Your position makes the most sense, because when we get enough information about any celebrity, we're less likely to find them bearable. However it's possible to sustain disbelief in most cases where their publicist or PR are doing their job properly and hiding all the crap. When Gillian and Duchovny were openly hostile toward one another during later seasons of X-Files, it became too difficult to separate the actors from the characters, and my suspension of disbelief was affected.

Usually I take this position. I haven't seen Apocalypto for instance; I've heard it's awesome and I'm not going to avoid seeing it because Gibson is a piece of shit.

Never knew this. Were they really hostile? I always just though Duchovny wanted out of the series towards the end.

If memory serves, they X-Files about 3 seasons in and negotiating (or renegotiating) contracts. Duchovny had successfully lobbied for N amount of money, but when Gillian was trying for the same amount of money, Duchovny balked at supporting her bid with any kind of solidarity. With the way contracts in Hollywood work, who knows if he was being selfish or sensible? But Gillian apparently took this to mean that he valued her contribution to the series less than his own.
