If Japan gets its own thread, it's only fair...

 :american

1. Wipeout series - Brobzoid nailed why. Absolutely mindblowing style, tight controls, fast-paced and challenging (almost too much so) gameplay. And of course, the music. The series started out right when I was getting into dance music/club culture, and nearly every release aside from Fusion is godly.

2. Ultima series - arguably the most influential RPG series of all time. Fresh full of ideas and concepts, from the mishmash of medieval and sci-fi, to storylines that shake up what is typical for the genre, and still some of the best examples of living, breathing worlds in all of gaming. Frequently pushed the technological envelope. Gives almost limitless choices in how you want to play. Too bad it didn't get a proper sendoff :(

3. Fallout series - another excellent example of the western RPG genre, with a memorable setting, and lots of choice and options on hwo you want to dictate the story.

4. Sim City series - I've always been interested in urban planning, and playing the original at summer camp on a black and white Macintosh was the reason.

5. Mirror's Edge - A fresh take on first-person gaming, with an unorthodox but effective control scheme, tight mechanics and level design (the latter something lacking in games of today) that encourage speed running, awesome graphical design, and fantastic music. Awkward, forced combat is the only fly in the ointment.

6. Planescape Torment - Haven't delved into the game too much, but was hooked when I saw a college friend playing the game. A 'murkin RPG with a detailed and intricate storyline and a creative setting/art style? I'm down!

7. Mass Effect 2 - some may complain that it sheds the RPG trappings from the first game, but it's a much better game for it. One of the most polished western gaming experiences ever, and while taken in from the first game, has an interesting lore. Not to mention, pretty damn good graphics, a workable combat system, and a great electronic music soundtrack. And crates, lots of crates everywhere.

8. Mortal Kombat 2 - of course, Street Fighter 2 holds up much better, but I have a lot of nostalgia for this game. All the secret characters, the fatalities, the lore... I was addicted to this game when it was in the arcades (and later when it came to the consoles). No other MK compares.

9. Donkey Kong Country series - Although they have the challenge and frustration oldskool British games are known for, they also have a level of polish seen only in other top-tier Nintendo games from the era. The pre-rendered graphics made our jaws drop, and the David Wise soundtrack is epic.

10. Unreal Tournament (original game) - One of the very few multiplayer games I got into. Used to stay up into the wee hours of the morning to play against friends. Extremely fast and tight gameplay, and a huge variety with the weapons and levels. Tons of additional content in the form of mods. Playing this on a high-level PC (at the time) made me wonder why the hell everyone was going so ga-ga over the original Halo.

runners up: Half Life 2 (especially episode 2), Portal, Uncharted 2, the LucasArts adventure games (though granted I haven't played many... yet.)

EDIT: fuuuu, totally forgot about Sim City. Thanks Beezy!

1. Half-Life series - Definitive first-person experience.

2. Fallout series - Three great examples of Western RPGs with a setting that's different from the norm.

3. Planescape: Torment - Had it been able to get two great sequels, this would easily be number 1. As it is, P:T is one of my all-time favorite RPGs and one of the most compelling and detailed stories that the medium has to offer.

4. Mass Effect series - The ultimately scifi RPG series. Can't wait for 3!

5. Grand Theft Auto series - I was hugely disappointed with 4, but all the other entries have been really, really great action games. The level of freedom to roam the world and cause chaos at your leisure has helped to define the past decade of gaming.

6. Metroid Prime series - A mixture of exploration, mood, and first-person action that easily top ten material.

7. Mirror's Edge - One of the first FPS to totally nail platforming and it does so with a graphical style that is extraordinary

8. Left 4 Dead series - Fast-pace first-person cooperative zomibe killing. Accept no substitutes.

9. Elder Scolls series - The first two are totally dated and so big that the they defy comprehension [along with being filled with repetition], the later two are nevertheless fine examples of first-person RPGs that skewed towards the action side of the spectrum. Not the best ever, but definitely fun.

10. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - Were this game given another year of development time, or if the team were more familiar with 3D graphics and realtime combat, this would have easily snatched the top spot with little effort. As it stands, this is a great RPG experience hindered by terrible combat, loads of bugs, and a final third that crumbles to pieces. It will remain one of the greatest examples of what could have been.

Once again, don't pay too much attention to the order. If I thought about it long enough, I'd probably switch a few things around.

1.  Guitar Hero/Rock Band
2.  Everquest
3.  Team Fortress 2
4.  Baldur's Gate 2

There are some more things, but those four games/series have left the most lasting impression on me.

Wipeout - Defined the PS1 and is just all around great. Fantastic visual design (republic :bow2), music, track design, etc. Barring Fusion (which was middling) every iteration in the series has been amazing.

Pathologic - Russian developer Ice-Pick Lodge's debut game. A game in which you hope to understand and conquer an epidemic that envelops a poor rural Russian town. staying alive is a real challenge as you must eat and sleep (you can starve to death in your sleep) and you'll often find yourself trading razors and needles to delinquent kids for drugs or other edible stuff. The translation is really raw, but I just think that makes it feel so much more Russian.

The Void - Ice Pick Lodge's second game. A dating sim with a starvation mechanic. Nuff said. much better translation and while still gung-ho as eastern europe tends to be, you probably won't paint yourself into a corner as easily on this one. There is a fantastic Let's Play on Something Awul if you think the game sounds interesting but can't stomach Eastern European PC design.

Men of War - Company of Heroes for serious motherfuckers. Direct control over any unit that you want to, all units have ammunition and inventory and you have to refill your tanks with gasoline. Gung-ho eastern european game design at it's best.

Ghost Recon - The first Ghost Recon was amazing for it's time, going in to it today there might be some things that are horribly outdated, like the AI being fucking psychic with spotting you, but all in all it's a great slow paced tactical shooter. You can command your squads and take direct control of any one of them. There is also a lot of community made stuff for the game, it's especially heavy of fan-made sniper missions, which is great since the game is very well made for that stuff.

Counter Strike - Rite of passage in Scandinavia. Not on the level of Korea's Starcraft obsession, but you were bitch-made if you couldn't hold your own in CS during junior high-school. LAN parties, tournaments and all that jazz.

Thief - Probably the pinnacle of stealth games for me. The second Thief is my favorite, but the third game - not developed by the original team - is a valuable addition to the series.

Sub Culture - A Ubisoft game made for win95/98, never got it to run properly on xp, but I believe there are some glidewrappers and whatnot you can use. You play as a freelance submariner you goes out mining radio-active ore, taking on missions from the different underwater cities and such. You can pimp out your sub with all kinds of stuff; missiles, a magnet for dragging larger pieces of metal (that you sell for money), etc. Everything is supposed to be real small so you'll find quarters and stuff that are as big as your ship and you can go explore in caves and find metal cans of tomato soup and shit. The sequel made away with the original's art style (parodying various cultures; jamaican, russian/communist, etc) and just felt like a total step down. The lead designer now makes indie block-puzzle games. :'(

Another World - Great atmospheric side-scroller. The 15 anniversary edition with cleaned up graphics is a great version to get. It's kinda old-school in that there is a lot of insta-death trial and error, but you usually don't start too far back, and doing it all in sequence is part of the charm.

Video Olympics - a collection of Atari 2600 games. Mostly versions of Pong, but ohmygosh it's so awesome. Paddle controllers and a multitude of Pong games. I love me some Pong and this is most definitely the best version. there is a Plug 'n Play set of Video Olympics that is real fun. The paddles aren't really proper paddles, but it does the job and it saves me the trouble of scavenging the web for a 2600 and a cartridge.

GTA
Mass Effect
Burnout
Fallout
COD
NBA 2k
Gears of War
Diablo
The Sims (PC only)
Civilization

There are at least 10 other franchises that could swap in depending on the mood I'm in. And I favored the quality of a series as a whole rather than individual games hence why Deus Ex isn't listed.

