June 24, 2010, 01:05:29 AM »
This fad, if you can call it as such, boggles my mind.

So let's discuss an area of discussion that is ever so common in recent years.

Most of us grew up playing games made in Japan. Since when has the ability to enjoy Japanese been catered solely to the denizens of "weeaboo-dom"? People don't say it, but they certainly imply that anyone who has a preference for Japanese games is a slobbery Japan freak otaku. Maybe some of us were in another lifetime, also called adolescence, but I think that it's quite unfair to label those who simply have preferences for Japanese games as these freaks of nature who somehow just don't "get" open-worlds, or "freedom", or cinematic gaming.

It seems that these days across not only gaming message boards, but also the gaming press itself, there stands an anti-Japanese game sentiment:

- Whether it's an rpg - "Bioware keeps making the same game since Baldur's Gate but their games are still more refreshing than a Japanese rpg game like Nier or Persona 4 or Resonance of Fate! I'm going to give Nier a 6/10 because it doesn't cater to my tastes!" This has spawned multiple threads on gaf even, where people are so self-disillusioned that they think good and evil choices in games are a new thing.

- Whether it's an action game - "Oh God, Mikami's making another action game? I hope it doesn't have shit controls. Japanese games never seem to have good controls in games, ever. Why are they so behind?" while at the same praising a game like Grand Theft Auto IV five seconds later.

- Most Japanese games period that are not made by Nintendo/Capcom -

I realize that this is most likely a by product of the fact that this console generation doesn't have much Japanese developer support on ps360 (though it definitely slides towards ps3's favor for Japanese oriented gaming), and that most of the Japanese games these days are being relegated to handhelds or the Wii, which as we all know are not viable platforms being that they are relegated to children and women and old people. I also realize that a gigantic bulk of console development now belongs to the west, compared to past generations when it was mostly the Japanese who made all the big hits.

Is it even remotely possible to have a discussion about a Japanese game or have preference for Japanese gaming without some pissant claiming that it's made exclusively for weeaboo's or that you're Japan obsessed? Is Japan really that behind, or are their games just clashing that much with western gaming sensibilities? Why are there any sides to this to begin with? It's definitely possible to enjoy Red Dead Redemption while being pumped for Resonance of Fate or a brand spankin' new Shin Megami Tensei.

So this issue has been mostly been silent yet not openly debated. Let's discuss it.

When did having a preference for Japanese games become a bad thing?
Because people certainly act like every single person vested in Japanese gaming is a homojapual of some sort. I can't be the only one who's noticed this.

I don't like American/western made games, too many samey dudebro shooters and open world games (though every so often you'll get a Mirror's Edge or a Portal out of the deal) and I don't care whether or not a bunch of internet nerds I'm never gonna meet label me a weeaboo or whatnot. (I kinda had a feeling this was a repost of a Himu post, sounds like his writing)

Way i see it, when we were kids, little difference there was between a japanese game and a western game. I couldn't tell the difference, i couldn't say this game is japanese that isn't. That's until Final Fantasy went 3D, and suddenly it all started to connect to anime.

Now, when i was a kid i did like Anime too, i really liked to watch Samurai X and Dragon Ball z, i would say my generation sort of grew up watching Japanese entertainment.

The problem though, is that the whole philosophy that worked before, doesn't work now that i'm 23. In short, the problem is the same across most pure Japanese games and anime and manga, that it's stuck in time. Square Enix reflects this when they said that Final Fantasy will always be made with a young demo in mind, and it's clear for everybody to see, even if it makes zero sense when you look at the contrast between difficulty, complexity and then the story and the characters.

A weaboo is the best example of a manchild really, to simply put it, for all the wrong reasons.

I think that's a good point, actually.  Most Japanese games these days are noticeable from a single screenshot.  It's not like the old days when Contra looked like Rambo and Rocket Knight looked like a saturday morning cartoon.  Recently there was Demon's Souls that caught on (relative).  Visually that came looks like it could have been made in the eastern block.

I don't really get the argument that Japanese games are 'for manchildren' any more than God of War, with it's over-the-top blood and gore, and QTE sex minigames is... or Gears with its adolescent testosterone power fantasy gameplay and huge hulking bald space marine stereotypes. I'd love to see all these western games with mature and sophisticated stories, too, nowadays...since most of what they are putting out tends to be as shallow and cliche (if not more so) than what the Japanese put out, just without shitty dubs and more coherent text. The days of something like Planescape or Ultima 4-7 are far from over it seems.

You didn't compare games. How am i even supposed to argue? If you can't see how a more realistic, more adult oriented kind of art style coupled with the guns, the sex, the violence that "boys" like and the loli shit you see in many japanese games, then that's a wrap on you man.

I would rather spend my day playing a testhosterone filled space marine game, where he gets to blow shit up like it's Bad Boys cranked up to eleven, then fucking play as some transfer cigarillo student in a japanese school, like that shit Persona.

Just sayin'. To me that's normal, like liking porn instead of not liking porn and preferring to see girls in anime. That's all

The problem is that on internet message boards, let's just say neogaf, a loud minority of those who prefer Japanese games also spend days arguing Japanese game sales, have a public obsession with all things Japan, want to live there mainly because of idolizing all things Japan mainly because of video games, sport rotating little girl anime avatars, and call games by their Japanese names rather than the English names everyone else in the western world is using.

And this is just me, but everytime I see a gaffer with a young girl anime avatar, I immediately think "that dude's a pedophile."

There's nothing wrong with preferring Japanese games. But a loud percentage of such people are completely insane about it and it sort of ruins it for everybody.

and that's fine but calling manchildren everyone who thinks otherwise feel somewhat offensive,of course this is the internet and anybody should be able to says what the fuck he wants, getting pissed at people for having opinions is stupid :)

It would be pretty awesome if people would stop having such an inane obsession with what other nerds on the internet think of them.

It would be doubly awesome if people complaining about unfair stereotyping would wake the fuck up and realize that people outside this hobby view us all as nerds. No matter what kind of silly argument or debate you may have, when it all settles we're all dumb slobbering nerds to the average person.

You love Japanese games? Awesome. You hate Japanese games? Awesome. Get on with your lives.