Thinking back to the most influential (in terms of my love for games) western games I've loved

Ultima VIII: Pagan - My introduction to WRPG's, I never actually finished the game and I'm playing through Ultima VII on and off at the moment which in some ways is a better game but VIII has an incredible atmosphere and brilliant world. I'll never forget that opening scene with that guy getting his head chopped off with his wife crying and the monster coming outta the ocean and gobbling it up or the random justice enforcer that smites you out of nowhere when you do wrong. I'll also never forget the intensely frustrating platforming.

Myst
Revisited the remake and played through it with my gf over Christmas. Such a good game but not nearly as difficult as I remember it being, it certainly has it's share of taxing but brilliant puzzles though.

Star Wars: X Wing
First game I ever bought. Heard X Wing V Tie Fighter was better but I got this and it was awesome.

Mass Effect
Had to convince a few friends to try this again after they tried and dismissed it (Sceneman) but they knew what was up once they got past the opening stages. This game is boss. ME2 is technically better in many ways but I prefer the soundtrack and planet exploration of ME far more.

Half Life 2
My fav FPS.

Wipeout
I've only played the original and HD. The pinnacle of arcade racing imo.

Doom
On my 12th birthday I stayed up all night with my friends playing this hopped up on sugar :rock Never been so scared playing a game since.

Sim City 2000
:rock Arcologies

Civilisation II - Couldn't stop playing this for years. Haven't played any subsequent releases really want to dip back in with 5.

Portal - Pure genius.

Counterstrike -
Addictive as hell

Diablo 2 - :heartbeat :heartbeat :bow2

---------

Baldurs gate, Warcraft, Metroid Prime (made by a western dev but still some heavy input from Ninty japan so deserves to be on both lists), Tony Hawks 2, SSX Tricky, Forza 3, Tomb Raider, CS Mods (Natural Selection), GTA series (even 4), Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted 2 etc etc... :bow western games :bow2

I forgot about Myst.  It's awesome.

I found it fairly difficult because I only figured out how to get to that tower after I finished the game (didn't realise I had to shut the metal elevator door :duh).  I'd only played NES before then so this graphical adventure/mouse shit was pretty new to me.

Yeah I tried getting XvT to run in DosBox and did but the sound didn't work, everything else was fine though. Will try again sometime, but I'll try Tie Fighter instead.

Have you tried out Real Myst? It's the same but you can move freely rather than just between pre rendered static screens. The way it was meant to be played apparently but they had to use the static screens originally because of technical limitations.

I haven't, I often wondered how it would be because I imagine the game would go by a lot quicker.

Neither. Dark Forces rules though. Last year I set it up in the labs at uni and played it while I was procrastinating. Also set up the open source remake of the original quake and played through it in lan with dudes in the lab. Dark Forces is still real sweet, kinda forgot about it though, dunno if I'd make it a top ten. I got pretty far in it but never finished ( a few levels after you first meet the dark trooper where the facility is going to blow up and you have to escape).

I dunno if it makes it quicker just makes the game less frustrating imo. It feels a lot nicer just moving around the environments with no waiting between areas.

Metroid Prime-I think my favorite videogame series.  Perfect amount of exploration, puzzles and combat.  The amazing atmosphere though is what really got me.

Mirror's Edge-This was one of the few games that I insisted on buying new at full price just to support the developer.  It's just an amazing amount of creativity in it's art design and level design.  So sad that it kinda flopped.

Starcraft-Can't leave this off.  It introduced me to the RTS genre and is still perfectly playable today.  I never played competitively online or anything but I do have hundreds of hours in it and its expansion.

Fallout 3-I whored my free time to this game.  Not just to play it, but to read guides and walkthroughs and plan all the ways to approach every quest and situation.  It was just a monster game.

Mass Effect-It took KOTOR and made it awesomer.  Especially with ME2 where your inventory and combat never become annoying.  It's hard to find a more believable sci-fi universe in any video game (or even movie) yet it doesn't feel bloated full of exposition (since you decide those parts obviously).  The actual gameplay is a perfect formula of action and RPG.

Orange Box-I can't comment on TF2 which I played for like 10 minutes but Portal and HL2 with it's episodes are just great storytelling and puzzles.  Portal and HL2 are kind of opposites where Portal is brilliantly simple and HL2 tries to make it like you're running through an entire functional world.  I think they both accomplish their goals.

I'm old enough to be able to post such a list but the thing is most people wouldn't care outside of fellow oldies like me. Most of those series have died or get retro remakes.

Noticed there's a lot of crossover on our lists... Half Life, Fallout, Mass Effect, Wipeout and Mirror's Edge, seems like most of the Bore agrees on their greatness. Also I noticed a lot of picks were relatively new games (Mass Effect series, Red Dead Redemption), not too much in the way of oldskool/classic/obscure western games. I expected to see more Doom, Quake, graphic adventures, complex strategy and sim games, and a few more obscure titles thrown in.

Some ones off the top of my head (some of which I enjoyed as well):

-Rare's NES/SNES titles - Wizards and Warriors, RC Pro Am, Slalom, :bow BATTLETOADS :bow2
-The whole British/euro 80's gaming scene aka the Speccy, BBC Acorn, C64, Amiga etc.
-Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, other Midway arcade ports
-Shiny's sidescrollers, their best being Aladdin and Earthworm Jim
-Quite a number Sega-published Genesis games were doen by American/European developers, probably the best (and best known) were Kid Chameleon and the Ecco games
-EA's sports games :bow NHL '94 :bow2

And surprisingly, a lot of those horrible LJN licensed games weren't western, but contracted out to small Japanese developers... was pretty mindblowing when I learned that Westone (Wonder Boy) did Jaws, and Karate Kid was made by some "Atlus" company who you may or may not have heard of.

Granted most of the best western games were on PC back in the day, but they had some pretty well-known console hits. As long as you stayed away from the shitty licensed games. Back then the lines weren't as clear between the west and Japan, and both sides were definitely at a creative peak.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (infocom)
Dungeon Master
Raider of the Lost Ark (2600)
X-Com
Wizard of Wor
Grim Fandango
Colonial Conquest
Ultima Series
Balance of Power
Millennium 2.2

As with the modern list, I could swap out 10 other games depending on what mood I'm in.

Agreed on the Battletoads games.
I think Earthworm Jim sucks. Aladdin was great though.

Anyone ever played Wing Commander? I only played the snes game, but I loved it.

I wasn't really into PC gaming much during the 90's, mainly Genesis/N64/PS1 so none of the big PC exclusives left an impact on me and most of what I played on the consoles were Japanese games [Nintendo, Sega, and JRPGs].

Also I noticed a lot of picks were relatively new games (Mass Effect series, Red Dead Redemption), not too much in the way of oldskool/classic/obscure western games.

I think it's just hard to remember what you were playing 20 years ago.  And I am guessing there were a lot more awesome one-offs in the past, rather than constant franchises that are now milked to death, which makes it harder to remember also.

If you didn't list the Ultima series you don't play videogames or you're some kind of infantile weeaboo/Nintendo fan

Or maybe I just don't give a shit about PC games.  Not all of us were little calfs locked in our rooms with only the warm light of a PC to keep us company while growing up.

Ultima 2 because you play as the bad guy.

FAKE EDIT: Oh, wait, no, that's Wizardry 2.  All those shitty PC RPGs blend together.

Also not listing X-Com proves your main interest in videogames is for the upskirt japanese pro-raper type games.

I actually own X-Com on PSX. :lol

Quoting this for posterity.

X-Com PSX WAS a decent port, Genghis.  Even had mouse support.
